From player to specatator, the tale of an Oregon Duck

Typical college athlete...ohh poor me...my life was so hard and we were slaves making money for the school....take your free ride..enjoy not having student loans..and STFU!

Letters like that mean little without a real name attached to them, it could just be somebody acting like a former player IMO. When real players start putting a face to these type of complaints then maybe people will wake up and appreciate them. Until that time i remain skeptical.

This was my experience with Duck fans in Eugene when the Griz played them several times in the past. I am sure there are some nice people that call themselves Duck fans, but the ones I encountered were rude and disdainful towards Griz fans. It's the reason I hate the Ducks.

Fuck yes he's right....The stands are FULL of idiots and morons who think they know more than the players & coaches...Hell, there's one asshole in my living room who I'd like to beat the living f**k out of every Saturday afternoon...

Thank you. Thank you, Ursus. I was crying in my beer last night because not a single poster had acknowledged this beautiful piece of work of mine.

Pure brilliance, AZ! Self deprecating humor seems to be a foreign concept to many on this board.

Just another example of someone not knowing WTF they are talking about.

Taking your original point... you think? I can't figure out how the guy I sat a couple rows behind at the Griz game the other day made the Ducks game.

 That's funny. I know at least two fans around me last week found me offensive. However, at least I acknowledge that I don't know anything vs. acting like I play better than the players and coach better than the coaches.

Having lived in Portland for the past seven years, I can attest to this kind of behavior in Autzen stadium. I've attended a handful of games there over the years. Some experiences were better than others, but generally this behavior is accepted. My wife and I left at halftime a few years ago when the Oregon played Utah. The Ducks had the game handled early. There was some drunk witch about 4 rows behind us screaming at the top of her lungs..."F this" and "F that". "F the refs" "F the coaches" etc. This went on the entire first half even though the Ducks were rolling. I expected someone near here to shut her up, but I got the impression she was being encouraged and provoked instead. 2 hours of that was more than we could handle, so we bailed and listened to the game on the radio as we headed home. The game was a forgettable win for the Ducks, but was memorable experience for us.

Autzen is a beautiful stadium and makes for a great atmosphere (especially when Game Day is in town) and the team is a ton if fun to watch. It's too bad the experience gets ruined by people who forget they live in a society. I was always content to watch the game on TV even if I could get free tickets.

I honestly don't believe Griz fans would have allowed that to go on, especially with kids in the area. I think Oregon is its own little world and doesn't represent football fans as a whole.

That being said, being back in Missoula and attending games in WGS this season has been fun and refreshing for my wife and I.

I think Brint nailed it in the original thread.

I can understand the frustration and reaction to the fans, but be careful that you don't bite the hand that feeds you.

It's really easy to call fans out after your playing days are done. But being the subject of that fandom (fan being short for fanatic - as Cowherd always says), definitely had its perks while playing didn't it? Similar to celebrities who complain about similar items, if you don't like the small bits of negative that come along with the territory, you better be willing to give up all the huge positives too.

Holy crap we agree on something? Ha ha, just messing around.

Here's my post in the other thread:

tl:dr - fans are dumb and not allowed to have opinions.

---

BTW - A lot of Duck fans are mega d-bags, so it's no surprise that he goes into a stadium full of fickle fans that don't know what the hell they're talking about. And heck yeah, that happens at Wa Griz and every stadium in the country. It's uncalled for and embarrassing to the rest of us who want to enjoy the game and support the kids playing in it.

On the other side of the coin there's the vast majority of college football fans that go to games to enjoy them and support the players. Many of whom not only go to games but are also boosters who donate so many of those players can have part of their cost of education paid for (or all of their education if they're getting an FBS scholarship). So yeah, tell all fans to f*ck off, good work - unbeknownst to him a lot of fans support built that stadium he played in, helped provide funding to bring together him and his teammates, paid for upgrades and improvements, and continually donate pay for scholarships. F- them indeed.

As a non-Duck fan, I can attest to this article. One of the worst fan experiences I've ever been a part of in Autzen stadium last season.

We should merge these two threads. I'll spare everyone the details again, but the game day experience in Autzen is often ruined outrageous fans with no filter.

Also, John Canzano posted a response letter from another player willing to sign his name. His reaction is similar, but his response is much more level headed that the original.

Looks like this former player thinks fans don't understand the game.

"...instead of criticizing facets of the game in which they truly, from a football standpoint, do not understand."
