Here is my summary from what I remember. I should have posted this earlier, but was too tired to do so after the game.
Once again, Defense was great, but not as consistent as the Idaho game. Then again, CSF utilized their quickness better and their ball movement was very good in the 1st half, which is more of a credit to them than a knock on our defense. Qvale and Selvig have great impact in the paint defensively. Cherry, once again was everywhere ( I will further that comment later). Selvig, Jamar, and Steward also have a tendency to get their hands on many passes with slight tips or outright steals. I am used to teams having a few players having what they have, but this year we have very good players with great defensive awareness to add to good athleticism. Overall, we have a very smart and aware defensive team.
Rebounding, tenacity, shot selection, and ball movement was lacking in the 1st half. Our defense kept the GRIZ in the game. Tinkle made all the right half time adjustments on both ends of the court. I was expecting a 40 point 2nd half, they exceeded that due to CSF having to foul us late, and us hitting FT's. I was frustrated with Selvig and Cherry in the 1st half. I felt they were settling for jumpers and forcing things quite a bit in the 1st half. The 2nd half, they each played like the players they can be. They were incredible in every aspect of the game.
Selvig -Showed what he can do when he is aggressive on the offensive end. Anyone that knows basketball knows what kind of potential and smarts he has. Adding aggressiveness to his game can make him a true difference maker, and a rare big that makes teammates better. I refer that as the Larry Bird factor. We need the 2nd half Selvig every game every minute he is on the court. I will not be surprised to see Selvig flirt with triple doubles more often than any GRIZ. Keep it up Derek!
Cherry- AS mentioned earlier, I was disappointed in his 1st half offense. He was forcing things and took some rather questionable shots. He has the quicks and athleticism to never be settling for forced perimeter shots. The 2nd half he did what he does best in taking the ball to the hole. He drew fouls, and his FT shooting is good enough to make teams not want to foul him. I think he can average 15 points per game, and is capable of taking over a game. Defensively, he has impressed me from day one as a GRIZ. He now has awareness to go with his out of the world defensive skills. I see no reason why he cannot average 3 steals per game. I will even go further. His defensive game will allow him to be among the top 10 nationally in steals per game, maybe lead the nation in steals per game (yes he is that good). He needs his own category in forced turnovers, the last 2 games he has been responsible for close to 10 forced turnovers each game. Scary part is, he is so young and has much room to grow. At this pace, we may be witnessing the next GRIZ guard to be drafted by the NBA. Keep growing Will!
Qvale- Even when he struggles offensively, he impacts the game defensively. He is great at protecting the paint and impacting the game defensively. I absolutely loved the wide open 16 foot perimeter shot he hit. I had never seen him shoot that in a game until this game. That shot looked damn good with nice touch. That was encouraging for this fan, and brought a smile to me. I hope he can shoot that more often when given the opportunity, but not look for that to be his bread and butter.
Jamar- I like his versatility offensively and defensively. He is solid defensively. He is a great rebounder already. With some improved ballhandling, he can be a very good SG too. I also noticed very little rotation on his shot. The only thing I could notice was he just shoots the ball in whatever position he receives it in. Meaning, he has not developed the feel for naturally releasing the fall with his finger tips on the lines of the ball. That rotation would and should be there if he were to develop the habit of feeling for the lines. Despite that, the results are good so far. He has some nice range to boot. I would love to see him post up some smaller perimeter defenders. It looks to me he is capable of doing well there too. It will be fun to watch him develop his game for 4 years.
Jordan Wood- I really do not know what to think of his game yet. He has the skills to be very productive. I wonder why he is not more aggressive in looking for his offense. He is a good ballhandler, passer, and shot looks fundamentally good. Then again, maybe Tinkle wants him out there for solid defense and ball security. His defense was not as good as it was against Idaho. He struggled keeping with quicker guards on the ball. I hope we can see him find his offensive game though. He looks like a nice well rounded guard.
Steward- I am so glad we got this guy. He is a good player with a no quit attitude. He is Vassy Banny with better game and versatility. I wish I knew what he could do from the perimeter, being we need more perimeter shooting. I love him on the court with Cherry and Jamar for perimeter defense and rebounding. Anyone seen this guy shoot? How is his perimeter shot? Perfect guy coming off the bench, in my opinion.
Chase Adams- did not see much of him, but with our perimeter struggles early, why isn't he getting more time to prove himself? I hope, if we continue to struggle from the perimeter, Tinkle makes time for this kid. He intrigues me.
Stockton- Can we see more of his game come out or will we always expect him out there for attitude, ball security, and solid defense? At least it is nice to know what to expect from him game to game.
Mathias Ward- He had nice stints, but time was very limited. He has a great nose for the ball, good rebounder, and solid scorer. I need to see more defense from him consistently.
Autry,Reader and Hutchison- Did not see enough time to evaluate either. Come on GRIZ, lets get solid leads to build these guys. I want to see what they are capable of.
Right now, I only have a few minor concerns.
(1) Point Guard depth is unproven. Cherry is logging A LOT of minutes early. I pray we find him some relief, otherwise he may hit a wall come conference play. Wood, Adams, Stockton, Autry all appear to be solid enough ball handlers and defenders to allow some rest for Cherry. Then again, Cherry impacts the game so much, it is hard to sit him.
(2) Perimeter Shooting- Who can be the outside assassin consistently? I honestly have not seen enough to know who can get it done consistently from the outside. Jamar, Adams, Wood, Stockton, Selvig (he can do it, but he is too valuable making other things happen)? Our perimeter answer will be redshirting this year, I love Weisner's (sp?) shot. Then again, I see no reason to burn his redshirt this year.
(3) Big depth beyond Selvig and Qvale- I am comfortable with Ward against smaller posts, but am concerned what bigger teams can do to our other bigs? What can our other bigs do in absence of Qvale and or Selvig? Defensively, I like the little of what I seen of Reader.
(4) Youth and experience are very prevalent on this roster. The only way to better this is teaching and getting game experience. Fortunately those are givens every game, so that will get better every game. Also our defense is excellent, which helps overcome any weakness and struggles.
Wow, it is nice to critique the GRIZ and not be concerned over strategy, attitude, team unity, or defense. Those things alone, show how far our program and coaches have progressed in Tinkle's time here. Keep it up coaches. We are fortunate to have the staff we have!
