It's a high risk, high reward defense at best. The edges seem vulnerable at times. Last year it didn't rear its ugly head like it has this year. It seems like an amoeba defense, which probably doesn't make any sense.

It does to any of us old enough to be fans of Tark the Shark! But I don't think it really translates. Containment responsibilities are not a particular player rather they are a particular player which changes based pre-snap alignment, blitz package, coverage package, and of course "the enemy gets a vote" so what the offense is showing/doing pre-snap.
Tark's teams always pressed and got lots of turnovers... I'd agree on the comparison if we ever got any consistent pressure on the passer but that hasn't really been the case this year...
Have you watched the Cats play this season? There are more than three threats to "worry about". Tommy, Scottie, Adam, Julius, Rohan, Taco, Junior, Ty, Ryan, Ryan.....
But I agree - Cats will just try to run it down your throats and if that doesn't work then you'll see if the passing game is any good.
Every team has more than three threats to worry about. A) they're not all on the field at the same time and B) there's only one football.
Yes I have watched the cats play this season. They are a very good team. Lots of great players and well coached. It will all come full circle on Saturday.
If we can force you guys to pass more than 25 times, I think we'll have a good shot.
Tommy has passed 25 or more times twice this season, against UNM and last weekend against Davis.
If he has another 7/12 type game, it means you're running all over us, and it won't be close.
Michael, Randy, Jackie, Marlon, Frito, Geranium, ......Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, and Mike. Using a once a year rivals player's first names on our fan page is weird. Other than Cat trolls who live on this site. I guarantee there are not four people outside of Bozeman who could tell you anybody on the Cats except Mellot.

Wouldn't over pursuit actually work to set the edge and turn ball carriers back inside to where the help is?

You’re mistaking overpursuit for leverage. If you are holding the edge and contain and leveraging things back inside to your defensive numbers that would be by design. If you are contain and jump down inside and lose that edge you’ve just f’ed up bad.
There’s been a lot of guys trying to do too much and getting caught up in blocks at the line of scrimmage. Go rewatch the PSU game and you will see guys like Tirrell or Gradney jumping down and either getting Swallowed up by a block, the wash, or missing the ball carrier all together. A perfect example of a young player is Loud on the 4th and 2 who assumed the run was bouncing outside to the East as there was a kickout block on the end rushing upfield. He ran right by the ball carrier who walked into the end zone untouched just off of the right side of the PSU line. We cannot get caught flat footed or the opposite bailing where we anticipate things to go.
To their credit the defense is tackling much better than early to mid-season.
