Yep! Why do we even let these kids wear helmets and knee pads? We are raising a generation of pussies!! It’s the bitches and the liberals fault. We should remove them from society by putting them all in isolated work camps where we can keep an eye on them and stop them from screwing everything up!

Football will cease to be exist as a major sport within 50 years, via lawsuits and safety concerns. Think I'm crazy? It wasnt that long ago (30s-20s) that the top spectator sports were 1) Baseball, 2) Boxing, 3) Horse Racing. Look what litigation has done to the tobacco industry. People knew the risks when they puffed a cigarette.

Fast food industry may also be in trouble, as places like McDonalds get hit with lawsuits because of obesity issues.

Interesting comments. Here's a thought...reduce the helmet size to something like the old leather ones from yesteryear....no face guards. Result? Dramatic reduction in head injuries (who the hell would want to take a head shot?) Reduce the size of shoulder pads, or eliminate them. Wait! Isn't there a football-like contact sport like that around here?

BTW: I like that "vaginalized society" and "pussy soccer" analogy!

Concussions are serious & life threatening. They should be taken seriously.

Lots of head injuries in soccer too. Alpha is doing what my dad did, whacking me upside the head half a dozen times a day to create a callus around the brain. Best way to avoid head injuries. it still hurts, but the brain is safe.

Actually there is another side to this argument that is not being discussed. Given that I am an Independent and not some slimy republican or weak liberal - I will elaborate. The cost is literal, as in $$$$$. I love football and can't stand the hormonal sport of soccer, but what is the true cost to society in medical bills and long term care for a dementia patient. Kids won't see the effects of concussions until they are in their late forties to fifties and then memory loss, dementia, anger issues will surface. Who pays for it? Yes you guessed right Einstein. The tax payers will and caring for a dementia patient is not inexpensive (plus the disease state simply sucks and totally drains care givers). Who is right or wrong in this argument? Heck if I know, but $$$$ is an issue that should not be overlooked. :?:

When you said money I thought you meant this.

Helmet decision threatens kids' football program

One day, 11-year-old Kyle Torgerson of Great Falls hopes to play for the Seattle SeaHawks, but for now, he's just happy playing football with his younger brother Levi, and playing with his team in the Boys and Girls Club Football Program.

Since the program started in late 1990's, league participation has steadily increased.

T.J. IronBear, sports director for the club, noted, "Each year we've had almost over 300 kids per year. Last year was our highest enrollment. We had 334 and that's not including Havre."

But the league's upcoming season could be in jeopardy; Ironbear said that due to a decision from the National Athletic Reconditioners Association, "Any helmets that are over 10 years old, can no longer be refurbished."

That decision affects nearly all of the helmets used in the Cascade County Boys and Girls Club League.

Already the Boys and Girls Club has replaced about 70 of the old helmets, but it'll cost about $30,000 to completely replace its equipment with newer, safer models.

IronBear said, "Our hands are out right now, really, not begging but asking. We're going to have a season because we trust the community to help us."

If the club can't reach it's fundraising goal, Ironbear says the league may see drastic cuts to the number of players and even the number of teams.

The club is accepting donations on site during normal business hours and IronBear says there will be plenty of fundraisers coming up that are open to community participation.

Actually, my niece-one of the top freshman soccer players in Wisconsin-was just ruled ineligible (by her parents and her soccer league)to not play soccer. She lost total consciousness twice in one year. Her life is more important than a stupid sport! She's brilliant and wants to be a chemical engineer!

If my son had 2+ concussions playing football I would strongly recommend that he gave it up. Football is over for most pros by 30 and for virtually all by 35. They have another 30-40 years to live the rest of their lives and nobody wants to spend those years punch drunk in diapers in a nursing home.

Question for you, and a little off topic, maybe we have some posters with medical knowledge that can answer this, here it goes.

Of the current head trauma, concussion, brain, and migraine treatments out there, what are some of the more common treatment with some solid results? Are there any kind of rehab exercises, like there are with muscles? what kind of products, other than pain killers, aspirins, etc are out there, that help?

I have a theory that a lot of the problems are caused from the physical pounding causes the brain cells to age a lot faster. In turn not allowing your head, brain, nerves etc to have the necessary cells to fight against the symptoms. It sounds to me ,many of these ex players have similar issues of natural aging causes, but in most cases, it speeds up the process for physical and mental aging on the brain, nerves, bones, etc.

If there were a product to help maintain the necessary cells/chemistry to fight against it, could it help minimize the outcomes we are seeing over the last few decades? I would think something like this is very possible. How much of brain/head problems are caused from aging (dementia, and alzheimers are good examples with age)?

I don't expect anything, or anyone to prevent these kinds of things. I believe there are things that can be done to at the very least help slow down the drastic impact on their brains.

I would love to hear from some people with some medical background on these kind of things.

mtgrizrule - I've done multiple research papers for abnormal, developmental, and cognitive psychology classes on concussions(pcs) and traumatic brain injuries. If you would like some of what I've found/put together pm me. I'm not posting it due to the nature of trolls and their ignorance in the face of valid evidence. This topic is near and dear to me, I received a tbi thanks to a mortar and my younger brother has suffered multiple concussions from football. I get frequent migraines that are no longer treatable by over the counter or prescription meds. It's now a trip to the ER for treatment which generally consists of toradol, phenergan, some type of steroids, and some type of opiod (most recently dilaudid), all through an IV.

I don't think the problem is with the fact that these occur, it's the fact that players are being allowed to continue to play before they have recovered from a concussion. Guys sit out because of turf toe and ankle sprains, concussions are much more serious in nature. Those mentioning paying for long term dementia patients, make sure to include that any child in public school that suffers a concussion (which is a traumatic brain injury) qualifies for special education benefits. One study that cause concern any parent with a child is that recent studies sponsored by the NFL has shown that high school athletes participating in football and hockey, showed minor brain damage by the end of the season when they compared MRI scans done before and after the season. Not including the players that suffered diagnosed concussions, more than 50% showed the damage.

Thank you for educating all on this thread! My biggest fears are: 1) the competitive nature of our society and pushing our kids to succeed in sports, and looking at concussions as a minor temporary set back; 2) these young brains in children are still developing. Not only are the kids getting concussions, but according to the Mayo Clinic:

"Most sports-related head injuries, such as concussions — which temporarily interfere with the way the brain works — are mild and allow for complete recovery. Still, concussion in children can pose serious health risks, ranging from temporary memory deficits to fatal brain swelling. A repeat concussion that occurs soon after an initial concussion can be especially risky.

Head injuries take time to heal. Often, however, concussion in children goes unrecognized. Another blow to the head while the initial concussion is healing can occasionally result in fatal brain swelling — a condition known as second impact syndrome. A young athlete who sustains a concussion also is at risk of developing post-concussion syndrome, which is characterized by persistent concussion symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, irritability and depression. These symptoms can be particularly confusing for a child, as well as his or her family and teachers, if the child doesn't realize he or she has had a concussion.

To protect your child from head injuries, insist on appropriate and properly fitted protective equipment — such as a helmet — during sports and other activities. Also, make sure your child knows that even a mild bump or blow to the head can cause a concussion, and that concussions don't always involve a loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of a concussion may include:

Headache or a feeling of "pressure" in the head
Nausea or vomiting
Balance problems or dizziness
Double or blurry vision
Sensitivity to light or noise
Feeling sluggish, groggy or dazed
Difficulty paying attention
Memory problems
Confusion
Numbness or tingling

If you think your child has sustained a concussion, seek medical help immediately. Your child's doctor will determine how serious the concussion is and when it's safe for your child to return to sports or other activities.

Finally, I have five year old son that plays hockey (and he's damn good), but if he ever suffers a concussion, he'll be moving on to something else. I'll always love him more than vicariously living thru him in his-or my-favorite sport!

Its not about living vicariously through your kid, at least it isnt for me.

I will let my son participate in whatever it is that he loves to do and I will support him, I will also support him if he chooses not to participate in something.

Its about choice and freedom.

Its as simple as this message board if you dont like a poster dont read what he posts. If you dont like concussions dont play contact sports. Its a choice you should make personally......not a choice you should make for others.

do you believe in karma? your guy is gonna grow up to be a gay soccer player. he's never going to touch a drink, he'll hate guns, will vote democrat, respect women, and have season tickets to his nearest nba franchise. :thumb:

you mean WNBA?

If any of this happens I blame you and will ensure that my Griz beat your team for the next 2 decades.

Good luck to you, and I hope your son never suffers an injury; and that you don't have to go thru what the Steigers family and so many others have gone thru. I read, and will post-and you may think that your 14,000 plus posts mean more than my 160-but you sir, are wrong. You can throw your stupid f*cking machismo all over the place, but in the end, no child should be put it in a situation where they might be debilitated for the rest of their life. I guess that's your choice.
