Make it 2 for 2 for the Butte High Bulldog track team.
One day after Erika McLeod was named the Gatorade Montana Girls’ Track & Field Athlete of the Year, Dalton Daum took home that honor on the boys’ side. The award was announced this morning.
The honor comes after a stellar junior year on the track for Daum, who is also a top receiving prospect for the Bulldogs.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior sprinter won a pair of individual state championships last month in Great Falls. Daum took gold in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.86 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 21.70.
A 2014 Academic All-State selection, he also won both the 100 (10.87) and the 200 (21.78) at the Eastern AA Divisional meet in Butte.
“Dalton Daum is truly a gifted track and field athlete,” Butte High head coach Arie Grey said. “He has proven that he is a very smooth and explosive sprinter.”
A member of the National Honor Society, Daum has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple area food and clothing drives to benefit families in need and as a youth football and track coach. He has maintained a 3.87 GPA in the classroom. Daum is also a key member of the Butte Miners American Legion baseball team.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.
