Does This Inspire Confidence?

From the article "Get to Know Cole Grossman" from Grizzly Gameday in Friday's Missoulian:

Q: With recent struggles offensively for the team, how confident do you remain in the offense as a whole?

A: No Comment.

Thoughts?

This (I believe) came from Lucas Semb who also asked Flowers in the early week presser to talk on the offense struggles - and Bobby cut that off. I’d venture Cole (and the team) has their own insight and probably instructions to specifically not address questions like those to the media.

Semb is the new guy in the group and I have no problem with him asking them. Others that have been around a while probably knew the reply they’d get to a question like that and just don’t opt to ask it. I like that Semb is trying to get guys to open up more on stuff but I’d bet he’s going to keep getting the same replies.

Very little upside for players to engage with the media...vs the risk - especially with the Missoula media.

If he says yes, the fans will cry about how our offense sucks and be mad that he's happy with our offense. If he says he's not, that causes troubles with the team. His answer was the best one. Also BH doesn't want players getting coach questions. Come on.. yall bad fans try to turn everything into some dumbass conspiracy and just want to stir the pot.

There are a million noncommittal ways this question could’ve been answered like…

“We haven’t gotten the results we’ve wanted the last few weeks, but we’re putting in the work and going to turn this thing around.”

Why not just express some mild hope for improvement? To me, “no comment” leaves plenty of room for interpretation, which is the issue here.

He answered just like instructed. Not sure it means anymore or any less than that.

Look I get it. I’m just saying when you avoid a simple question, there is always going to be those that interpret it as having something to hide.

Or in this case, it has the appearance of if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

They are simple ways of answering questions like these without committing to anything or leaving room for interpretation.

How ironic! That's the same answer I give when my wife asks if I’ve been watching pornhub on our laptop again!

I think attaching the windshield wiper to the laptop screen probably gave you away. ;)

Semb seems to be one of the good ones so far. I like that he’s asking the questions that he has been asking. I know we are all still wary after 2012.

If its good for eGriz then its good for the world. Censorship is always the correct answer

He must be a Democrat, because he tries to cancel opinion which doesn't support his

Or he could be a game outcome denier.
When the score doesn't go your way just claim it was rigged

Burn. Hilarious response. Had to laugh at that one.

Is this the guy who asked the exact same question in front of BH, and got slapped (figuratively)? Then, is tiny brained enough to ask another player without BH present?

If so, not sure what his strategy is to be trusted?

I could be wrong on this.

He engages with fans on social media and many of his questions were the ones that we all were asking. What he did is good journalism. Pursuit of truth. I’m glad he asks uncomfortable questions. In that small way it keeps Bobby’s feet to the fire. As much as Hauck might chafe at reporters and uncomfortable questions, it is better than the softball stuff that a lot of others have been asking.

He’s also young and is trying to establish the expectation that his questions will be answered. Either by Hauck or by someone else that’s credible. Given his fan engagement and the articles he has written so far, I don’t think he has any agenda other than fact.

All is fair with the coaches. Questions to the players are different....

I also doubt he has an agenda. But, I have had countless lessons/instructions on dealing with the media, and in all of them - I was told to stay in my lane. I am sure the players get the same instructions. Again - they have no control over scheme, personnel decisions etc...

And, the fact that BH slapped him previously for the same question to a different player, leads me to believe this guy is still very much learning.

First, this is college football, not politics or governance. I see no pursuit of the truth in this. In a small market like this, what this does is cut off the access of the reporter. I don't think it keeps Hauck's feet to the fire at all. Over time, he just starts ignoring the reporter.

To his detriment. Ignoring questions creates an information vacuum. That’s when any narrative can get out of Hauck’s control. As much as it pains me, ignoring or stonewalling the Missoulian is how reporters like eGriz darling Gwen get space to twist any story into their own ends. It creates animosity where there doesn’t need to be.

Yes this is a small market and not government. Perhaps using “truth” was a poor turn of phrase. However, Semb SHOULD pursue things. He would be professionally negligent if he didn’t. He might be young and a more experienced reporter might have been less blunt and more politic in how he asked, but that he has the courage to ask harder things is a nice turn.

I like Lucas, he seems interested in making the most out of his job here and getting involved. However, not pursuing players subjective opinions on one’s teammates seems a far cry from professional negligence. We’re not talking about whistleblower status for the wrongdoings of a major corporation.

Careful, most whistleblowers are bad teammates.

Ok. I’ll concede the negligence part. I’m just saying that it wasn’t the dick move some are saying it is.

I don't think it was a dick move, but doing things like that are going to hurt his professional advancement in a small market like this. Some may not like that, but it's a fact.
