Griz Fans Accept Mediocrity Now

I am an old griz fan and I can remember when very few people in Missoula let alone the state could give two shits about griz football.

Ah, those heady days of yore when 1,500 drunk fans spread across the bleachers at Dornblazer to watch the Griz get rolled again....and again....and again.... :lol: :lol:

it just seemed that way - Griz record at the "New" Dornblazer was 46-38-1. The problem was they didn't play enough home games (25 in the first 7 years) until after the work study scandal and the resulting 4th de-emphasis on athletics which also turned the Missoulian and student body against the football program).

Even at that, there were some really GOOD teams in the Big Sky then, unlike the better part of the "run" after they left. Its getting back NOW to a conference that has more than 3 good teams and nothing is a given. Far from mediocrity. perhaps for the first time since those days competitive.......

Football, all competitive sports are similar to an arms race. Programs simply catch up, get better, find better athletes, work harder and smarter, and get a bit of luck to succeed.

UM has and will continue to field competitive teams. But our competition does not roll over, even BSC is a lot stronger in many sports.

I recall the less than spectacular football days before Read came. Stitt may have the same impact but I suspect it will be a long grind before we reach the top.

Will we have the patience in a hurry up, get it done today culture of win now and often world?

I have my doubts.

The funny part of it is Larry Donovan was like a breath of fresh air after Gene Carlson...... Despite his attempt to return to the wishbone, he is in large part responsible for where Griz football became. Washington-Griz was in large part his vision and he sold it well.....................

Relax, Atlanta. I am not sure that I agree with you that we accept mediocrity, but I do agree with you on some points. I think the difference is the fan base is changing, and is not as passionate as the fan base was, as you can see by how many people are sitting during the games. Wa-Griz is not as loud as it was when I first attended games in 08. There are too many non-passionate fans, people that just go to the games to say they were there, too many people taking friends to their first Griz game, people that aren't even Griz fans. Because the Griz don't win every game, and don't win the conference anymore, you have alot more dismissive fans, because the only reason they became Griz fans is because the Griz won and the Cats lost, alot. Alot of older fans still have tickets in the North End Zone, and don't want people to be standing, as I experienced when I was in the front row vs Portland State a couple season back and was told to sit down from the very start of the game, which I didn't do. These are just a few of the things that I have noticed and I only make like 1 game a year.

As for the move up threads, there is no need for that, as the full college football landscape is changing. The 5 power conferences are pretty much going to end up doing their own thing, and then the rest of the teams that are the bigger FCS teams will end up in some kind of league that is mixed with the non-power 5 conference teams, so moving up is really not a good option.

I hope that Stitt can bring some of the attitude back to this team, where nobody f#cks with us. Ever since Pflu took over we kind of lost some of that, and then with Mick it all but disappeared. I like the Griz teams that are confident, and a little cocky, that will get in their opponent's faces and let them know that we are THE Montana Grizzlies, and we are here to kick your ass!!

So Atlanta I am hoping for a season that restores the Griz as a top 5 FBS team yearly, and that all starts with NDSU in under 2 weeks, a victory over the Bison would help to begin the restoration process!! Go Griz!!!!

Exactly. We have a better O-line with them ALL back and Schmaing back, with a better offensive system and we're playing at home. At the very least our offense should perform better. Not sure if it's possible for our D to perform better than they did last year against UNDSU

Is 430 yards of offense per game... weak?
Is 30 Points per game... weak?
Is 12 sacks given up in 8 games... weak?

I will admit it would have been nice to be in the Top 3 in all those stats, but to call the UM line weak is just plain wrong.

Your OPINION is this O-line is among the weakest in the Big Sky. You have absolutely nothing "factual" to base that on at this point in the season.
