Faces on Montana football Mt Rushmore?

Biermann, Crebo, Petek, and Huntsberger.

Or Tim Hauck, Crebo, Petek, and Huntsberger.

That's 5 or 6 league Defensive MVP's right there. Hauck and Huntsberger each won it twice.

Yup. I still think the greatest debate I have is between Douglass and Wells. I give the nod to Douglass every time even though I have a Wells jersey and he was the lead receiver for the 95 'ship.
Douglass is far and away the best receiver ever at UM.

I was just pointing out that Mariani at best is a distant third

I hate agreeing with Alpha, makes me have to take a shower afterwards.

Joe Douglass > Marc Mariani

Marc in 2009 with 15 games to his credit edged out what Douglass did in 1996 by 10 yards. The difference? Douglass's numbers only counted for the regular season, his 1469 receiving came in the regular season only (11 games), while Marc's 1479 came in the regular and post-season.

Mike Erhardt and Raul Pacheco don't get a lot of love but I'd put them right up there behind Douglass/Wells/Mariani.

Watkins, Farris and Molden were no slouches either.
mariani is better than douglass. mariani plays in the n.f.l., douglass never did. douglass played in a pass first offense and got way more chances to catch passes and gain yards than mariani in haucks run first offense. mariani was also a better return man.

Douglass split catches his junior year with the 2nd best receiver in Griz history. Mariani had the show to himself.

Mariani benefited greatly from Reynolds and the play action. Everyone knew Dickenson and Ah Yat were going to throw and they still couldn't guard Douglass.

Agree, Huntsberger > Colt

Douglass has a playoff record that stands today. Most receptions in one postseason with 41.
If we count Douglass' playoff yards as we do Mariani's, Douglass has 1,966 in '96. Along with a single season record 21 td's (3 of which came in the postseason).

Douglass was recruited to Oregon St as a running back. He wasn't a WR at the time.

mariani usually had to run deeper routes and didn't have the the second best q.b. in school history brian ah yat to throw to him two year in a row - chemisty. instead he had to switch game managers selle and bergquist from one year to the next - breaking in new qbs.

Douglass had to transition between QBs as well. Dickenson in '95 and Ah Yat in '96. Do you have any facts to back up the statement that Mariani had to run deeper routes?

getgrizzy- Did you ever see Douglass?

I'm thinking no.
haha. yes, i've seen him play. i actually think joe is the better receiver of the two, but wanted to play devil's advocate with it for awhile. joe actually did quite well in n.f.l. europe and on an arena league team in las vegas.

I appreciate and recognize a number of points you made. No doubt Douglass played in the more pass-happy system, but I still think he was more dangerous with the ball in his hands.

Mariani thrived with the break away speed, hence the better returner. Honestly, Mariani always seemed faster in returns than after a catch, like he was afraid he was going to get hit harder and had some extra adrenaline.

Just think of all the Grizzlies to play in the NFL and some of those players have even made the Pro-Bowl, we are such lucky fans to have so many great players, maybe we could do a Mount Rushmore with smaller heads and go with like 10 players, that might be more fair. Go backwards from last season and then take your pick. Trumaine Johnson 4th round NFL pick probably the best corner to ever come out of Missoula, Caleb McSurdy, BSC Defensive player of the year and drafted by the Cowboys, not sure if Jimmy Wilson was a great before he had to leave the team, I did not watch that closely back then, but he was a starter almost all season for Miami this year. Then there were 2 of the best offensive players in school history with Mariani and Chase Reynolds, Shann Schillinger was not as good at U of M as Colt Anderson, but he is still an NFL player. Then you have Colt who has impressed many in the NFL and he was also one of the all time defensive greats in college. These are all just players from the last 4 seasons of Griz football. I for one am very thankful that I got the chance to see all these guys play for the Grizzlies, there is no way to pick a Mount Rushmore of Griz football.

I find it odd that people vote for colt but not the better secondary player in the same era of trumaine... Seems quite odd. I mean... Montana hasn't had as good of a football player as trumaine in the lasts 8 or 9 years. I wouldn't put him on Rushmore but to nominate colt and not trumaine seems odd
