It made for an interesting weekend, with five ranked FCS team losing to FBS opponents. Add in three ranked teams that lost to other ranked FCS teams, and … “it’s complicated.”
#1 North Dakota State (3-0) [1]
#2 James Madison (2-1) [2]
#3 South Dakota State (2-1) [3]
#4 UC Davis (2-1) [5]
#5 Weber State (1-2) [6]
#6 Towson (3-0) [8]
#7 Kennesaw State (2-1) [9]
#8 Montana State (2-1) [10]
#9 EWU (1-2) [4]
#10 Northern Iowa (1-1) [11]
#11 Nicholls (1-1) [12]
#12 Maine (1-2) [7]
#13 Illinois State (2-1) [13]
#14 Central Arkansas (3-0) [14]
#15 NC A&T (2-1) [15]
#16 Furman (1-2) [16]
#17 Jacksonville State (2-1) [17]
#18 Montana (2-1) [20]
#19 SE Missouri State (1-2) [19]
#20 Villanova (3-0) [22]
#21 Elon (2-1) [25]
#22 Delaware (2-1) [18]
#23 SE Louisiana (1-1) [23]
#24 Indiana State (1-2) NR
#25 Stony Brook (2-1) NR
NR Wofford (0-2) [21]
NR SHSU (1-2) [24]
In the top-10, the EWU loss was on the road, to a ranked opponent, and the final score was fairly close. I think the Eags have a decent chance to stay in the top-10. But with the EWU loss and the close game Weber State played at Nevada, I’m expecting the Wildcats to nudge up.
I expect the pollsters to punish Maine at bit more because (1) they were at home and (2) they got pummeled by over three touchdowns. Actually, it would not surprise me to see Maine drop a bit more.
Furman played Virginia Tech tough, actually leading at the half. The pollsters may be impressed enough to even nudge them up one. On the other hand, Jacksonville State’s “upset” of EWU could earn them a small bump compared to my guess.
With Delaware losing rather badly at home (admittedly to the top FCS team), I figured they will drop at least four or five spots. That left a gap to allow the Griz to move up at least one. However, SEMO got pummeled by FBS Missouri, whereas the Griz beat the spread against ranked FBS Oregon. Hence, a move up to #18. Might the Griz move up more? Not out of the question, but I think unlikely … it was still a loss.
When you’re sitting below #20 and lose to an unranked opponent (at home or away), you usually get hammered out of the top-25. So I see Wofford and Sam Houston State gone. Replaced them with Indiana State and Stony Brook, the two top vote-getters below #25 last week that won. (Princeton did not play.)
