Good- underclassmen contributing valuable playing time (that I remember) this season
Freshmen (true and RS)- Walker, Grossman, Ostmo, Elwell, McGourin, Fouch, Turner, Mamula, Ganoung, Anderson, Gubner. (11)
Sophomores (true and RS)- Sulser, Knight, Kanouse, Alford, Welnel, McGinnis, Hauck, Flowers, Eastwood, O'Connell, Martin, Keintz, Roberts, Rensvold, Demings (2), Nelson (17)
That is 28 underclassmen providing valuable playing time and gaining experience. Also, a lot more with great potential, but just buried behind terrific players, or injured. A few more that have seen mop up duty. I thought Roberts is a redshirt Fr, but listed as a sophomore. The future is looking bright with these young guys.
Also, something we haven't mentioned yet...….Coaching.
This staff has done an outstanding job with player development, instilling confidence, and building a championship caliber attitude with the whole team. This confidence started with the staff and SR's. It has spread throughout the whole roster. Also play design and play calling has been terrific, especially on offense. The staff has put the team in position to succeed. The Cal Davis game, was finally the game where the Defensive staff followed suit. The difference, the players are now executing the plays as whole units. We are seeing these players mentally mature, well ahead of expectations. Every game this season, I've thought to myself, how well the plays are designed. I was pretty happy to see and hear the Root announcers mention great play designs a few times against Davis.
Player leadership took another step forward against Davis. Sneed started it early by really jumping JLM early for miscommunications on a pass play. Shortly thereafter, JLM manned up with sensational plays, with Sneed. Sneed showed more leadership in actually getting down, when running the ball. He controlled his competitive nature, and improved results for the team. They both manned up, and the results spoke volumes. Olson made a few key big plays, and set the tone for a great defensive effort, against a great offense. As minor as those things seem, they are contagious, in a positive way.
To me, the likes of Olson, Sneed, JLM, Sims are showing their own accountability, and now holding every player accountable as well. That is making a huge difference in players disciplining themselves to do their responsibilities the best they can. This year, we are seeing TD saving pass break ups, solo tackles, and efforts that were big plays for our opponents last season. Quite the difference in results in a year of maturation.
The bad: our fan base is being cautiously optimistic and still kind of wondering, is this team for real, or will they come back to earth? To me, this team has great coaching and player leadership. I believe this team is heading toward being the real deal. Let's just continue to enjoy this game by game. I'm trying my best to not get overly confident, but it is hard to not be confident after this game.
I really cannot find anything ugly as a whole team. The closest I can find is a possible 10 point swing in favor of Davis from Knight's turnover, then a roughing the kicker foul, resulting in a Davis TD.
Great job GRIZ!!!
