EWU stadium expansion

Zirg said:
Unless they remove the track, it will always look and feel like a high school facility. Wash-Griz rocks because the fans are on top of the field. I have never seen statistics concerning how close the stands are to the playing field, but Wash-Griz has to be #1. Any Stadium with a track puts the fans so far away from the field, it is not intimidating.
End zone and sideline to fans is 6 yards. From the players area to fans is 7 yards. according to google earth.

Does anyone really believe that ESPN gameday will be in Cheney on week 10?

That would be absolutely infuriating and also damaging to the FCS brand.

Sadly though, it would be a more than fair representation of the FCS brand.

I've not been to EWU for a game, but the situation looks similar to UNC, where I've gone several times. It has a track and stands with insufficient elevation to see over the sidelines. Even from the 50 as high as you can get it's a miserable place to watch the game. But the beer in the concession that you can take to your seat makes it all good.

ESPN Gameday is usually done in venues like Michigan, Alabama or some other gigantic place. When they do an FCS it is seen by the viewing audience as something less. The facilities at Delaware, James Madison or even Montana is not going to be seen as anything different than what Eastern has. It's just good exposure for the conference. Nobody in the BSC has ever been featured on gameday before and probably wont again. I'm hoping it happens.

Agreed. Nobody from Alabama is going to drool looking at WA-Griz 😂 or any venue. It’s good for the BSC. Hope we can put up some points and have a good show for the viewers. Keep them coming back. Maybe Cat/Griz in the future.

I feel like the entire town of Cheney would qualify as being "a nearby field"

I feel your feeling. But, I swear I remember hearing something about some dude who proposed a new stadium on his land (or something) a few years ago. I'm 73% sure it wasn't a dream. Can any EWU fan help us out here? Did this get pitched?

I think it was more along the lines of the guy saying he'd offer up his land to EWU to build a new stadium, if that's the direction EWU wanted to go.

What's weird is that in the mid-2010s, EWU was seeing great attendance for a non UM or MSU game - like over 7k for teams like NAU and UNC. Can't speak to why things suddenly took a hit - maybe COVID related this year? It's not like the team's performance has dropped off - heck they're off to one of their best starts in D-1 history.

The current stadium "expansion" is more of a remodel; EWU isn't going to actually expand seating. But, the new stadium does appear to be planned with an expansion in mind. So maybe a more modern venue will add some buzz to the community to go out and see a winning team.

And as much as it would pain me to say this... Maybe EWU should actually consider a dome. Spokane isn't much of a sports town, and god knows that rainy weather is going to keep a lot of people away. So if a dome is the answer to get butts in the seats... then maybe it should be a serious option.

One challenge facing EWU is that per Washington state law, state funds can't be used to build or remodel the stadium. So, all funding basically has to come from private donors.

Thanks, dood. I remember the drawings being kind of rudimentary, so that makes sense. Fella was just like, “Here’s what we could do.” Dome could be cool in Cheney.

Why attend a game at Nottingham if it's so "miserable" (your words)? I get it, spend time with Marquis, but maybe in Estes Park, Boulder, or Fort Collins? If you want beer, there's plenty of breweries in those towns. Is it just so you can come back and bitch more about your "miserable" time in Greeley? Is it just so you can complain about our lame campus and stadium? You, Kem are way too cool to step on Greeley soil. UNC and especially Greeley itself does NOT deserve your presence. The school and city are not worthy. Of all the things and events that people struggle with in life, such as poverty, divorce, addiction, you continue to bitch all the time about your miserable experiences in such places like Greeley.

Seriously, there are lots of better things to do in Colorado than to go to a UNC game. Why not go hang out with your son in a town or city in Colorado that's more your liking. Does he still live in Fort Collins? Maybe the Rams have a game at Canvas? Catch a game and then maybe hangout with the hipsters in Old Town. It seems they're more your type of people; either that or stop bitching about Greeley and UNC for once in your life...PLEASE.

Geezus, sensitive much? Was he bitching or stating his opinion, which to be fair is pretty damn accurate.

As for attending games in greeley, perhaps he just feels his reactions aren't what they used to be and he wants to log some practice time ducking and weaving airborne clipboards.

Do the Montana Grizzlies (for whom he played) play games in those other places, or is it just Greeley? Could be why he goes. Just a thought.

I’m so glad you didn’t take that bet with him. There is a 66.6% chance I would have received one of your severed pinky toes in the mail wrapped in a ransom note.

Too true. Bsb has always been entertainingly irritating. Sort of like having “Cops” on in the background while your GF wants to have a serious conversation. You desperately want to watch to see how many cops it takes to wrestle down the big fat Floridian wearing the wife beater outside the single wide, but it’s distracting you from what you need to be doing and you kind of wish it would just go away.

But lately it’s different; I’ve become somewhat alarmed and concerned about his mental well being. Perhaps one too many clipboard shots to the temple region?

Holy.

If I were a NCU fan, I’d be FAR more concerned about our disgusting cheap play on the field to compensate for the fact that we can’t win games, and our coaches and “leaders” fighting with fans and throwing objects at them, thus embarrassing our program even more than thought possible; than I would a fan on a message board critiquing where you play those lopsided, dirty played games.

He complimented that you have beer! What else do you want?!

I mean it makes sense having the top two BSC teams go at it on national TV. Top D vs top O. Should be a ton of fun hopefully it brings the EWU fans out of the woodworks.

The teams are not the issue. The venue is the issue and it would be a horrible branding experience for the FCS. Including that red turf. People already view the FCS as a minor league division and showing a red turf at a shitty high school stadium would not be good for anyone. Regardless of both teams being very good.

I actually do just what you suggest, hang out with the son in Ft. Collins before and after the game and we do the spots in Old Town. I go to the game because for me it's a two-fer, catch up with the son and take in a Griz road game. Pity that my description of the facility struck such a nerve, but it is what it is. Maybe you missed the last sentence where I indicated there was virtue that made it all good.

That said, I won't make it this week; we had a funeral in Denver the week before last which had to substitute for the Griz game. The trips down I-25 through eastern WY can be handled no more than annually. Unlike Nottingham, the Ft. Logan cemetery in Denver is truly amazing. It's huge and the full military funeral was special.

Agreed. Nobody from Alabama is going to drool looking at WA-Griz 😂 or any venue. It’s good for the BSC. Hope we can put up some points and have a good show for the viewers. Keep them coming back. Maybe Cat/Griz in the future.

I’ve had a different experience down here in Texas. My work is full of UT, A&M & Tech grads (including a couple of guys who played P5 football). My office is fully decked out with Griz gear EVERYWHERE, including a framed pic of the stadium (full) with an American flag covering the entire field. Nearly everyone in the office watched the NDSU game in ‘15. When the Griz are on TV (like the EWU game) my phone blows UP with people in Texas texting me. Literally once a week someone walks into my office, looks at the aforementioned picture, and says “man, I’ve got to get to a game in that stadium some day.” That’s a true story. In fact, I made one of their years this year as I took one of them to the Sac State game. I’m telling you, the scenery and a full, rocking stadium leaves an impression on people, I don’t care what level of football it is.

Oh, and I agree with Kem….Directional Colorado’s stadium is a joke. But the beer makes up for it.

I don’t disagree with anything you said, it’s just hard for them to pick a game for the FCS, to your point they know it’s a balance. Which I think is BS. The top 5-6 FCS teams could MOP the floor with some FBS teams. But I get it. Maybe if the Griz win out we will get our wish for CGD at the BOTW. Would be a great experience for the students/ athletes.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Fort Logan is really beautiful. My grandfather (Army) and grandmother (Navy) are buried there.

Nottingham isn't horrible, the school has put in already millions in to upgrades and will eventually get more done (new turf in this year), but I'm sorry it's not up to your standards (besides the beer I guess). You still bitch too much.
