Make it 2 for 2 for the Butte High Bulldog track team.
One day after Erika McLeod was named the Gatorade Montana Girls’ Track & Field Athlete of the Year, Dalton Daum took home that honor on the boys’ side. The award was announced this morning.
The honor comes after a stellar junior year on the track for Daum, who is also a top receiving prospect for the Bulldogs.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior sprinter won a pair of individual state championships last month in Great Falls. Daum took gold in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.86 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 21.70.
A 2014 Academic All-State selection, he also won both the 100 (10.87) and the 200 (21.78) at the Eastern AA Divisional meet in Butte.
“Dalton Daum is truly a gifted track and field athlete,” Butte High head coach Arie Grey said. “He has proven that he is a very smooth and explosive sprinter.”
A member of the National Honor Society, Daum has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple area food and clothing drives to benefit families in need and as a youth football and track coach. He has maintained a 3.87 GPA in the classroom. Daum is also a key member of the Butte Miners American Legion baseball team.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.

Congratulations to Daum, in athletics and even more important, what he does away from athletics. He is taller than I thought. Here is to hoping he will be a GRIZ. Anyone know who is interest is with regarding his college athletic future in terms of sport and school?

I don't. My son joins him on the football team this year so maybe I will hear some scuttle. I have heard he is interested in the Griz but I can't even recall where I heard that much less if it was reliable. In other words- perfect egriz speculation. As a Butte Griz I just like to keep egriz up on any potential prospects from the Mining City. I think this kid would be golden. Agree Hammer?

With talent like that, Oregon must be interested...in both of the winners.

Totally agree. I cant wait to watch "The Dauminator" play his senior year this fall. I have also heard he is a Griz fan but I expect the cats to come hard also. If he puts up huge numbers this fall he may receive some larger offers as well. It will be interesting to see how the younger Cook at QB and Daum develop this fall. Daum was always Dallas Cooks go to guy the last couple seasons. And yes Daum is very much on UM coaches radar.

I have watched him for the past 2 years (from the opposing side) in football. Glad it is his last 2 years. The kid is special. Hope he is a Griz after all the grief he has put is through.... :)

Awesome post, grizpack! :thumb:

For Egriz in general, Daum is a Griz Fan. I'm dreaming he becomes a Griz. He's getting other attention of course. It would be a big deal if Griz Football landed him.

The Griz haven't had an athletic offensive player from Butte since Josh Paffhausen...

Erika McLeod, who won 4 events at State this year and finished 2nd in another, signed with The University of Montana!!!

i hope she is as good as advertised, otherwise she'll be excoriated as another ill-advised hometown move by md.

Wasn't he also a state champion in a track event? I like the parallels here. :thumb:
(a sprint event, if I remember this right)

Josh was a decent sprinter but don't remember him winning the state championship. He had no where near the 100 meters that Daum runs.

He was state champion in the 300m hurdles, I believe. As a freshman, he ran on our 4x100 relay team, but we didn't place that year (1990). I believe (but my memory is fuzzy on this one) that he actually may have held the state record in the 300 hurdles for a few years, which has since been broken by another Butte guy, Jake Larson, and held since 2000.

Paffer (Josh Paffhausen) was a few years behind me in school back in the day, so I don't remember his track results. But I do remember he was a great QB (family lines), and a high school state champion QB...that went on to QB/WR for the Griz. He was in a battle with Hawaiian Brian Ah-Yat, and since Josh could play another position he did (WR).

A quick little snibbit on Dalton Daum...yesterday while playing Catcher (American Legion Baseball), he threw out a base runner trying to steal second, and he hit a home-run.

He also plays varsity basketball during the season...4 sport athlete.

The only thing this kid doesn't do is fix the potholes in town! :thumb:

Not enough time to fix all of those.

You and I probably graduated pretty close to each other. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to play football with Josh, as he was too far behind me. My senior year, we had a kid named Dan Walsh playing quarterback and my Junior year another former Griz (although he played DB for y'all and not QB) was under center, Todd Ericson. I was actually between Paffhausen's, Josh's big brother Todd played QB for us my Sophomore year, before I could play varsity.
