Agreed. And teaching or not I believe he's still collecting a salary for a little bit, correct? He's giving back and helping the UM out in a field he's proven he's good at. Don't see the harm in that.

On what do you base that judgement? Engstrom was not a particularly distinguished researcher and teacher in the field of chemistry. The field moves very rapidly and his expertise is dated. There is also a serious question whether the UM Chemistry Dept. needed another faculty member as enrollments are crashing. Not to mention the fluff of the course he will be teaching.... Bottom line is he has tenure and isn't leaving; not sure how good that is for an overstaffed UM.BWahlberg said:Sam A. Blitz said:Engstrom is a good add to the faculty of the Chem department. I heard he has kept up to date with professional on-line courses:

To my point, and every university chemistry professor has a resume with long lists. It's about the quality of items on the list that are of relevance. I was in the field for 40 years and never heard of Engstrom until he came to UM as Provost.PlayerRep said:Montanan said:How long has it been since he's been an instructor in a classroom? From the bio Brint linked, it looks like Engstrom last taught chemistry in in 1995 and last published on chemistry in 1999.
1999 paper went to J Chem Ed -- not bad, really. But also not original chemical research. Does not matter ... 18 years is an eon in virtually any scientific discipline, including chemistry. Judging from the job titles, he has been engaged in administrative work since at least 2001. Well ... 16 years is also an eon in chemistry. (My Ph.D. is in chemistry, BTW, so I know at least that much.)PlayerRep said:From the bio Brint linked, it looks like Engstrom last taught chemistry in in 1995 and last published on chemistry in 1999.Montanan said:How long has it been since he's been an instructor in a classroom? Actually UM provides as good an undergraduate program in chemistry as any. While not having the graduate research resources of a Stanford, Harvard or UCLA, UM focuses on undergraduates, which the big guys don't. The faculties at the big schools focus on their research and publishing with the top people never teaching undergraduate courses. The UM faculty's mission is the education of undergraduates. Also they can do it better not being beholden to a chemical engineering department like State.garizzalies said:But I would also not send my kid to UM for chemestry in the first place, unless it was a required class for a bio-related degree.
Same here, but it could depend upon his specialty, I suppose. Hard to be sure, but it looks like he did a lot of work in analytical/measurement chemistry. I worked in the instrumental measurement field and my wife (MS, chemistry) ran an analytical lab. Never heard of anyone named Engstrom. I suppose I could dig out some of his old papers, but it's not really worth the effort.kemajic said:To my point, and every university chemistry professor has a resume with long lists.
