Former AD O'Day: "We probably should have moved up"

Didn't say I wanted them to stay, just pointing out what may be holding it up.

I know you would make good decisions. I'm just pointing out what has held it up in the past.

I may be a fan, but I am also a realist... I know that MSU wasn't ready to move up when UM was in their hay-day. I also don't understand why everyone hates a good wet blanket. It is like a weighted blanket, but cold...

UM didn’t move up because the fans have little interest and the administration made a weak effort to make it happen. At this point I would doubt it will or can happen unless reorganization within the NCAA makes a change necessary. With our historic lack of leadership, I wouldn’t be surprised to see UM in a Division 2 level conference with Dixie State and Northern Colorado. If they have play offs, the Griz fans will be happy.

hey greenie, on the 'politics board' i am going to post the link a short south china morning post article by a ucla professor. just asking if you'll take a look over there, i'll explain why in the thread. thanks.

as for moving up, i personally like the fcs, but not the bsc. if the griz had moved up, i wonder how the drop in enrollment, engstrom, the pflugrad issue, etc, would have affected the move?

please forgive my sin. greenie has good analytical skills, and may be interested in the subject of the article i was hoping he would look at, but if he's not interested in responding, that's cool. sorry to not meet your standards for posting.

Honestly I would be a huge fan of this and I think the state of FCS football as things continue to change is only going to get worse. Even Montana state I feel at this point would probably want to make the move if the Mountain West came calling. What I'm seeing:

-San Diego State is finishing up their on campus stadium and investing heavily on their facilities. The Pac12 will never take them so getting to the Big12 is their best bet.

-Boise State is apparently now doing the same, this combined with news on the MWC board that both Boise and OSUs presidents were meeting seems to me there is probably some interest in the Big12 to add them.

-AF and CSU were approached by the AAC to join as both have desires to play more games in Texas, also at least in CSUs case potential expansion candidates for the Big12.

With all of this I feel the most likely scenario would be to see Boise and San Diego State moving to the Big 12 (Name recognition and exposure on West Coast) opening the door for both us and the Cats. Conference would look like:

MOUNTAIN DIVISION:
Montana, MSU, WYO, CSU, USU, New Mexico

(STATES: MT, WY, CO, UT, NM)

WEST DIVISION:
FSU, SJSU, UNR, UNLV, Hawaii, AF

(STATES: CA, NV, CO, HI)

Could swap AF with UNM but figured AF would want the West Coast exposure. Also if worried about AF and CSU leaving for the AAC eventually could then add either UTEP and NMSU or NDSU and SDSU (or both) but I personally would want the Dakota State schools, could end up looking like:

MOUNTAIN DIVISION:
Montana, MSU, WYO, USU, NDSU/NMSU, SDSU/UTEP

(STATES: MT, WY, UT, ND/NM, SD/TX)

WEST DIVISION:
FSU, SJSU, Hawaii, UNM, UNR, UNLV

(STATES: CA, HI, NV, NM)

If UTEP and NMSU joined would be an easy Divisional swap with USU. Regardless alot more upside in the MWC and would love to see teams like Wyoming, Nevada and CSU in WA Griz.

See though, if Boise and CSU and AF leave, those are three of the closest regional teams. I think that dampens my interest in the whole thing.

I'm guessing they are positioning to grab a seat at the Sooper Dooper Big Boy table when that time comes. Just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic in either case as far as I can see.

Of course this should have happened. Hardly a revelation by Jim.

I look at what Boise’s football success has done for that entire university and know without a doubt that could have been Montana. Small thinking leads to small results.

Did you listen to the interview. Jim didn't say what the OP said? Of course, UM shouldn't have moved up.

Yes I listened to the entire interview, days before the OP posted about it. Yes, Jim said exactly that, that UM should have moved FBS. Yes, of COURSE Montana should have moved up. Yes ABSOLUTELY Montana should move FBS at the absolute earliest opportunity.

Then quote his words and say where it is. I listened twice and didn’t hear those words. Thx.

18:54 mark has the O’Day quote. Listening to that again frustrates me. You have the ultimate Bizon homer breaking down the FCS into “tier one” which only includes UNDSU, and “tier 1 1/2” with UM and MSU. Little scuz just couldn’t resist doing that out of context when discussing moving up.

But the thing I really dislike is O’Day’s multiple references to “big schools”. “Some of the big schools”, “compete with the big schools”, “like the big schools do”, etc. I know he’s not making decisions for UM anymore, but I’ve always thought the “aw shucks, we’re just little ol’ Montany” mentality has held us back as much as anything.

You are right on about the mentality and it certainly is prevalent with Griz fans.

As I have said all along, O'Day did NOT say UM should have moved up. He said: "Interestingly enough, the study showed we probably should have moved up." Note he said the STUDY showed that. Not that HE said that. In fact, he goes on to explain why they felt they were at the right spot and also mentioned various risks. I looked at the study then, and read the article I posted above again. The study showed that UM didn't have the funds to move up.

Could some of you please stop dreaming and making up stuff. And try sticking with the facts. I wonder how many mistakes in business Everett makes when he can't listen or read correctly?

Thx, CDA.

I've found that a lot of Griz fans have the pie-in-the-sky and windmill-chasing mentalities. Yes, we should have moved up. "While moving up would result in some additional revenue, it would still have left us almost $2 million short of the annual necessary revenue, and tens of millions behind on needed new facilities. Let's move up anyway, and hope the WAC doesn't fold the next year."

I just gave the timestamp. I'm not reading too much into it, but that last part above is a bit much. I've met EG. I've shaken EG's hand. He's a good dude and a good Griz fan. So are you. I know you're probably just joking, but I don't want people to think ill of him or you.

Apologies. Here ends the preaching; praise be to Griz. :thumb:

I meant every word I said. I know who he is. Many of Everett’s posts are stupid, like his last one (where he lied). He doesn’t understand football or Griz football.
