Griz/ORU

I am so frustrated, glad I am not watching this game. No penetrating, no outside game, What is wrong? YES, we are pressing. Dloughy and Ellis press well. Seems like Dloughy always makes big plays when trapping/pressing. I think Rundles can too.

I know we're pressing but when i said runnin in that first post i meant running as on a run. tell me, when did this game turn around? right at that sub. it can't be a coincidence.

No question Ellis is one of the best on ball defenders which is why Tinks put him in. Need these free throws, Cam back in

Ever thought the other team had something to do with it? Are you watching or just listening?

I guess the other team saw the frosh pg come in and decided that was their cue to give up the 7-0 run. when he comes out they push the lead back to double digits. that's probably it.

Please flatter me. Let's try Ellis, Rundles, Dloughy, Jordan, and Vanderjagt with traps and press. Damnit Vanderjagt is 7 foot that can move well. Have him protect the hoop and utilize the other 4 athleticism 1-3-1 or 2-2-1, any traps. Jordan and Vanderjagt have good size and athleticism to protect the basket.

Way to go press. Is it youth keeping Vanderjagt on the bench? How is he at practices? The few I have seen, he has looked good.

Didn't particularly stand out to me in the ten or so practices I went to. It's youth and just not really being ready yet. Didn't Tinks ask him to redshirt?

Same problem with Swift last year. Pretty much wasted his FR year in not redshirting. Call it youth I guess. Vanderjagt was very heavily recruited by many big schools. He definately is not uncoordinated. There is a lot to like about him as for his skills. I hope he does not get frustrated with lack of pt. I want to see him here for 4 years.

Oh well, part of growing, and ORU is a very good program. Anyone think we should trap more and earlier with Ellis and Dloughy? I agree with Athomeinthedahlbergden regarding Rundles. We are a much better team when he is on the court. This is his team for the next 3 years, why not start that this year? Let Ellis and Martin rotate the remaining minutes and spell Rundles here and there but not as often.

he wasn't guaranteed anything. There is an adjustment to D1 ball. There are not that many true freshmen that are impact players immediately, at least at the Mid-major level. Stuckey is an exception. VJ needs to bulk up a little and get a lot stronger, then he will be a good player and have a great career.

awful start to a 5 game road trip.

ORU is a solid squad. We kept it to within 3 pts for the first 19 minutes. About what I expected this game to end up. It's a lose, but not an awful loss. This is probably the best team in the 5 game stretch. If we lose to Portland, now that will be "awful". If you knew the Griz would go 4-1 on the road-trip, this is the game you'd pick as the loss.

I understand Vanderjagt needs a lot of maturing physically. I do not expect him to get major minutes. However, feel he would be effective defender in the press, where his length would be an asset to the team. One does not have to be rough in the press. Just be back there to protect the basket. Camp out in the lane and invite someone in when you are 7 foot. Big John was very good protecting the basket, and nowhere is long or quick as Vanderjagt.

I think Tinks highly recommended it to him. On the other hand a lot of recruiters fill these kids heads full of how good they are. Maybe he felt like he could play at this level right away. I have seen this happen before, and have seen a kid play his freshman year and redshirt his sophomore year, then come back for 3. Some people call that a Mormon Mission, except their's last 2 years. It is a huge advantage to schools like BYU, as those kids get two more years to mature physically.

I'm hopin for that mormon mission. I think he still has a ways to go before he is a major contributor and the Griz front court should be just fine without him.

When you continually let other teams shoot in the mid to high 40% range from three point land you are not going to win to many games. With 9 minutes left in the game Oral Roberts was still above 50% from the three point area. This was a problem a month ago and has not been fixed. :twocents:
