Griz have a new coach

I really hope it happens and is a done deal but when the article says the job has been offered and they are "waiting for a response," that means it's not quite final yet...at least In my book.

ESPN is reporting it.

This would be a great hire in my mind. If it is so, the next item of business is to keep Jono and go get some other good assistants.

Great news! In my mind, Decuire was the only choice. Not often does UM get HC applicants with his kind of credibility. Stoked to see where he takes this program. He should be a terror on the recruiting trail.

:thumb: I think he'll take this program to the next level and hopefully make some noise in the tourney more consistently! The Big Sky better look out!

Welcome back home, Travis!!! Kudos to Haslam for this hire. Sounds to me Engstrom stayed out of the way, which is a good sign for the Athletic Department/Director. I am so stoked about this hire. DeCuire fit the bill perfectly and it made 100% sense to me, and many. I expect this to be a 5 to 7 year hire. Could be less if the GRIZ can do better in the NCAA tournament.

I am sure Decuire will not be losing any recruits or players. I do hope Metzger Jones stays on staff though. I don't know Paulson very well, but hear great things of him. I do hope DeCuire brings in a tough as nails post coach that can instill a bad ass tough mentality to the paint.

As for this coming season, assuming we lose no players from this hire, I still expect a rollercoaster ride before conference play starts.

Kudos to me too, My top choices for each of the last 3 basketball coaches got the job. Larry, Wayne, and now Travis. Here is to Travis making a positive impact for the next 5 to 7 years!!!!

U know how to pick. Who's gonna b the next football coach?

I hope yr right on the 5 to 7 year stay. I'm guessing 3, mabey even 2. 2 conference titles in two years and mabey we surprise someone and win a "second round" game? He's already a known commodity in the PAC 12. We're becoming known as a producer of quality coaches. I wish him success in his time here and I'll wish him success when he moves on. I'm not trying to be a negative nate. It's just a fact of life for Griz b-ball and f-ball fans.

I am absolutely thrilled with the selection of Travis as head coach. But, given the loss of Jamar and Deshields and the fact that the Griz were one and done in the tournament last season, I am not counting on a BSC title next year. The cupboard is not exactly overflowing.

Not quite the fan of this hire for obvious reasons. If successful in a short time, and having already been in the running for two PAC-12 jobs - I dont see him in this for the long run. Success quickly means 2-3 years, and as good everyone thinks he can be - then this is probable.

I'd rather have a coach who might only be here 2-3 years if it meant our program continued to improve and was ready for the next best coach over having an unknown coach stall the program and be here for years. But this hire might burn out too. I still like the chances that he'll probably do good things for the program.

It's a two-sided coin, no doubt. It's frustrating to lose a beloved coach, in the prime of his success, because he is successful. On the other hand, what a great place for a young guy to develop a solid team, a record, and a reputation. I'm a big fan of long-lived coaches, John Wooden (I've got five of his books here on the shelf) and Joe Paterno , but a dynamic program creates and produces players ... and coaches, too.

Welcome back Travis! --

Like almost everyone who's commented, I believe this to be the best possible hire for Mr. Haslam to score... Of course, I believe I would have felt similarly had Freddie Owens or Jono Metzger Jones been offered the top position.

I guess I believe that -- if Mr. DeCuire departs in 2-3 years -- it means the program will have been incredibly successful. Which means it's all the more important to secure a solid assistant: a guy who could step in/up quickly and continue the program without missing a beat. My nomination would be Jono, who would make the transition very smoothly. Indeed, we know he's qualified right now. Hope he's offered a position; hope he stays!

Next: while I realize how important it is to also get a top quality big man's coach, I also believe it's very important to hire a brilliant, very young assistant -- capable of learning quickly -- who can be considered an apprentice for the job down the road. The best programs do this! C'mon Griz... get a recent Griz grad back here this year. Get a solid guy who can relate to the players (only a few years older, knows the frustrations players experience, can offer one-on-one advice, etc. etc.) Also... who can step on the floor and play competitively as a means of demonstrating technique.

Nominations, anyone? My top choice would be Ryan Staudacher, who's already making waves as a high school head coach in Washington State. Of course, there are other very solid candidates.

Now it'll be interesting to see how the team shakes out. It'll be important to get this program stabilized quickly. Summer camps are starting in 3 weeks.

Additional benefit of DeCuire being hired, he has great connections on the Atlantic Coast as well as the Pacific Coast and Northwest. We need an assistant with solid Midwest connections.

As for our next football coach, I really do not follow college football coaching as much as I do college basketball. I may venture a guess whenever it is announced Mick will step down. I am much more comfortable analyzing and talking college basketball, especially GRIZ college basketball.

GJ, I will add a few recent players who I want to see coach. I know Derek Selvig wants to pursue coaching. I just am not sure how soon he wants to give up his professional overseas career. Matt Martin has tons of coaching potential. He is setting himself up well in the insurance industry now though. I don't know if he has any desire to coach at any level. If he is reading or anyone reading that knows him, "Matt, I hope you take up coaching sooner than later."

Virgil Mathews and Anthony Johnson are also guys that would strike me as great coaches, if they decided to pursue it.
