We got a dose of our own medicine as Poly also used a no-huddle offense, and dominated the TOP, which had the effect of accomplishing what Stitt tries to accomplish with his offense....... wear down the defense.
But it wasn't the defense that cost us the game. Our offense looked like it did in the first fall scrimmage.....totally confused. It was a horror show of dropped passes, mis-communication between Gus and his receivers, and very poorly thrown balls by Gus. To make matters worse, our running game was non-existent, except for the long Nuygen run. Our O-line just can not block for the running game.
Gus showed tonight that he is very inconsistent throwing the rock, and is inaccurate on many throws. And our receivers continue to drop easy catches, which really hurts this control-type passing game.
We are also turning the ball over way too often. Bobby Hauck would be blowing a head gasket if his team turned the ball over as much as we have done so far this season.
As I predicted, our special teams are costing us....... poor punts......poor KO coverage.....missed FGs.
And, the center snaps continue to be very shaky, as I stated before the season started. Gus saved at least 5-6 disasters on poor snaps. It will cost us in future games, as you will see. Write it down.
Not sure Gus is the answer. I would like to see what our back-up can do.
Yes, we came very close to being 2-0. But we also came very close to being 0-2!
Wow all of that mess you just mentioned and it still took an improbable 49 yard field goal in the final seconds for the Griz to lose to a team who beat us 42-21 last year.....that is exactly why I'm not worried one bit about this team this year. This team will be in the thick of it for big sky title.
You should be worried. Poly was un-ranked, lost lots of great players to graduation, and we played them at home, and lost. Great teams do not lose at home to an un-ranked opponent.
While I agree that it was a pretty poor performance by the offense, I wouldn't lose too much sleep about the fact that Cal Poly is "unranked". They are a pretty good team, and should be ranked. (However, their opening part of their schedule is just absolutely brutal...)
