Defending EWU?

Just was curious what everyone thinks is the best way for the Griz to defend EWU, Play zone and let them go underneath, Man on the outside with a linebacker spy and Safeties over the top and hope that the Dline can get to the QB, or do you blitz? Whatever the Griz do on defense they must tackle a heck of alot better than the did vs Eastern last season.

If I were the griz secondary I would randomly run in circles hoping for the best. :lol: :lol:

If Gregorak tries to play that old Paulsen style bend-but-don't-break defense, we will give up 50+ if shoota plays. If he plays, we need to put a spy on him on every play. He is by far the best player on the field, so he needs to be stopped from running like the Cal Poly QB did. If we allow him to gain over 100 yards on the ground, it will be a long day.

We need to run multiple defenses, and disguise our defense until just before the snap. Play both man and zone on the receivers, but disguise what we are doing. Gregorak has got to stop sending in defensive signals until just before the snap. Our defenders are often out of position because they did not get the defensive call from him in time. EWU often runs a hurry-up offense, and that will cause Gregorak problems in getting our defense set.

No. You are correct Big G. Have no spy on him and let him run rampant for 100 + yards. He is one of the best scramblers in the BSC - if not the best. You don't have to put a spy on him every play, but you sure as hell better shake it up. Using one defensive scheme is ridiculous. That is why they call it, "adjustments". The team that adjusts the best will win this game. Lots of variables - we don't even know if shoota will play. I am doubtful he will see the field. Not an easy injury to bounce back from, especially when you use your feet as much as he does. For those Eagles fans wondering - the answer is NO. Meth does not heal broken bones, so you are out of luck.

Gamboa has the speed to keep up with anyone to the edge and will most likely be keeping an eye on shoota. I would attempt to take Forte and Brown out of the mix and make them a passing team. Forte had quietly been one of the best running backs in the Big Sky and is a dangerous weapon for EWU. Oh, and someone might want to keep an eye on #10. :thumb:

Do I have to go back to football 101 with you guys? Obviously none of you have ever coached. I have, in high school. You don't use the same spy the entire game. That would be too easy for the EWU coaches to make adjustments for. You have different players spy him..... sometimes a LB, sometimes a D-lineman. I know, I know, there is no D-linemen capable of stopping him if they engage one-on-one. But they don't HAVE to stop him, just take away the open running lane, make him slow down and juke instead of hitting an open lane at full speed. That gives our other defenders time to make a play. Should be obvious to anyone who understands defending a great running QB. Every NFL team does it when they play Russell Wilson, Michael Vick, RG3, Kapernick, etc. But keep agreeing with each other. It provides comical relief.

We cannot sit back in a soft zone and hope they make mistakes. They are going to score their points but if we sit in a cover 2 zone our d will be run ragged. We will need to play them tight and disrupt the reciever routes. Yes, we will be burned a few times but we will have a chance to win. On offense we will need to hit a couple post patterns to stretch the field. If we can do that our run game should have success. We should also let JJ hit the three step timing routes that he is so good at.

I agree with your point on the Griz pass defensive strategy. But after three years, what makes you think that TG will change things up? Heck, the Poly QB gashed the Griz D all night long on two plays, the QB draw and the fake FB dive QB follow thru the hole, and TG didn't make any adjustments all game. I wouldn't expect him to change much of anything now......
