GRIZ at NAU

What a brutal trip. You go from thinking that you're in terrific shape with a split to thinking that 4th place in the conference is not an unlikely scenario.

No, it isn't. 8:00 left. I've seen NAU blow bigger leads with less time left.

PS - Some of you wankers need to get a grip. The Griz are still in first. Cherry isn't out for the remainder of the year. You have a slate of home games coming up with only one game left against the top 3-4 teams in conference. You lost to a very good and well coached Weber State on the road. You're losing tonight to a good NAU team on the road. Quit jumping off the bridge like your football compatriots last season. Appreciate what the hell you have.

Give me a break! For one we are now NOT in first place. And for two, we have gone in one week from having a team we thought was a March Madness caliber team to a team that feels mediocre at best. We have a right to question it.

Tinkle has to be pissed, not so much about the loss, but the lack of effort and focus. This team needs an old fashioned butt chewing. Guards have no choice but to find their game. Just because Will Cherry is out, does not mean rest of the guards need to check out. We need 2 W's back at home next week.

UNC is blowing PSU out of the bldg.

Weebs blew MSU out of the bldg.

Griz get blown out of the bldg.

Next 3 at home. To say that they are ALL must wins goes without saying.

Yes, every sports fan has the right to question and the Griz are no longer in first. Half game back now... with 3 of your last 5 conference games at home vs. the bottom of the league.

Mick Holien had a comment/quote on his blog. Something along the lines of "you're never quite as bad as you think you are and you're never quite as good as you think you are". I still say the Griz win the Big Sky this season. UNC has possibly the toughest end of the season schedule in the conference. But maybe the talk going on here on egriz about NCAA tournament runs and domination needs be tempered now?

Well, I don't know that there was any conversation about tournament domination. There was some abstract discussions about this being a team that could make a run in the NCAAs, and if they were healthy, I still believe that. With a healthy Will and with BQ, they have the pieces. What they are clearly missing -- and most of us have said it all season -- is a long-range shooter.

Damn, I'd have loved to have Platte.

I too wondered why Autry was not out there. When he has played, he shows he is a good player. Is there something he is not doing that keeps him from more playing time? Could he be dinged up too? I do agree with Dub, it is not a good sign with any combination of Stockton, Wood, and Adams on the court at one time.

I think it is past time to get Autry his minutes, Jamar or Steward at 2 guard as well. Woods and Adams, have yet to prove anything this year, despite much opportunity. Stockton is a solid player, but certainly not someone to expect scoring from. In Cherry's absence, Autry, Jamar, and Steward are much better options than either Wood or Adams.

Speaking of Wood and Adams, will either or both be gone next season? The addition of Henderson and Gregory, 2 talented freshman guards might force that to happen.

BTW, as I am waiting for the replay of GRIZ/NAU on Fox AZ, AZ and Cal are in triple overtime. Best game of the year I have seen. Tune in folks. :thumb:

Hands off Eric Platt. ;) It's going to be hard to replace him and Cameron Jones next year.

I can see any of the top four teams right now doing what it takes to host the conference tournament this year. But based on the past few years, maybe it's best to come in as the 2nd, 3rd or 4th seed? Isn't PSU the last home/host team to win the Big Sky tourney?

I used the wrong description there. Thanks for the correction on the "domination" statement of mine.

We lose Qvale after this season. He will not be easy to replace.

But other than that, we're in very good shape. MSU, NAU, UNC all lose a TON. Weebs has just about everyone back as well.

We can't drink as much kool-aid as we want on our own fan site? Better do what the three total NAU fans say! I'm sorry that your silly little joke of a directional college doesn't have its own fan site that you can knock on the Griz from.

Enjoy the win, back to obscurity for you now.

Always a pleasure, dub-foncy. I completely enjoy the irony in getting reprimanded for sh** talking from you. I don't come here to talk smack. I come here because I like talking Big Sky sports and because the Griz have a great fan base.

I've never heard the "directional school" dis before either. Quite original.

MtJ, where the hell does NAU find their shooters? Man, they ALWAYS have guys who can bomb it.

The Howland/Adras recruiting philosophy - Recruit to Shoot. Have the art of spotting good shooters down.

What do you guys think this Dub Foncy kid is really like away from a computer? Sometimes I think he's probably just like he acts here - a complete ASS and has no friends, but maybe he's just an internet tough guy and maybe he's a nice guy outside of egriz.

The recruiting mantra since Ben Howland was in Flagstaff has been "recruit to shoot". That's carried over to Adras's run as coach. I had the pleasure of watching Stephen Sir, Ross Land and Kelly Golob all put up some fantastic three point numbers as Lumberjacks.

Cameron Jones grew up wanting to play Pac-10. Don't think he got no more than a sniff by Pac-10 teams. NAU knew he could score and gave him a shot even though he's not an "above the rim" athletic type of player. Gabe Rogers got little interest at all from Division I schools and hopped on a bus to go to school in Flagstaff without ever having been to Arizona or to mountains in his life. NAU has to take chances on guys that other teams haven't. The Skydome or Rolle Activity Center won't attract McDonalds All Americans so they have to look for diamonds in the rough. Quite often it has worked in their favor. Coach Adras rants and raves a lot and from what I've sen, is somewhat of a taskmaster as a coach, but he's shown the ability to develop players.

As I am watching the replay, I am noticing some things I did not before.

(1) Kareem Jamar does have the skill set to be a SG.

(2) The GRIZ need to protect the ball better, and be more aware of opponents stabbing/reaching for the ball. Autry is a better ballhandler than Stockton. Stockton dribbles very high. I am surprised he is not picked more often.

(3) We need to refocus on boxing out.
