Depth chart going into spring

Does red shirt also work as a means of hiding extra guys in plain site? More than 104 folks on this list by my count.

I'm excited for Nguyen because I think he'll fit in to a pass-heavy offense really well.

I really don't know what to think of Nguyen. To be honest, I am swaying toward Alpha's outlook regarding him. Just like his brother, I just have less trust and confidence in him. With that said, my concerns are more of him as a returner than as a HB. I am more open to him being part of "HB by committee". Maybe he will prove to be a feature HB. I don't want to see him doing any returns. I just don't see as much upside and potential in Nguyen as I do with the other HB's.
I honestly don't see him having the size, consistency, and break away speed to see him as anything more than a long down/3rd down back. What makes some feel he has what it takes to be a feature back? His best skill set is making defenders miss. Beyond that, what does he do decisively well to separate himself from the other HB's?

If he does by some chance become the GRIZ feature HB, I will be more than a little concerned about the quality of our HB depth. I will gladly eat crow, if he proves me wrong. :thumb:

Love him or hate, think he's good or not, he fumbles too much or whatever, John Nyguen is the Griz' No. 1 running back going into spring ball. This thread was about the depth chart going into spring, and Nyguen is No. 1. That's a fact.

If Joey Counts had not been injured last season, he is the number 1 back going into this season. If Counts is a reliable pass catcher I could easily see him as the starter next season, we need a guy like Joey that can plow over people and make them think twice when they go to tackle him.

Hopefully all went well with the surgery/recovery and he's able to compete. :beef:

I see Counts doing extra workouts at the Rec all of the time. He is looking pretty healthy in there. Dude is a bowling bowl.

as the every down back, imo counts is the guy.....if he is healthy....

I like all of our RBs. I like them a lot more when the OL and TE position decides to block somebody. With improved blocking we expect to see in 2015, I think we will appreciate all our backs that much more.

My only issue with our backs, that are returning from 2014, is that none of them have true break-a-way speed. That is why I am excited about Jeremy Calhoun signing. Not sure when he'll (a sprinter) see the field, but when he does, I won't worry about him being caught from behind (too many times).

Favors has terrific speed, which is break away speed.

The Calhouns' track speeds are "good", but not breakaway. Would like to know Favors' to compare.

Jeremy Calhouns track profile for comparison. Calhoun's slightly faster.

Sorry, forgot we were comparing running backs.

Favors times are mediocre, definitely not break away speed. I bet not even top 10 on the team.

His bio at Hudl lists him with 4.4 40. If I remember right, other recruiting sites had him listed at 4.45. Either way, 4.4 to 4.5 speed is good. Also, I remember from his highlights him breaking away frequently. Maybe he maintains speed well in pads, or the competition in his highlights as a whole are not very fast. Unfortunately, HUDL removes the highlights apparently after a player is done with HS. Here is the you tube search results. I have not looked through all the videos, and won't. From what I did see though, he does seem to keep good speed while making his cuts.

Hey, I hear Marq Rogers has "break away" speed. Wonder if he can play RB?

Break away speed isn't necessary to be successful as a back, whatever defines "break away".. I think of guys like Van or Henderson. It's rare. We don't have a RB on the roster with that type of speed, especially not Favors - he didn't have a ton of speed in HS and has bulked up in his time here.

Nguyen is our best RB and will be the starter.

Breakaway speed isn't necessary when all the would be tacklers are pancaked to the turf - bring back DOLA!
