Proud Griz Man said:Anyone know the background: Did Jud dislike Missoula Montana?
I am quoting from his book "Jud: A magical journey" page 48
" ... Our guards were Tom Peck from Libby, Montana, and Robin Selvig from Outlook, Montana. But Montana was kind of a different place. I remember going to a restaurant and meeting a booster who said, "Ah, you're the new basketball coach! How many N___ 's are you going to start this year?" I said, "well now that you mention it, we're going to start five!" We only had three blacks on the team. I was really naïve on the black-white thing. ... I couldn't believe it. "
I can't speak for anybody else, but I always thought that Montanans were tolerant and respectful and that Missoula was fairly colorblind. From past stories, I understood that Naseby Rhinehart received substantially more prejudicial treatment at Moscow/Pullman (where Jud came from) than Missoula.
Just curious if anyone knows the background story. From what I heard second hand; Jud was and is a good guy and liked Missoula. I was stunned when I read that book.

Allan Nielsen (1975)
Westby High School
At the 1975 Class C State Tournament, Westby won the state championship. Nielsen garnered Class C All-State and Class C State Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. His basketball jersey was retired by Westby High School in 1980. Nielsen would start on the Grizzlies’ Big Sky Conference championship team in 1978. He was an All-Big Sky selection his junior and senior years. He was inducted into the UM Hall of Fame and had his jersey retired in 1980. The “Coaches Award,” given to the player who best represents Grizzly basketball, was renamed “The Allan Nielsen Award” in 1980. Allan Nielsen died in a tragic road construction accident just after his college career .
