Football and Concussions!

WHOA! There is not any right way, or wrong way to be a parent. Each parent makes decisions, he and/or she feels comfortable with . Sorry, but telling someone how to parent, their kid, is not right.

No matter what, I hope and wish the best for every parent, that their children will turnout to be great people as adults, no matter how they are raised.

Its not about living vicariously through your kid, at least it isnt for me.

I will let my son participate in whatever it is that he loves to do and I will support him, I will also support him if he chooses not to participate in something.

Its about choice and freedom.

Its as simple as this message board if you dont like a poster dont read what he posts. If you dont like concussions dont play contact sports. Its a choice you should make personally......not a choice you should make for others.

do you believe in karma? your guy is gonna grow up to be a gay soccer player. he's never going to touch a drink, he'll hate guns, will vote democrat, respect women, and have season tickets to his nearest nba franchise. :thumb:
If kid grow up to be a gay soccer player, sober, hating guns, voting Democrat, respecting women, why would you feel threatened by that? They already exist and the world still goes on....for some with concussions, it ends prematurely...Front page article in the NYTimes just yesterday about the relationship of symptoms and outcomes of concussions and battlefield stress syndrome...there is a price to pay

Uh... I'm not sure if you meant exactly what you typed there, but we all know damn well that there certainly are many, many WRONG ways to be a parent. Some people are idiots and should not be allowed to reproduce. Think about the inept parents that beat their kids to death because the kids won't stop crying. Or here's another example - a couple days ago I saw about a five year old kid that looked like he was supporting a tattoo. It looked real but I suppose it could have been fake. At any rate, my 12 year old son asked me why parents would let, or force their five year old to have a tattoo. I said it's because they are shitty parents.

"Whoa?" Sorry if I didn't communicated what i meant! Every parent has every right to put their child in harm's way and to live with it. I'm not trying to infringe, but if you want your child to play after concussion...fine! My kid will kick your kid's ass though...just saying!!!!

I love my son! I think he'd be a great Free Safety for the Griz! He's five! What's wrong with me? More about parent ego than what the kid gets out of it.

i'm late to the party and am trying to figure out your stance here. are you against all sports? is your belief that any parent who lets there kids play sports is doing so for egotistical reasons?!

i put my children in harms way every day. i feed them in the morning and kids choke to death every day. i drive them to school every day and we all know what a death trap driving can be. thousands of deaths every day. i send them to school every day and as we've seen, school is a dangerous place. bullying, school shootings, and teacher molesters just to name a few. and don't even get me started on recess. you know how many kids die on playgrounds every year?! then there is the russian roulette we call lunch. let's face it....that's every bit as dangerous as breakfast! and you're not going to believe this....i let them play outside when they get home! and i don't even follow them wherever they go! i mean, between soccer balls, basketballs, jumpropes, (which let's face it...is basically a noose) strangers, pedophiles, rocks, bikes, scooters, erratic drivers, trees, pavement, swimming pools, candy, skateboards, popsicle sticks, frisbees, etc....i'm just begging for trouble.

i am a terrible father. if you'd be so kind, who you mind giving me some more advice today? really have nothing going on except to wait for one on my children to die which they definitely will do based on my wreckless parenting skills.....

He's the same guy who was not aware of any sexual assault issues in his 18 years in academics. While "clueless" is an accurate description, it's also being charitable.

I hate to hop in here but while football leads in youth sports injuries the fact is when it comes to concussions Girls soccer is the leader (by a bunch) When it comes to serious injuries/deaths Soccer (Boys) followed by Soccer (girls) and then cheerleading all beat football.

Girls are known not to be developed enough to play soccer (which they don't in many parts of the world. Their upper spines and necks are weak enough that heading or a minor twist can cause very serious concussions....

If they do get a room, why would you feel threatened by that? Lots of people get rooms. Sometimes it ends prematurely.

Please tell me you are not a UM student or grad because your inability to comprehend is matched only by your lack of humor.

I'd like to see where you got your numbers because every study i have seen has football highest followed by soccer, basketball, baseball. For girls, soccer, basketball, softball. Football hands down accounting for the most concussion. The only exception to is when you add in ice hockey for both boys and girls or field hockey. The trend is relatively close between high school and college with more occurring at the collegiate level. You may be confusing the rate of concussion in total injuries is higher for girls in sports in which BOTH genders play. Also contributing to that is females having a higher rate of self-reporting injuries, especially concussions. The second study included cheerleading, and most of those injuries were at the college level, and used data collected over the past 30 years.

"In high school sports played by both sexes, girls sustained a higher rate of
concussions, and concussions represented a greater proportion of total injuries than in boys."

"The majority of concussions in high school athletes resulted from participation in football, followed by girls' soccer, boys' soccer, and girls' basketball."
