Former AD O'Day: "We probably should have moved up"

Well, here’s something I wasn’t expecting to see today. Just a couple of hours ago, Boise State put out a teaser for what looks to be a big announcement tomorrow, quite possibly a move to the Big 12 or another conference? For the move up crowd around here, tomorrow could be a big day for you all.

They’ve been talking about moving on from the MWC for a while now. I know UM, MSU, and NDSU have been discussed as options for addition to the MWC in MWC circles if BSU, CSU, Air Force, and SDSU were to move on. If Gonzaga and Memphis aren’t interested in filling the void if those kind of departures happened, and the conference isn't looking to add Texas schools, there’s a real possibility the MWC reaches out to the three regional FCS powers to gauge interest, and this time around I would hope MSU would t hold us back. They’re in a better position financially than us now so if there ever was a time it would be in the near future. Crossing my fingers 🙏

It does have the tone of conference realignment but then again it might just have something to do with ending on the Boise State logo / Nike Swoosh logo.

What would have to change for UM to move up without MSU? Is this conjoining of the two schools set-in-stone for ever and ever? Is there NO way around it? I'm just curious. I never totally understood it.

The Boise state video is interesting. If it was conference reallignment, those things tend to leak out. I'm not seeing anything on Boise state currently. Only rumors that appear to be wildly flying would be Gonzaga to Big East. I don't think they would go over 12 basketball schools so taking on Boise state there doesn't make sense unless they really want Gonzaga to have a travel partner out west. My guess is it facility upgrades and master plan type stuff at Boise, maybe even NIL related.

I kind of wondered that too but the narration in the video talked about the changing landscape of college athletics and athletic departments are faced with a decision. Could be they've just done a really good job of not letting it get out.

My friends at Boise State are telling me it is an initiative to raise money, improve facilities, position themselves for changing landscape in future. Either they are really keeping tight secrets there or that is what it really is.

UM fans would have to change for UM to move up with or without MSU. The fans haven’t been interested in changing as a result of UM steamrolling over opponents most years since becoming a member of the Big Sky Conference. The administration has taken the easy way out since the stadium is full and the majority of the fans are happy.
Now, with the shortfall of enrollment and the resulting financial challenges, a move up may not be possible should the opportunity come our way once again.

And it's a new facilities master plan for Boise State. What an odd announcement. They were really hyping it up in a way to make you seem like they were leaving the Mountain West. That's poor Marketing on their part. Cool for them though, this is gonna be a big project with some cool stuff. Take note UM.

So this is coming as Swinney speculates. He says 40 or 50 teams, BIG, PAC, SEC and ACC have more than that combined now. Would they ditch weak sisters in those conferences just for football? Could they even keep them together if they did? I think it will be a bigger number than 50 because I doubt they'll blow up the big boy leagues.

I'd hope UM is ready to move when that time comes and it will most likely be within 5 or 10 years. Then move to the G5 or whatever it will be called. I'd bet budgets for smaller schools with low attendance may force some to move football to a lower scholly level. If the economy tanks money will get tighter for government spending and higher ed will get hurt. To the coming chagrin of the fans in Boise, I doubt they make that club.

I really should have purchased a truckload of Intel and Apple stock 35 years ago. Please discuss ( an re-discuss topics perpetually).

I agree UM and MSU could compete very well in the MWC. Further, I think if UM had joined the WAC years ago they would be in the MWC. I think UM would have gotten in over San Jose State. UM would probably be in the Mountain division with Utah State, Wyoming, Colorado State, Air Force and New Mexico.

Boise would have always preferred to be in the West Division.

I saw an article about a month ago saying that UM and MSU have both "softned" on moving and have talked to the MWC recently. I almost posted it on here, but didn't want to be accused of starting another "move up" thread.

The MWC could be losing some teams in the next few years. Boise is trying to position themselves for the Big 12. And they have an ally in BYU, no doubt. Plus San Diego State and possibly AF and Colorado State could be interested in moving if they had the right opportunity.

I think there is a chance (probably a small chance) that UM and MSU could be invited to the MWC in the next 5-10 years.

The MWC would love to have Texas schools. Just not the ones they could realistically get.

You still got the article? I'd like to see it.

I will see if I can find it. It has been a month or so.
If you come across stuff like that, you should absolutely post it, it's informational. The posts that I don't like seeing are the ones that say "The Griz should move because I want them to", that's just annoying, but when you come across stuff like this you should absolutely post it.

I think this is (1) overlooked and (2) correct.
