Dear Mr. O'Day

BTW, I did write O'Day to voice my support for keeping Tinkle around no matter the cost. His response was basically that UM didn't have the funds to pony up to counter any better offer Tinkle might get. It stinks that UM will pretty much always be a jumping off point for other coaches. Some day UM is going to be face with having to keep a coach that is truly good for the program. I feel like Tinkle is that very coach. There isn't a better ambassador for the school and the basketball program.

agree strongly....Wayne Tinkle as the face of U of M basketball, probably will never get better than him as far as the whole package.

I find it hard to believe that there is not a way to raise money to keep him around. Add one dollar to the football tickets, hell add five per ticket with the extra money ONLY to be used for coaching salaries. IF the Griz fans knew that the money was being used to keep our good coaches around, would they mind? I sure as hell wouldn't...
haha your right! with how high the football ticket prices are right now, i dont think i would even realize i paid 5 more dollars! now add 5 to the hoops ticket, that would be like a 50 percent increase haha OUCH! haha

Hmmm, I don't know what that even means in terms of offering Tinks a new contract. Did he give you a hint?

I may have minced words, but here is what he said verbatim,

"Like you, I agree that Coach Tinkle is extremely valuable to UM and our program. I would not be surprised to see him being considered for other jobs as early as this spring. Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources to compete against those schools who might be able to offer 4-5 times more than he is making currently at Montana. We saw that with our offensive and defensive coordinator positions in football last fall. However, with the resources we do have available to us, we will do our best to keep him."

Thanks Peaux,

Of course we can't offer 4-5 times what he makes, Jim. But we can offer him a decent living in Missoula. For chrissakes, think positive!

I agree. At least make it hard for him to leave as possible. Too bad they can't pull a Butler and pony up the big bucks for a coach on the rise.

Dear Jim,

Please move those rowdy kids from behind the baskets. It was embarrassing to have them rocking the Weber basket when Lillard was shooting free throws. We could have received a technical foul or something!!!!

I would suggest moving the students to the sideline opposite of the player benches. That way they are away from the baskets. You could just switch the students with the people currently sitting on the sidelines because they never seem to stand up for anything and therefore would not cause any problems by rocking the opponent's basket.

Just a suggestion.

84Griz :) :)

I'm one of those "old" guys that sits sideline, middle, top row, section 109. We are the people that donate money to athletics. We pay for the scholarships. We were assured when we selected those seats that we would have them as long as we paid for them. O'day within the past couple of years has reaffirmed that promise to me in writing. I purchase 2 GSA Golden Grizzly memberships. I have donated money towards a named schorlarship to an athlete to honor my Dad. I have made a 5-year commitment towards the Athletic Improvements Fund, and am considering a charitable gift annuity to athletics. I'M NOT MOVING ANYWHERE, especially to see my seats sit vacant for the majority of the season.
If you would have bothered to look at our section last night, you would have noticed we all stood for most of the game. And we cheered, as my throat can attest today.

It was nice to see that section actually standing up and cheering the whole game. Now the million dollar question... can you guys do that consistently next year? ;)

WE consistently stand and cheer. And are there EVERY game to do so. Will students be there if we have a down year? Will they EVER vote for an increase in the Student Athletic Fee?

They were given a chance to get the Zoo section back some time ago and failed miserably by not showing up.

Way to miss the point. The seats should never have been taken away from students in the first place, and they should not have to prove anything to anybody to get them back. If UM wants to increase student fees to pay for it, fine, but don't try to blame the students for UM's mistake.

Grizbacker1 said:
I would be more concerned about getting Tinkle signed pretty soon since his contract expires in 3 months.

Agreed. UM should make this a priority.

I blame the students? I don't think so, I just stated a fact about the latest attempt to get them courtside. I agree it never should have been done, but that isn't what your post was about, so save your condescending comment for another time ok ;)

But he forgot he said it!

I thought he meant it took him 8 hours the first time he tried but he ended up back where he started and it took another 8 hours on the second try! :? 8-)

Well that's all fine and dandy...AND SELFISH! Bottom line is IT'S THE STUDENT'S SCHOOL! GIVE THEM BACK THEIR SEATS! If you wouldn't move to a different seat and stop with your monetary support, you weren't a REAL fan anyhow.

It's most student's school for maybe four years. It's MY school for lifetime. Students refused to increase the Student Athletic Fee. The Regents approved a modest increase without a student vote. It may be a novel concept for you, but sometimes you are rewarded for what you do. I will be there for every game for as long as I am able. This includes the exhibitions and "gimme" games at the start of each season. I will be there regardless of W-L record. Will students? Will You? Students already miss a good number of games because of winter session, and only come anyway if we are having a great year. Except for a little detour to Vietnam, I have not missed more that a handful of games since I was a little kid. Heck, I can still barely remember going to games with my Dad when they were played in Schriber Gym. I have a distict memory of watching them put up the big wooden beams for the fieldhouse with my grandfather. And No, I'm not giving up my "excellen"t seats to be moved to other "excellent" seats, because that would require people in those other "excellent" seats, who are also UM donors, to move.

Thank you for all that you have done for our school & country! :thumb:

Too bad there wasn't some solution or compromise that would make everyone happy...

Based on the awesome state laws, Tinkle can't get paid more from the state to my knowledge. However, I don't know of any stipulations that would keep him from receiving subsidized income based on his value to UM and private donations. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if there were people that put together $75,000 extra per year then it would be ok. I know there are already roundball fundraisers but does that money go to the Head Coach subsidized salary?

Don't get all pissy about being called out for selfishness. It's always me, me, me with some people. Geez! And no I won't be there since I live in Seattle, but I am at my computer every game cheering them on and wishing I could be at every game...IN ANY SEAT!

Dear 84Griz,

Please stop overreacting to this situation. You are the problem and not the solution. Has this happened so many times that you can't keep track? Let nature run it's course and stop being a liberal freakout.

Thank you,

Management

We are witnessing right here on egriz the problem with seating controversy. is there an easy solution? Hell no, but there is a solution. Giving both sides of this the benefit of the doubt, I have noted it before, and will again. It needs to be an expectation for whoever is in those seats to make noise, and have fun.

For every argument about the students only being there for good games, good teams, and if we are winning. Give it a break, those same damn things exist with the people with the money, too. Does it make it any more right, wrong to not be there, because your pocket book speaks louder? Sorry, but the eliteists that feels it is different for them, that is BS!! It is also BS some of the pocket book talkers think their money can dictate what other fans can or cannot do at the games.

I don't care where I am sitting, and who is near me, rather it be football, or basketball, I am there to get loud, and show my support as loud as I want, and stand, or sit. If you don't like, your pocket book gives you no right to bitch, either!!!

I wish Mick's, and Tinkle's pregame over the tournament could be played here again. All in good nature they talked about the environment and how some fans needed to be taught how to act for the sake of bettering the environment. I wish I could remember Tinkle's exact quote, but it was right on the money, and he said without offending anyone, or siding with either. In my words/interpretation of what he said "It is college basketball, not some sort of assylum." Meaning, quiet is not part of the equation at college basketball.

By the way, I do know some people that refuse to buy better seats for the season, and a good reason why? The few times they have sat in the better seats, the environment stunk, and they do not want to part of, or around rude stuck up attitudes!!!

They prefer to sit in areas they can have fun, and not be ridiculed for being loud, or being told to "shut up" or "sit the fuck down." One of my friend's brought his parents and few of their friends to a GRIZ game a few years ago, about a group of 12. Of the 12, 8 of them were 60, or older. A certain group of "priveledged" GRIZ fans did not like their view was being blocked. They politely told them, "we are here to cheer the team on, why don't you join in the fun? The support is good for team."

The bitching continued, finally 2 of the older couples in the group of 12 turned around, and told them, "We are just as old, if not older than you, we too have health issues, but if we can do it, so can you. If you don't like it go find another place to sit, we are here to do what we do best."

Funny part is about 1/2 dozen of those fans went and sat else where, meanwhile another few dozen joined in the fun, and it was a great time for all.

Since then, they refuse to sit in any are of fans that don't knpw how to liven it up, so they sit in the 2nd level all the time now. Yet, that experience is the reason they won't or don't give more, than they do.

My Grandfather got presented a plaque at center court years ago for his decades of support and not missing a game. He taught my family how to love the Griz and be a fan. You know where he sat? The top of the upper level west side. Nothing fancy...hell, they were still flat bleacher style back in the day if I do recall. My point is, he was a true fan. Donated to the school and didn't expect "special" favors for it. And boy did he love watching the students(Zoo) do their thing. He would be horrified by the remodel and where the students were put.
And I am all for getting people to stand up and cheer, but to expect the current "student section sitters" to act like they are 20 years old for a whole game is very unrealistic. Get the students back(which I guess means CHANGE WINTER BREAK).

UM is a public institution. It doesn't "belong" to anybody, no matter what you've donated. Decisions should be based on the public good.

tell that to moroninsilver...donated to the university for the love of the U, as long as he gets HIS seats.

Students should be court side. Yeah, they can over-react and make stupid decisions, but they pay tuition and extra fees for the privilege. I'm sorry that some people don' like their over-zealousness, but I prefer it to fans sitting on their hands.

If I'm not mistaken this is a direct quote from the writings of Karl Marx
