Good, Bad, Ugly - UC Davis

Good - The turnout by Griz Nation. It looked like nearly as many Griz fans as Davis fans. They made a lot of noise and it was great to see. Don't know if most were local or travelers but after the weather today I wish I would have been there.

During part of the game I was cooking in the kitchen and when a big play would happen you could hear the crowd get loud. Normally you know the home team did something good, but the Griz crowd was as loud if not louder than the Davis fans. Most of the time the Griz made the big play.

Good- underclassmen contributing valuable playing time (that I remember) this season
Freshmen (true and RS)- Walker, Grossman, Ostmo, Elwell, McGourin, Fouch, Turner, Mamula, Ganoung, Anderson, Gubner. (11)
Sophomores (true and RS)- Sulser, Knight, Kanouse, Alford, Welnel, McGinnis, Hauck, Flowers, Eastwood, O'Connell, Martin, Keintz, Roberts, Rensvold, Demings (2), Nelson (17)
That is 28 underclassmen providing valuable playing time and gaining experience. Also, a lot more with great potential, but just buried behind terrific players, or injured. A few more that have seen mop up duty. I thought Roberts is a redshirt Fr, but listed as a sophomore. The future is looking bright with these young guys.

Also, something we haven't mentioned yet...….Coaching.
This staff has done an outstanding job with player development, instilling confidence, and building a championship caliber attitude with the whole team. This confidence started with the staff and SR's. It has spread throughout the whole roster. Also play design and play calling has been terrific, especially on offense. The staff has put the team in position to succeed. The Cal Davis game, was finally the game where the Defensive staff followed suit. The difference, the players are now executing the plays as whole units. We are seeing these players mentally mature, well ahead of expectations. Every game this season, I've thought to myself, how well the plays are designed. I was pretty happy to see and hear the Root announcers mention great play designs a few times against Davis.

Player leadership took another step forward against Davis. Sneed started it early by really jumping JLM early for miscommunications on a pass play. Shortly thereafter, JLM manned up with sensational plays, with Sneed. Sneed showed more leadership in actually getting down, when running the ball. He controlled his competitive nature, and improved results for the team. They both manned up, and the results spoke volumes. Olson made a few key big plays, and set the tone for a great defensive effort, against a great offense. As minor as those things seem, they are contagious, in a positive way.

To me, the likes of Olson, Sneed, JLM, Sims are showing their own accountability, and now holding every player accountable as well. That is making a huge difference in players disciplining themselves to do their responsibilities the best they can. This year, we are seeing TD saving pass break ups, solo tackles, and efforts that were big plays for our opponents last season. Quite the difference in results in a year of maturation.

The bad: our fan base is being cautiously optimistic and still kind of wondering, is this team for real, or will they come back to earth? To me, this team has great coaching and player leadership. I believe this team is heading toward being the real deal. Let's just continue to enjoy this game by game. I'm trying my best to not get overly confident, but it is hard to not be confident after this game.

I really cannot find anything ugly as a whole team. The closest I can find is a possible 10 point swing in favor of Davis from Knight's turnover, then a roughing the kicker foul, resulting in a Davis TD.

Great job GRIZ!!!

Bad:

- Knight fumble that led to points
- roughing the kicker penalty that led to points

I thought the Knight fumble was bullshit. His forward momentum had clearly been stopped and it should have been whistled dead. One of the 3 Davis defenders stripped the ball away while the other 2 ganged up and stood him still. It was bad officiating in my opinion!

I thought Fouch was blocking that punt for sure while watching live. After reviewing, he was about an inch away from the clean block which would have negated the penalty. I don’t fault a player for an effort play like that despite the penalty and eventual Davis score. It very easily could have been a huge play in the Griz’s favor.

Can't fault Davis for playing that out, just as it is coached. That is why coaches harp on those things continually. I guarantee, Knight also got a butt chewing for not remembering that.

Is there a “Great” category? Because if there was, you’d put TACKLING in it. I have never in all my years as a Griz fan, seen such perfect form tackling as I did today. It was a pure joy to watch. Got to the point where I just knew that if someone was in the vicinity and got a hand on their guy, he was going DOWN. Makes such a ton of difference when they’re not getting 4, 5, 8 yards after first contact every play.

Ugly? Hard to find any ugly on the Griz in that one. Bob Green would say (yelling) “some people are never satisfied- it’s like you’re on a date with a supermodel and you are checking her for moles!”

Also in the “GREAT’ category: Our rushing attack. 260 yards rushing. Averaged SIX yards per carry. While giving up just 60 in 31 attempts.

And I distinctly recall someone on here saying Meier was going to throw for 400. I said I’d take the under....turns out he was WAY under, getting just 275 (and 291 for the team). That’s just 350 yards of offense by what was, by all accounts, the best offense in the BSC.

And in the “Good” category, I’d add Purdy’s performance. 1/1 on FG’s, 6/6 on PAT’s, especially after last week...

Ugly was on the other channel - saw NAU commit two PI calls on the same drive, giving the Cats about 45 yards and bailing them out of 3rd and longs for the go-ahead score. It was like a car wreck - I’m sorry I looked at it.

Good: Coaching coach Hauck and staff are doing an amazing job. Even the pundents on this site are beginning to realize what RTD means. UC Davis played Cal Berkley and NDSU better on the road than they did against this Montana team at home. The offensive line, has been much maligned for the better part of the last 4 or 5 seasons.....No more, this group is deep and talented. Moses Mallory was a huge addition (no, literally the man weighs 350 lbs.!) They dominated the trenches and controlled the game in the 2nd half. Sneed was flushed a time or two but took no sacks yesturday great showing. Bad: two weeks in a row we have had some good receivers drop balls gotta clean that up. I don't know why you would go for a block punt when you have the best return man in the country waiting to catch the ball. I know he almost got it but that only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. Ugly: go look outside it's not even October yet and it's cold and loud. You know, with the wind being the loud part.

Ugly: Eastwood fumbles on his only carry. (I know he was called down, but Bobby took him right back out of the game for that.)

Yep. Was going to say that. His first carry (I think) and he fumbles the ball. Ouch. Might be a long, long time before he touches the ball again.

Go Griz!

Good: Hearing "Jerry, Jerry, Jerry..." through the TV
Knowing I probably wasn't the only one chanting the
same thing in my livingroom
The kittens keep there joke of a ranking at least 1
more week.... #FTC
GO GRIZ #RTD

like the old adage says starts with the offensive line.....they plum exerted their will over the d/l and owned them in the run and pass game.....this was the key to the game in my mind......plus we played a lot of different people and they all performed at a high level.....really the o/l deserve the game ball imo.....p.s. I think Mallory actually showed by example how to be physical when he arrived on scene.

I agree with both. I have no issues with either. The Griz played so damn well that I was having a hard time even coming up with any “bad” so I just threw thise out there as it’s the only “kinda cruddy” stuff that happened.
