GRIZ at NAU

Look, Griz were picked 3rd in the league, and they are about 3rd in the league, maybe 4th if Lilard is healthy. No Shame in that, just misplaced expectations. This is always the hardest road trip in conference, a sweep is to be expected. The hard news is this - Griz will probably drop a game in the EWU/PSU trip as well. UNC will be a tough game at home if Cherry isn't playing. Realistically Griz should finish 11-5, maybe 12-4, not bad and right where they should have finished. Don't lose faith or get off the bandwagon, keep your eye on the goal. The good news is there is still time for the Griz to learns and get better, and teams should peak in March, not February. Better to swallow this pill now, instead of at Dahlberg in the tournament. Good teams win in February, great coaching happens in March, I'm looking forward to March, even if it is in a dismal setting North of Denver.

Granted the Grizzlies did not play well tonight. Probably still reeling from the thumping at Weber. However a championship team needs to not get blown out on the road. As already noted it is tough to win on the road in the BS.
Time to regroup and refocus. After all these are 18 to 21 year old youngsters. If you look down the line all teams, pros and college go through slumps. Even the best and some times the top teams have their lumps. I think Tinks will turn this disastrous road trip into a positive and we will finish strong down the stretch. The point is to get Cherry healthy. We have been too dependent on his leadership and play and other teams have exploited two of our weaknesses, three pt. shooting and one dimensional guard play. It's unfortunate that Woods and Adams have not been able to adjust to this level. And Stockton for the most part plays within his skills. I give him credit for bringing his intensity to the court. The coaching staff needs to find a way to get Jamar, Art and Autrey more involved in the offense. And not from the three point line but in that 15' to 17' range when BQ gets double and triple teamed down low.
To be honest I enjoyed the way the game was called tonight by the officials. Now if they would just be consistent throughout the year and let these guys bang in there the BSC might have a chance in the NCAA tournament.
Next weeks game between NAU and Weber is going to be brutal. It will be a fun game to watch. Now on to our business, win our own court and we will be OK. I think whoever hosts the tournament will be the odds on favorite.

Ironic from the 15 minute mark to the 10 point mark of each half did the GRIZ in.

I wish Tinkle had the same patience in Autry as he does with the other guards. Autry, has much more game than every guard, not named Cherry.

NAU announce team loves Derek Selvig. How many times this year have I heard the other teams announcer complement Selvig's game being so good? In this case, the NAU guy said "Derek Selvig has sick skills."
I hope he can turn those skills into being a dominant player he is capable of being.

Finished watching the game. Griz just got out defensed. That's all there is to it. NAU was too quick and had the hot hands. Kudos to the refs for letting them play, it was a chippy game. The over and back call on Stockton was Bull Crap, though, and that happened right in NAU's final push that put the game away. That ref didn't have a really good angle on that call. Oh well. One play a game doesn't make. Nice win, Jacks. Really could have used Cherry's quickness tonight.

I will not shoot myself until I see the final SCORE....pa-lease????? bGrizzled perhaps, well, thanks for asking twice...Score?

Must say, again, NAU's announcer is great. He is excitable, but he's exciteable about both teams and the game itself.

NAU's announcer is very good.

I can not in any way understand why Autry isn't playing. He impressed me at Weber on Thursday. He could bring the perimeter game the griz need from their guards. Nice looking shot. Ward looked particularly awful. Steward looked solid.

With our struggles finding another guard all year, GRIZ fans have been asking the same as to why Autry is not playing more? I have been impressed with him in the time he has played. I really do wish Tinkle would go with him. He plays well w/out a lot of minutes. Imagine what he could do with a chance to get into the flow of a game. Wayne, please play Autry 20 plus minutes per game. :thumb:

I've never heard the "directional school" dis before either. Quite original.

You wouldn't think that he meant..."onward and upward," would ya? He does tend to being rather comical at times, though. Good for a good o' sardonic laugh every once in a while. Wears rather thin after a while as well but I don't hit the 'ignore' button any; that way I don't miss something that I'd really rather not know about to begin with. It makes me feel better about myself knowing there's such levels of depravity about that I wouldn't dare bother lowering myself to. One in every crowd, I guess.

As I am watching the replay, I am noticing some things I did not before.

(1) Kareem Jamar does have the skill set to be a SG.

(2) The GRIZ need to protect the ball better, and be more aware of opponents stabbing/reaching for the ball. Autry is a better ballhandler than Stockton. Stockton dribbles very high. I am surprised he is not picked more often.

(3) We need to refocus on boxing out.

1. Jamaar is a true freshman, give him some time and he will be a tremendous player. Who else are you goiong to put there right now??????

2. Stockton makes better decisions MOST of the time.... and early on Autry has NOT shown the mental toughness. He is getting better. As Al McGuire used to say: "The best thing about a Freshman is they become Sophomores."

3. When the Griz are in that matchup zone the boxing out part is a lot tougher. That is true of Zone Defenses, not sure why most people don't get that. We don't play much man D.

And the line-up needs to be Autry, Jamar, Steward, Selvig, and Q.

Tinks is slipping into some VERY bad old habits by not going with that lineup.

I agree with this line-up... Autry/Jamar can't be considered true freshman at this point in the season, and we need to stop treating them like they are....Autry especially. Stockton will be a nice player coming off the bench to spell Autry or Jamar bumping Autry over to the 2. I have completely given up on Jordan Wood.

...if they say you can learn from losing...
...we should have gotten alittle smarter...
...coming off this 'road trip'.. from hell...

... 8-)

good god Griz fans...don't hit the panic button yet...ugly weekend but BS is far from decided to quote ESPN writer...Eamonn Brennan.."if there's anything we know about college basketball, it's that you don't want to overreact to road conf losses, they happen to every team regardless of relative superiority"..lots of games to go, mostly against lower teams, get healthy, get desire up, and even get lucky! Go Griz

Regarding 1 and 2, at this stage in this season, Jamar, Steward, Autry, and Stockton need to be guard/SF rotation with Cherry out. The Wood and Adams experiment(s) has not worked one bit. Despite being Freshman Jamar and Autry, without a doubt are better players, and have proven much more. I respect Tinkle for loyality to Wood, but it is time to realize, having Wood or Adams getting playing time over Autry is causing this team right now. I do not have a problem with Stockton's playing time whatsoever. I wish I had rest the games recorded from this season. The majority of GRIZ guards handle the ball just about waist high, and do not shield the ball well. At least that is what I seen in the NAU game. Both Autry and Jamar at least protect the ball well.

Autry has not been out there enough to rates his decisions, but the results have been much better with him on the court than either Wood and Adams. Jamar for the most part makes great decisions, and makes more things happen, than anyone but Cherry, Selvig, and Qvale. Jamar's game is that of an experienced sophomore or Junior player. In my opinion, at this stage of the season, this should not even be a topic of discussion. Autry is obviously better, even as a freshman. I can only go by what I have seen during gametime. Based on that, I honestly do not see why Autry is not out there more?

As for rebounding, maybe there needs to be some things broken down on film when we play zone defense. For the most part of the year, we were rebounding well in zone. The last few weeks we have not been doing so. Our bigs are getting outhustled for lose balls, and our perimeter players are getting beat by crashing perimeter players. Something is not right, and this weekend's games it was a lot more obvious.

I hope it was all a bad weekend, but it has caused some concerns. #3 can be overcome. #1 and #2 is dependent upon the willingness of a coach to decide which player is better, regardless of class. It sounds to me, the majority of posters see Autry being the better player too. When upperclassmen are not getting the job done, it is time to build the Freshman. Even more so when that Freshman has given no reason to see himself on the bench. It is past time to go with him. :thumb:
