...tell us more..touchdownmontana...
...herb jones who what when why...
...inquiring griz fan has to know...

... 8-) ...

I can't speak for others (touchdownMT), I thought Herb was an athletic player with great potential for improvement when he got more playing time. Not Mt Rushmore or UM Hall of fame caliber, but explosive talent.

I can't recall all the details, but I think Herb was from Spanaway WA. Herb was sixth man on a team built around Krystkowiak's low-post game, in a conservative Mike Montgomery offense. Herb was about 6'5" with extremely long arms, and very good vertical leaping ability. Herb would break down the baseline from the corner, and catch the alley-oop pass (from Glass) and dunk it. One specific time, the alley oop pass was late and arching high, Herb hung in the air and adjusted/rotated mid-air towards mid-court, and caught the ball and dunked it back over his head. I looked for pictures of Herb but could not locate any.

1984-85
Herb Jones* ....................................Spanaway, WA
(Letter given posthumously)

Jones was not only a phenomenal leaper, he had a great outside shot. Long, high-arching swishes from the corners were his specialties.

Here's one: the Good, the Bad, and definitely big-eared Ugly... Lee Johnson!

MRR
McKenzie
Jud
Cherry (who would have been a great CB/S in football)

Anyone know the background: Did Jud dislike Missoula Montana?

I am quoting from his book "Jud: A magical journey" page 48
" ... Our guards were Tom Peck from Libby, Montana, and Robin Selvig from Outlook, Montana. But Montana was kind of a different place. I remember going to a restaurant and meeting a booster who said, "Ah, you're the new basketball coach! How many N___ 's are you going to start this year?" I said, "well now that you mention it, we're going to start five!" We only had three blacks on the team. I was really naïve on the black-white thing. ... I couldn't believe it. "

I can't speak for anybody else, but I always thought that Montanans were tolerant and respectful and that Missoula was fairly colorblind. From past stories, I understood that Naseby Rhinehart received substantially more prejudicial treatment at Moscow/Pullman (where Jud came from) than Missoula.

Just curious if anyone knows the background story. From what I heard second hand; Jud was and is a good guy and liked Missoula. I was stunned when I read that book.

Great shooter. Nice long-range bomber from the corner. Before the three-point shot.
