Delaney announces his retirement

With the Grizzlies getting a new coach, the cats better batten down the hatches and prepare for what could be the bitter end of their football program. The cat's program continues to be adrift and rudderless without a true captain to give them a bearing. I'm sorry to any cat fans who are reading this. I wish I knew a way to buoy your spirits. Your program is about to run aground in the wake of the Grizzly program. I fully expect a new streak and to prove the first one wasn't a fluke. I guess the best you can do is put on your cleats and try to compete. Your program is about to capsize. If you don't believe me you are crazy in the head. Rest assured, the tide has not turned.

Big thanks to MD, awesome guy, super classy. And I like the way/time he announced it.
I've been very critical of the coaching on the field but I've always liked MD. Bitter-sweat. Kinda like when Jerry Garcia died. I always said, "I'll be Greatful when they're Dead" and then he died and I felt bad

Mick, thank you for what you have done. You brought stability to a program going through some rough stuff and did a wonderful job. The Griz were honored to have you as their coach. Congrats on retirement. Beat the Cats and a couple other teams, then go take a well deserved break!

He did a great job under extremely adverse conditions. He may not have satisfied all Griz Fans with his game day coaching, but he was the best coach in the last 30 years with regard to off field player incidents. He also was able to get good recruits despite the reputation of the Program and the University taking huge publicity hits. The players like him and he is a really good guy. This ship could have easily sunk with all the problems he had to deal with, but he kept it afloat and will pass the torch to the next coach in good standing for a rise back to the top vs. pulling it up from the bottom of the sea.

Great post, GT.

Congratulations and thank you, Mick!!

Ditto! :thumb:

Class act! Guy knows how to win and lose the right way. He was the right man for the job during all the turmoil. Good Luck to Mick.

Obviously, the UM gig is the yacht experience at our level. It's great that we weathered the perfect storm, and that the program is no longer covered with the barnacles that it might have been a few years back. I think we're a locks to hire a great coach who will have us back to the high water mark very soon.

Very well put, EG. I have complete confidence that the next guy will be the anchor we need to win another NC soon, like, preferably before the deadrise and start walking the streets.

What baseless blather...rose-colored glasses have become x-ray glasses. What's changed :?: Royce Engstrom, whose ill-considered decisions have left us where we are today, still rules the Main Hall roost while it's business as usual with the Regents. Has RE become any smarter or more open to rational decision making over the past two years? So, please explain the "complete confidence" or this "lock(s) to hire a great coach" you suggest we enjoy? Expediency rules! Meaning another convenient good-old-boy hire...Meh

That seems a bit overboard.

Will be double interesting to see how many of the members of this unbelievable recruiting class keep their verbals.
All recruits were already told Mick Did not plan to renew his contract.

Did UM tell every recruit on the radar or just the ones who signed?

Everyone who has been seriously recruited was told more info than most of this site knows. From inside sources this was handled very well, from what I hear everyone seemed on board.

Mick stepped into a cauldron at a time when this University was rocked with strife. He steps away with the ship righted and a bright future ahead. The fan base is ready to be re-energized and the time is right for a new coach. The Griz have a solid bunch of returning players and an outstanding recruiting class coming in and the addition of the Academic Center and the Washington Champions Center, combined with the best venue in all of the FCS, Washington-Grizzly Stadium, puts the University in a great position to attract a high-quality coach. My thanks go out to Mick and his family. Now let's go BEAT STATE! GO GRIZ! BEAT STATE!

With all do respect to Mick, the players that have verbalized to Montana or signed, are committing to a program, not Coach Mick. We have no gimmick like a red field or a feline name. We have tradition! Tradition that Mick and all the other coaches have built-including Mick's assistants. Of course Mick told the incoming players he'd be stepping down, but if any of those players choose to move on to another program, it will be because it's best for them, not because one person-who is part of the winningnest (not a word) FCS program in history.

Thanks Mick, for all of your dedication and commitment to Griz Nation! :thumb:
