Draining the lifeblood of the department (Move-up thread)

There are a lot of NDSU diehards not going to frisco this year, there's literally hundreds of extra tickets, it's time for the Elite in the Fcs to follow Georgia So & App st.

I'm sorry but it's seems like. The d2 in 90's all over again

Even if this is true, and I have my doubts, are you saying that many Bison fans would rather have their season end in November, as it did for Geo So and App St? That these Bison fans would rather watch other teams play on tv during the bowl season, than to have followed their team through playoffs and presumably watch the championship game on tv? Are you saying that it the Bison were in FBS, it would be more exciting for them to go a single meaningless bowl game than to follow their team through the playoffs or go to Frisco?

Geo So won 9 games this year. Great. They beat Savannah State, South Alabama, App St, N. Mex. St, Idaho, Geo St, Troy, Texas St and UL-Monroe. Lost to Navy 19-52.

App St beat Campbell St, Troy, Geo St, UL-Monroe, Ark. St., UL-Lafayette and Idaho.

Do those schedules excite you? Have at it.

How many FCS teams that moved up in the past 25 years played in any bowl game? 5 or so, if that?

Lost to (8-5) NC State 24-23; lost to (11-3) GA Tech 42-38. Went 8-0 to win their conf. in their first year. As always, never give the complete picture. You can't resist selecting data to support your agenda. Do you think GSA fans were not excited to take both NC State and particularly GA Tech to the wire and go undefeated in conf.? Go ahead; claim they would be more excited to play scholarshipless San Diego in small college playoffs.

Now that's pretty funny. You're saying the highlight of Geo So's season were its losses, and wins in the worst FCS conference? Winning in a meaningless and joke of a conference, with no post-season games, and having its season done in November, is not very exciting to me. Nor is losing games. 5 home games, against Savannah St, App St, Idaho, Troy and UL Monroe. Geo So fans were so excited about their team's success in the Sunbelt that attendance dropped to 18,000 and 16,000 in those last 2 home games. Yup, Geo So fans must have really been excited about that conference.

Beating the heck of the Cats, and having 2 playoff games, was alot of fun for me. Too bad you are unable to enjoy that. Too bad you just long for the days of playing Idaho.

You know, for most fans who desire to move up, it's not an "either/or" situation. I enjoy the playoffs. I would also enjoy a schedule playing teams in the MWC every weekend.

It ain't rocket science.

NDSU & Montana on January 12th should have both presidents flying to Salt Lake City to mountain west offices and telling them we'd like an invite we can help your conference.

If they complain about tv you say "we can provide statewide programming plus fox sports north or northwest"

If they complain about stadium attendances you say "would you rather have 22,000 fans in a 38,000 stadium or packed houses like NDSU/Montana get with great atmospheres"

We are the ONLY 2 teams with the fanbase to do it. (Problem is having 2 anchors holding us down and stealing half the state funded money grrr)

I agree to a certain degree Bison. The biggest problem is that with the TV contracts ESPN puts you on TV on a Wednesday or Thursday. People in Missoula are largely apathetic when it comes to attending games. Montana draws from around the state. Put the Griz on TV for a Wednesday night game and you may get 10,000 if you are lucky. Then you look just as bad as those other conference.

Would you also enjoy losing, not playing the Bobcats (or at least playing them less), never going to the playoffs, either not have a post-season game or having one in a place like Boise, having fewer home games, playing weekday games, having higher ticket prices, experiencing declining attendance, having far fewer MT kids on the roster, etc.?

A couple things.

One the MWC isn't headquartered in Salt Lake City, it is Colorado Springs. NDSU has virtually no chance of being invited unless the landscape of college football drasitically changes.

Not sure what so many of you have against the MWC. Utah State fans are thrilled to be in the Mountain West. Just being in that league has done us alot of good. I can't think of anything negative about being in the MWC. Ask Wyoming, USU, fans (or fans of any other MWC school) if they would trade places with anyone in FCS or the Big Sky. Good luck finding ANYONE that would.

Being in the MWC has been a HUGE positve for Utah State and I can't think of why it wouldn't be for UM as well. It may not matter because I think the next time the MWC expands it will be in Texas.

Seeing the schedules of Big Sky schools and Mountain West schools for me there is NO DOUBT about which one I would rather see and buy tickets.

And the love for the FCS playoffs continues to escape me, but that is just me. I would rather have the "who gives crap" Bowl against a school I had heard of before they season started.

It is more of a culture thing Navy. The playoffs have produced amazing memories and success for Griz fans over the years. It is a truly an unbelievable environment, especially when the semi-finals were in Missoula. Great atmosphere! People have experienced those games and have a hard time seeing a move up being better. Montana will be on the road more and have a difficult time getting top tier teams to Missoula anyway. Financially it would not make a lot of sense unless the TV money was really good to make up the difference in the money needed to add sports, increase coaches salaries, recruiting budgets etc.

Thanks, putter for the well though out reply. I guess I left town before that culture started and maybe for that reason I don't get it.

It pretty much comes down to people living in the past that have a hard time letting go! Some people have a hard time when it come to change, as it shows on this board...

I think that Utah State is the school that UM should look at when considering a move up rather than Boise State. They are located in a smaller town with the metro areas in Utah is dominated by Utah and BYU. They do not have a stadium that is larger than UM and they compete. More than compete, they win and are now a powerhouse in the MWC. They are one of the last to get an invite as other conference schools could see that they had potential.

I don't think that many schools in the MWC think that Idaho nor NMSU have much potential and that is the reason that they are not in the MWC now. Texas may look sexy but they have loyal fan bases for existing programs and building a new base is tough. Ask any school that is not named Ohio State U. in the state of Ohio and they will explain it. Ohio has 8 other FBS programs and none have a fan base.

UM has a fan base and that is the most difficult thing to put together. That is the strength of any program. Also an insane desire to put a winner on the field goes a long way as those without a rabid fan base are the ones that lose more often than not. UM fans would demand a winner and that is the reason that they would be successful.

About the weekday games: If ESPN or ABC for that matter want you to play on a weeknight, they have to pony up the cash to make it worth it to the AD. They will not be giving money unless it is a game that they can sell nationally. The more games on national TV, the more students want to attend the university, both athletes and non-athletes. Bring in a udub on Thursday night and see if the place is half empty. Do you have scalper laws in Montana?

MWC teams DONT play on Wed or Thursday nights. stop with that myth.

People say "no TV in NDSU or Montana region"
that's hogwash too, I guarantee the SHARE is much higher in these area's than Ft collins, Florida, etc. EVERYONE watches NDSU & Montana when they are on TV in those 2 states, so you are actually getting a better share of the audience and their full advertising attention!

Not really a myth when this happens:

Tuesday, Oct 26, 2010 - Boise State vs LA Tech
Thursday, Aug 28, 2014 - Boise State vs Ole Miss, ESPN
Thursday, Aug 28, 2014 - San Jose State vs North Dakota

Wyoming might not play on Wednesday or Thursday nights, but other schools do, albeit rarely.

Friday night games are also a problem for people who have to drive multiple hours to get to Missoula.

Looking at your posts, it appears that the only thing you can "guarantee" us is that much of what you post is incorrect.

I don't think many people have negatives views of the MW or its benefits. It's more that some UM fans wouldn't be excited about moving up to anywhere, including the MW; losing in the MW wouldn't be fun for some UM fans; and playing MW teams wouldn't be overly exciting for some UM fans.

You have never experienced the FCS playoffs and having you team in them. If your team is in the playoffs, they are very exciting, tons of fun, and the best part of FCS football, in my view.

One question. Even without your team in the FBS playoffs, are the FBS playoffs catching your attention or exciting, or are they ho-hum for you?

The way things seem to be headed, there will be a playoff system for the MWC and other Div 1 "mid-major" football conferences not a part of the Big 5 down the road. I'd like UM to have a piece of that when it happens.
