I don't understand this board: Engstrom was an "inbred" president. Engstrom fired an inbred coach & AD. Engstrom hired an inbred Coach Delaney, who most of you think is the best thing since sliced bread. Where the hell are you guys? I agree that the hiring process for the new UM pres. was cosmetic. But, you have to know Dennison knew precisely what he was doing when he hired Engstrom as provost. Engstrom is not an inbred; he's an outsider, with substantial accomplishments at USD. Otherwise, he would not have been brought in.
That he has done some things you guys don't like re: football, remember that a university pres. has more to do than supervise football and the athletic dept. And, don't forget: He's the boss of UM athletics, including football. But, i digress. This guy is capable of bringing in far more research dollars than any others that I'm sure Dennison considered in hiring a provost.
The question for you is, Do you want a president solely occupied with the football team, or a president who has the total welfare of UM in mind? You simply cannot equate the success of UM with the success of the football team. If you do, you're wagging the dog with the tail. I don't mean to make this an either/or discussion, but many of you do.
I'm not saying Engstrom doesn't care about UM intercollegiate competition. All I'm saying is that he's putting intercollegiate competition in its true light, which the football program, and guys like you, has seriously and dangerously skewed to the tail of the dog.
Inbreeding of UM administration and of the athletic dept. is moot, far as I'm concerned. In fact, I'll say that the tradition of hiring football coaches and ADs with long-time UM connections has been pretty damned well successful over the past 25 years. I really don't know why this has to be an issue, now. I'll bet even the Ohio States, Floridas, etc., do the same thing.
I'd say, in hiring a HC or an AD, that all things equal, hire the guy/gal that has previous experience w/ UM. Yes, the Cats hired Rob Ash, an outsider, and he has rebuilt that program. That program needed that. I do not believe an outside AD will solve any problems, altho if UM hires an outsider, I would not be opposed. I said, ALL THINGS EQUAL Do not put an inbred above an outsider if all things are NOT equal.
Nothing on this board was questioning JOD because he was inbred before he was fired. Everyone on this board was completely happy while JOD was running the show. Now, suddenly, the next AD should NOT be an inbred? What the hell does that have to do with anything?
All I'm saying is hire the best AD and HC, and if UM experience is preferable, then that should be a position announcement, to be fair to prospective applicants.
But, you guys have a serious problem: You approve of Coach Delaney, an inbred, but at the same time complain about hiring inbreds.
