GRIZ/NAU

AJ hit 5 threes today, man that is scary for the rest of the conference. If he can hit those like that he will be absolutely unguardable (more so than he is now, that is). Could be nau's lazy zone also.

Having just listened to Tinkle's postgame comments at NAU I'm still trying to figure why he is so reluctant to give AJ his props. Ditto for his newspaper quotes. Johnson has raised the Griz to a level Wayne hasn't enjoyed to this point. For all of his scoring the very best thing about him is that he elevates everybody elses game. His speed and court sense are like nothing we've seen out of UM guard play in a long time.

I wish we could have seen AJ team with Matthews and Criswell.

AJ doesn't need the props. He is very humble, almost to a fault. He always gives all the credit to his team mates. And if an interviewer points out a fantastic play he says he was lucky.

My heart skipped a few beats when he went to the floor hard in the last few minutes of the game.

Agreed, good to see him get back up after that, it was a great drive to the hoop.

Thanks for saying it for me. AJ mad Tinlkle 300k this year. Tinkle was undoubtedly under the gun with very mediocre seasons since he's shown up. AJ is a baller that would have a jo b in the big 10/12/west etc... kudos to tinkle for bringing AJ to MIssoula, but give the dude his props.

Robo, I posted it earlier. Of the Tinkle critics, you are the one that at least his man enough to give credit when and where due. I hope in time, coach critics will learn a few things for the better from you. This GRIZ fan appreciates that in any coach critic.

WSU got the sweep over PSU beating the Vikings 78 - 68.

That means Griz have to win out and hope WSU loses two other games. Doesn't look to good for that. WSU's toughest game is against Montana and the rest against teams that are likely not going to make the tournament or barely going to make it (MSU, Sac, NAU).

But, since PSU lost again, Griz are 2 games behind WSU, and two games ahead of PSU.

Looks like Ogden is going to be where the tournament is going to be held. Rather it be Ogden then Portland.

They made me a liar. 7 for 9 the 2nd half on the 3's after going 5 for 15 the 1st half. Who would of guessed that stat. Good for the griz. Keep the mojo going. AJ is amazing.

I love it when that happens...

Attended the game last nigh in Flagstaff. There were nearly as many Griz fans as Jack fans. I am sure that the total house count was under 700-800 fans.

A couple of observations. AJ is a great talent. He is a two-guard, playing the pint, but he make the most of his limited ball-handling ability. If we had a great point guard who could penetrate and dish, allowing AJ to move to the two spot, he would score even more.

I am totally unimpressed with Elgin-Taylor. He plays in slow motion out tere. All he does is dribble around the perimeter, with zero penetration. He is not quick, and has no offensive game.

Hasquet made several big-time drives to the hole. I love his combination inside/outside game. He and AJ should take 70% of the shots, like they did last night.

The Griz defense played better than I have seen them play in recent years. They worked hard, helped out, and boxed out well to dominate the boards. This game was won primarily on the defensive end, which allowed the Griz to get their transition game going and to get plenty of open 3-point looks.

Now, about coach Tinkle. Wayne needs to sit his butt on the bench during the game ans stop trying to coach his players on every play. Coaching should be done in practice. There were several times that Griz players were obviously distracted during the game by trying to look at Tinkle screaming at them while the play was happening. You never see a great coach attempt to orchestrate every possesion but standing and screaming at the players like Wayne does.

MTJEff....Interesting last part of your post. I've been under the thought all season (and the whole time tinkle has been the HC), the he needs to be MORE vocal, and it almost appears that he is very uncomfortable (and almost comes across a little awkward), when he does stand up, and yell. (maybe because he's so damn tall, it just looks awkward) lol. I'm not certain the guy has received a single technical foul(prob has one, I'm just sayin), and at times I think he should get after the refs, and until AJ this year, his players for not playing very hard. I mean, if you saw Krysko at all, Tinks is talking/coaching/yelling, whatever you want to call it, not even a quarter as much, and way less then a quarter as intense as Krysko was... IMHO.

Speaking of the Griz defense.....they are playing great defense and staying in games when the O is lacking because of the defense! Earlier this year, there was a lot of criticism on this board regarding the lack of defense and effort by this team. I don't know how the rest of the season will turn out, but the D and effort displayed by the Griz since being 3-3 is about as good as I have ever seen from any Griz team. The coaches and team deserve a lot of credit! :)

I agree the defense is the best I have ever seen from the GRIZ. That zone is just stifling and really is frustrating to play against. It surely seems that there are many similarities to the zone the Lady GRIZ are having so much success with. Great job by BOTH of our GRIZ teams!

I am sure most on this board saw the game live, but if you did miss it you can watch a highlight package that the Big Sky has put together at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/The-Big-Sky-Conference/44764868904 it is a Facebook page. You do not have to have a Facebook profile to view either.

The Big Sky has collected an extensive video library here as well, giving Big Sky fans an opportunity to view games they may have missed.*

* These packages consist of NAU broadcasts and Altitude Games of the Week ;)
