Montana State University is much better positioned to join an FCS conference than Montana. It has twice as many students and an annual budget that's $100 million more than what UM could justify. It would have to add sports, but MSU is in a good position to do it.

The Griz are the little brother likely to be left behind in this scenario. Not only that, but the Regents gave up on parity between these universities a decade ago. Last I looked MSU had more students enrolled in liberals arts programs than UM. No Regent is looking for balance between these two schools.
