My observations in reaction to some of the posters on here is "how high are you guys?". There's a guy complaining about the O-line without conceding that Coach Hauck didn't recruit a single guy off that line except maybe Anderson, who I'm not sure saw the field. Another scholar is talking about how he's used to Coach Hauck taking his foot off the gas, I assume he means Hauck shouldn't have let those receivers drop passes, shouldn't have let the number 13 team in the Nation make plays. And I agree the "green as an elf's dick" offensive line should have done a better job of moving a veteran defensive line with an All-American on it. Pot won't be legal in Canada until October 18, some of you south of the border jumped the cue. That was a great Griz win by a soon to be great but very young Griz team!
Whether Hauck "let off the gas" is debatable at best I agree, but why the hell are we running a hurry-up offense and leaving 20 seconds on the play-clock with an 11 point lead with 7-8 minutes left in the 4th quarter (and UNI only having 1 time-out left)? THAT is what allowed UNI to make it close. We could have taken 4-5 minutes off the clock in the 2nd half if we maximized the play-clock the whole half. Stitt did the same thing several times, and it cost us a win vs Cal-Poly. Only on the final drive did we run the play-clock down to a few seconds. When you have a big lead over a higher-ranked team in the 2nd-half, why wouldn't you milk the clock? I
Not sure that you are correct on UM running the hurry-up late in the game, but the definition of taking the foot off the gas would have been coming out in the second half and changing the gameplay to milk the clock.
The problem in the 2d half was not picking up 1st downs and not converting on 3d dow, and eventually not stopping NI on 3d down and 4th down.
Look at the number of plays in each drive in the 2d half:
4-9
4-17
3-5
6-16
3-8
5-20
Lost first drive on zones when we didn't convert on 3d and short and 4th and short. Then 4 punts in a row.
UNI ran 82 plays, the Griz 70 ... neither exactly a torrid pace.signedbewildered said:And more isn't always better.
The play count was pretty significant between us or is it just my imagination?
Yes, I am too lazy to look.
My explanation is that our young OL was out-manned by the veteran UNI DL; while our pass blocking was good, we could not move the ball on the ground and struggled in the 2nd half on third downs. This led to a 2nd half TOP advantage for UNI and it began to wear down our defense, particularly in the trenches. We played above our head in the first half and only because our skill position players were better than UNI's were we able to hang on in the second half. I did not see BH taking his foot off the gas; he was not calling plays. Our good breaks came in the first half, our bad ones in the second. Like most MVFC top teams, few teams consistently beat them at the line of scrimmage. We will see teams in the BSC with better skill position play than UNI, but doubt we will see one better in the trenches.Grizzoola said:I couldn't watch the game, got something online. I don't have the stats, but it looks like UM won the 1st half, but UNI damned near came close to winning the second (and most important) half.
C'mon, Bobby, don't overthink your strategy. Keep winning until the final buzzer (whatever). Goddam. I do know BH gets too conservative when ahead in the 4th qtr. He's got to go full tilt in the 4th, because that's what his opponents will do. Don't take your foot off the gas, BH!
You obviously didn't even watch the game. The Griz didn't take their foot off the gas in any respect. Hauck wasn't conservative at all. Was passing out of the end zone on the drives late in the game.

I'm not questioning anything about play-calling,or "taking the foot off the gas", just the fact that we snapped the ball with 20 seconds left on the play-clock the entire 2nd-half, outside of the final drive. Using the entire play-clock (with a huge lead in the 4th quarter) has nothing to do with play-calling.

It's not about who recruited the O-line, or that NIU had a great defensive line. None of that changes the fact that our O-line could not block for the running game, and this going to be a big problem going forward. We will play other teams with solid defenses, and we need to be able to run the ball. Bottom line.....Excuses don't cut it. Performance does.
Agreed, PERFORMANCE is THEY WON! It seems like some of the posters on here are the ones making EXCUSES "sure the Griz won, but, but, but, what about, this that and the other."
It IS about who recruited the O-line! You play the cards you are dealt but we'd all love to be holding pocket bullets and not Seven-Duece off suit. I think the Griz coaches cobbled together a decent line with not as much to work with as one might hope. (And that is no criticism to any of those young Griz warriors, just a fact that they didn't have a whole lot of seasoning)
It IS about UNI's line! That kid in the 7 jersey was a Pre-Season All-American, remember him? I don't since he didn't do jack against our line. They were very good and experienced. A reason is not the same as an excuse; one guy climbed the M and the other guy failed to summit Everest, but to your thinking the second guy shouldn't make "excuses".
Our run game will be fine, takes time.

Our run will not be fine this year, except against the patsies we play, like Drake et. al. I am quite sure you will come on here after we gain a bunch of ground yardage next week to say "see I told you so". You didn't see the NIU game, but you know all about #7 not doing jack??? You must telepathic. I guess he was not part of the defense who totally throttled our running game. You are a fan, we get it. But stop trying to sugar coat what is obvious to most of us about our O-line. Bobby knows it too, and has stated it both publicly, and privately.
Possibly miking the clock early like you suggest would be viewed as "taking the foot off the gas."Zirg said:I don't pretend to know more than Timm Rosenbach about what play to call, and I thought he did a great job and I am not criticizing any playcall. There were several dropped passes in the 2nd half on good play-calls, so it wasn't like he made worse play-calls in the 2nd-half or Hauck let off the gas in that respect. I don't care what play we call but why wouldn't we run the play-clock (if the game-clock is running) down to 2-3 seconds in the fourth quarter (with a huge lead) versus a higher ranked team that had 1 (and then 0 time-outs) left until the last drive? If I didn't delete the game from my tv, I would go back and add up all the seconds/minutes the Griz could have used up by not snapping the ball so early (when the game-clock is running) in the 2nd half and I bet it's in the 4-5 minute range. I doubt anyone else is willing to do it, so If they re-run the game, I'll record it and do it. And while I, personally, would have milked every second the entire second half after being up 26-0, I am really only critical of the 2nd and 3rd to-last possessions we had in the 4th quarter when the clock was UNI's main enemy and we, inexplicably snapped the ball with 15-20 seconds on a moving clock several times. I was fine with keeping the hurry-up to start the 3rd quarter because "if it ain't broke, why fix it"?, but clock-wasting needs to be utilized way before the last drive with 3 minutes left in the game if the circumstances call for it. And this game called for it.

That was an incorrect call by the refs. The refs threw a late flag due to the chirping by the NI bench. The refs should be sanctioned for their crappy call.

They missed a bunch of stuff, including a horrific spot on 4th down as well as the left guard for UNI false starting 20 times during the game.
