Griz/NAU game thread

I must say, the turning point in the Griz game tonight was actually a bit of luck. Ward chucking up and hitting that 37 foot, off balance 3 with 1 second on the shot clock and a tie game was probably the difference.

A road win is a road win!! We have got to get alot better! Gregory played great tonight, Player of Game! Keron is hurt pretty bad it appears??? And that sucks!! Time to get ready for another jr high attendance game in Sac!

Yep. 1-0. All that matters.

Yeah, the crowd at Sac will be a joke. But at least it's a tiny gym. The crowd was a complete joke in Flagstaff tonight too in a big facility (and BTW, the upgrades in the Walkup look really nice).

msu might be the worst shooting team. Ever.

It's like Brad went to a track meet and found 11 really athletic guys and said, "Hey, do you wanna play basketball for msu?"

And they all say, "Sure!!! Ummmm...what's a basketball?"

That Hornet "gym" is a real palace, ain't it

Damn. Could you imagine if they (sac st) won the Big Sky and and hosted the tourney? The "hornets nest" would represent the Big Sky on ESPN....................Holy sh%t what an embarrassment that would be. And I thought NCU's gym was bad on ESPN....

Yeah, Wise was a little inconspicuous tonight. His greatest moment might have been the feed to Ward for the slammajamma, which was a very pretty pass.

I am happy now. I watched the game on VOD at bigskytv.org. Great quality for online viewing, very impressed with BSTV. Also impressed with NAU's remodel, it looked great, too bad there were empty seats everywhere. I like NAU's new coach a lot, love his demeanor and attitude. NAU, is very improved team. On to the game.

I am glad the game was not as bad as some of you were posting during the game. Could have we done better? Hell yes, we should have scored a lot more, the inconsistent scoring was not from pathetic execution. It was a few careless turnovers, and shots simply not falling. Keep in mind, NAU missed some good shots too. I think the point differential was about right from what I seen.

Cherry's presence was very noticeable, statistically he did not dominate. His defense forced a lot of NAU turnovers just from being near the ball, and causing them to force some things Gregory was damn impressive on both ends of the courts and rebounded well. I am more sold on Gregory every game. He is taking the ball to the hole more often, and getting more confident every game. This is the kind of development a coaches loves in a young player. He will be an All Conference type player next year. I could not believe the called jump ball toward the end of the game, he was fouled hard on that one. I hope Deshields is not badly injured, he gets the the hoop so easily and creates well. His defense is very good too. Our guard play will only get better as Gregory and Deshields get experience, and Cherry gets in game shape. His stamina and legs still need to improve.

Team wise, the GRIZ were more consistent in rebounding. The exception being the 1st half put back dunk, and the possession in the closing minute of the game. Rebounding was much more of team effort tonight. Jamar, Ward, and Gregory all had solid games on the boards.

Offensively, with exception of Deshields having to force a shot at the end of shot clock, Ward's long 3 pointer with the clock expiring, and 2 other shots (cannot remember who) the shots we took were good looks. Those shots will fall more often most games. We had a few open 3's that did not fall, but were wide open. We missed a few too many bunnies, Hutchison, Deshields, Cherry, Jamar (2 of them he got put backs anyway). Speaking of Hutchison, I really am feeling him. Against NAU, he caught the ball, and was ready. He made a few good moves. His shots were good shots. He just did not hit them. Despite the stats, I seen some hope for him. He looked more comfortable out there. I honestly wish we would see more of Martin. I have yet to see enough touches for him to know what he can do offensively. I would like to see more designed plays to free Weisner up more often. He was shooting 60% from 3 coming into this game.

I do wonder why we are not posting up Jamar more often. I don't see a SG or SF in the league that can handle him. He has good post moves, is strong, and can draw fouls. With Will Cherry returning, and the maturation of Gregory/Deshields, we can be less dependent on Jamar for distribution and perimeter scoring. I would be using him posting up all night on 2's and 3's defending him. He is a great passer too.

I am beginning to wonder what is with Coleman? He can help the GRIZ in the post, scoring, and rebounding, but just has not found his game. I sure hope he finds it, even without a legit post man, his play can take the GRIZ up a few more levels.

Defense had a few breakdowns, and gave up a few rebounds. One thing I did notice though. The guys defending the post kept their ground much better, and fewer dumb calls against them. Ward and Hutchison got their arms up to effect shots and did not get baited into shooting fouls as easily.

Overall, I am not as worried about the GRIZ as this game thread indicates. Overall shot selection was good, and those shots fall more often than not in most games. Cherry, Deshields (if not out long), Gregory, Jamar, and Henderson give us the deepest guard rotation in the league. If Deshields is out, Jamar sees less SF time, Henderson and Weisner get more SF time. Rebounding is improving. Cherry will be back to himself in a few weeks. We can all relax, this team will be just fine in conference play, and have plenty of time to be post season ready. Seriously, I seen a lot of good things from this NAU game. Road games are never easy for anyone. GO GRIZ!!!!!

Sacramento State and Portland State are not allowed to host the tournament in thier gyms, they have to find an alternate arena

When PSU hosted years back they did it in the Rose Garden. It was pretty sweet (albeit so empty it felt like a pick-up game) to see the Griz win it all that year.

The game was broadcast live on DISH on Altitude sports. I was surprised to find it but is seems like they are showing more and more Big Sky games.

Class C Schools in MT have better gyms than Sac St and Port St. Sac St = Chester High, but Chester High puts 1000 in the seats most games. Port St. = Saco High, Saco actually has a bigger and better gym. Pretty sad? Just two examples, Saco probly has the best Class C gym, but there are many Chester and Rez gyms that put more people in the seats than Sac St, Port St, and NAU?? None of these towns have more than 1200 people! Kinda Crazy to think about?? :?:

Like Sacramento State University is going to try and stuff an annual enrollment of around 29,000 students in the student seating section of a basketball facility that holds 1,200 total in a so-called Nest?

WHERE'S THE PARTY, D-U-D-E?
