Griz hoops strengths/weaknesses next year

Landing another PG would allow the Griz to have major flexibilty at the guard position, with Martin and Matthews both more than capable of filling in @ PG. Someone with Virgil's passing ability could create some interesting matchup problems for the type of players that would be guarding him as a 3.

I think it sets up the potential for running a 3 guard lineup which could prove to be advantageous against box and ones, or sagging zones, etc.

Don't we allready play with a three guard lineup? I don't think Dhouly can be considered anything other than a guard given his skill set.

Until Krysco and company finish their recruiting I do not know how you can answer the
question that is the topic title. So far the coaches have only signed highschool players,
granted very talented which are long term development. The focus now appears to be JC
recruits which the quality of which will directly effect the success of next years team.

I will say this. One of the strength of last years team was its depth. You could bring
player after player off the bench. At the Cat/Griz game last year I even thought McCay
made some valuable contributions. Right now with the defection of Easley, Farr,
Lynch, and McKay I really think your depth has taken a serious hit. You can argue
about this player or that player was dead weight etc. but when you look at all 4 players it
is a serious amount of minutes that are gone. This especially true at the inside positions,
you look at best really thin. The JC's that Kysco signs could effect the position that the
Griz finish in Conference, by 4 spots easily.

Now some body answer me one thing. From what I read hear and read on the net you are
still recruiting these positions Big men JC, small forward JC and a Point Guard JC.
With Easley, and Farr gone and McKay and Lynch gone (but unannounced) you should
have two scholarships left. Are the Griz looking to sign the two best of the three
categories or one of each?

That's a good question mslacat-If Van Vliet does not redshirt and if Hasquet plays post (which I think he will do quite well), maybe Krysko feels OK at the 4 and 5. The GRIZ almost pulled Hasquet off of redshirt last season when Davis was gone and this had a lot to do with how well he was playing in practice. They may also get Chavez back. Lemar Phillips, while only 6'3" is a tremedous rebounder and defender and sounds like Krysko's kind of player. If he is signed, he could contribute to the inside game as well. All of this is only my speculation though.

What is everyone hearing about Phillips??? Is he seriously considering MT?? What other schools is he considering?? What kind of athlete/player is he???? Has he made a visit here????

Also, is anybody hearing anything on the PG front?? Maurice Barksdale or anyone else????

I heard Today that that Montana May lead for his service but others are stil involved.

If I remember my prior research on this guy, he was the leading rebounder (8.7) on a team that features a 6'9" guy that is heading to St. John's. He made his Region's all-tournament team and I think was 2nd team all region during the regular season. I believe he played for Highland CC in Illinois.

Seyfert showed some promise aat the end of the year-hopefully he can
continue to improve. He often is mismatached on defense against a quicker player which gets him into foul trouble. Strait needs more minutes
and touches. He can score both inside and outside-FT's will come. Virgil and Matt are capable of tremendous games;Kevin is the hardest worker but he also needs to know when to pass vs shoot. I believe that Griz can return to Big Dance if they don't get big headed or selfish.

In a three-guard system how many guards do we need?
Most of the players are capable playing in several positions.

Matthews (SR)
Criswell (SR)
Dlouhy (JR)
JuCo Transfer 1
Martin (SO)

Are 5 guards enough?
Take a R-shirt off of Staudecher or Swift as needed.
-------------------------------------------------------

4 & 5 POSITION
Seyfert (SR)
JuCo Transfer 2 or Chavez
Strait (SO)
Hasquet (FR)
Van Vliet (FR)

If JuCo Transfer 2 or Chavez can contribute, we would have 5 players for the 4 & 5 POSITION. Sharp might be ready to mix it up if needed.

If the final 2 positions can contribute, it could be a really great season.

1.martin
2. criswell
3. dlouhy
4. hasquet
5. seyfert
they need to get a center that can produce on both sides of the court but if they dont they need seyfert to step up this year.

I think Strait would start before Seyfert, Strait is just plain better. If Hasquet can beat out Stait for a starting spot you will have something special indeed.

Strait had an outstanding true freshman year. With a season under his belt and a year of maturity mentally and physically, I would be looking for him to have a spectacular year next season. The same thing could be said also about Martin although he is much more of a head case.

Brian Lynch is transferring to Seattle Pacific. There are short articles in today's Missoulian and Great Falls Tribune (article available online). As things stand now, the GRIZ are even with the board as far as scholarships are concerned. I still wonder if Chris McKay will return.

There is no reason to think that the Griz cannot repeat as Big Sky champ
s. they will be stronger in the middle than most teams. From there it is a question of having enough ball to go around. The bench can be stronger
by the end of the season. I am very optimistic.
