Does UM's declining enrollment impact athletic budget?

Its also the only Montana School in the USNWR top 200. But you are dead on in your assesment. Grad school enrollement is down, and that is concerning, all most as concerning as the lack of retention at MSU. We are spending a lot of good money for nothing. Its time to start limiting enrollment at both schools.

Top 200 doesn't mean anything if you have a generic BA degree. Top 100, maybe an HR lackey sorting through resumes cares enough to get you into at least a phone interview.

True but recruiting wise it doesn't hurt to be on the "list" Its sort of like Consumer Report worthless but necessary

It's a plus, definitely, at a time where UM desperately needs one. Let's see how UM recruiters do this year. Bozo has almost 4000 more students now than UM. That's not good.

I think the present University President has alienated a lot of people and is killing the Golden Goose of UM Football. Whether intentional or not, I don't presume to know but UM is cutting their budget, facing a shrinking enrollment while the economy is generally pretty good. His handling of issues that should never have been exaggerated to the extent they were will not be forgotten by many grads.

The sad fact is that a liberal arts degree is largely a waste of money these days. UM needs to redefine itself as primarily a business school, since Bozo has locked up the technology/engineering/science/accounting categories in Montana. Montana Tech also serves a valuable role, too, especially with the Bakken Boom. Too bad most of the voters in Missoula are anti-Bakken, and it has infected the campus as well.

This is the dumbest post you've ever made.

Which is a little like saying that today is the hottest day ever in Phoenix.

Its not good in number of ways. They aren't retaining those students, they don't have adequete facilities, and the quality of lower division classes is rapidly dropping. Tts going to take a lot of $$$$ to get things up to snuff. UM faced a similar crisis not so long ago.

The whole thing is cyclical. 5 years ago UM was kicking MSU's ass in enrollment. 5 years before that, MSU was kicking UM's ass. 5 years before that, UM kicking MSU's ass. 5 years before that.....

That's just the way it works.

well that explains it. Nothing to see here then, I guess

What is UM's retention rate ?

UM = 74.8%
MSU = 67.6%
Do you have a link? This says msu has a 76% retention rate. http://www.montana.edu/news/15100/msu-sets-new-enrollment-record-with-15-421-students" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What you stated is not accurate. And note that MSU has set an enrollment record 8 of the past 9 years.

Get used to it. MSU is the new UM. They've gone global. Better alums, better students, and better football. Becoming irrelevant happens sometimes... The good news is that you still have Delaney and likely will for the foreseeable future.

False, according to USNWR

MSU is at 75% in this year's rankings.

I think you can do a lot better than this. Take 2, go!

By EWagon troll standards, I've seen worse.

Seems that when tnt posted that facts don't matter on egriz she was talking about her own bogus statements.

How about acting like you WANT new students? My daughter's campus tour last fall was poorly organized and pathetic in almost every way. Beautiful campus though, I'll have to admit.

Have heard this time and time again. MSU, Carroll, Tech, all have very nice orientations and make students feel like they're genuinely wanted on campus. UM's.... Not so much

No student reps, tour guides, not a faculty advisor in sight, no dorm room visits.

One presentation in the auditorium by Engstrom and they just turned us loose to walk around on our own.

Almost like the real world.

For what it is worth, most campuses and I expect at least half the population of the US is anti-Bakken. But, one thing I will say about the U of North Dakota, it has a medical school that is highly respected. I think Montana would be well served to begin looking into that possibility. The U of Montana offers (or did) great BA and BS degrees whose recipients move easily to and through graduate programs of the highest caliber. I can think of at least 8 U of M grads that breezed through Stanford, 2 at Princeton...and, like me, call my alma mater UM....sad to see that being downgraded, if it actually is. As for Montana Tech...show me any petroleum engineering school in the best North American colleges and you will find a Tech grad or know someone who is. Can't say that about MSU....
