The family also dismissed the rumors that Dallas' decision to go the junior college route was forced by academics, offering his acceptance at both Washington State and Montana State as evidence. Choosing a junior college is a way for Dallas to keep his hopes of playing at the highest level alive.

Seems the article disputes the academic's argument

Like I said, trust me it WAS academics. They aren't going to state the unfortunate fact that the kid wasn't ready for D1 college in that regard. That is why we have JuCos - give the kids another chance to get their stuff together. D1 teams don't want a kid that might not make it through their first year in school. This is a good move for the kid, look for him in a couple years...

:agree:

Washington State and Oregon would have offered money had his academics been stronger.
You do not know that Wazzu and Oregon would have offered him a full ride scholly if his Academics were better. Jeez you are a homer. Cam Newton went to a JUCO because he damn near got thrown off of Florida's team for stealing computers.

Also being a "preffered walk-on" at a bigger school like Oregon and Wazzu does not mean what you think it means. Walk-ons at those school's have virtually zero chance to ever even be considered for playing time. Lot's of FBS coaches probably couldn't even tell you most of their walk-ons names.

Does anybody know if the academic issue something that just came up recently or a long term issue that could have been addressed with some summer studying or tutoring perhaps? I would think that the passing academies and high end camps he attended would stress the importance of academics. Without the grades he will never be able to showcase his athletic talents.

Hate to be harsh, but if you can't handle high school, GOOD RIDDANCE.

You have to be whole new level of underachieving to not make the grade.

Yup, it's a fact Cook did NOT have any type of actual scholarship offer from Oregon or Wazzu. I can't actually find anything documented to show he had a walk-on offer at Wazzu other than what his parents told the Standard. I'm not knocking Cook either. I would have been more than happy to see the kid get his shot at the FBS.

Let's be honest about something else too, the Juco he IS attending, isn't exactly churning out FBS players either. JUCO football in California, Texas and Florida is VERY GOOD. IF Cook was a bigtime prospect simply going the JUCO route in order to help himself get a major FBS offer in two years, HE WOULD NOT be going to this school in North Dakota. He would be playing in the JUCO leagues in Texas, Cali or Florida. PERIOD. For Dallas' sake, I hope reality sets in eventually and he doesn't burn the bridges with every school (Montana, Montana State, EWU, Idaho State) that ACTUALLY WANT him, as opposed to setting those bridges ablaze with nothing but HOPE for the schools that he THINKS should want him.

 Of course, it's not a talent thing. He's got his sights set on the NFL and he just needs to showcase how good he is without a college coach trying to step in and teach him things he already knows.

"If I would have gone anywhere else I would've had to sit and would've lost some of the things I'm good at," he said. "(NDSCS runs) the same offense as us, so it's just step in and do what I do best."

Good point because we all know, thanks to the egriz coach of the decade, that kids right out of high school already know everything they will ever need to know to play well at the college level. No need to practice fundamentals or even have coaches to teach them. Heck the kickers don't even need to practice pats or fgs since if they were recruited to do so they will be highly accurate in college. These kids all already know how to tackle like nfl all pros too so no need to keep them up to the college level and faster pace.

I believe this was all covered in the coaching for dummies book currently being reread by coach D. Que PR's lecture in 3...2...1...

Nice post HavGriz. You are totally correct. You can open the sports page in any city in California today and find a similar story of a QB that didn't get the D1 offer that they expected. Conner Wynn, who's brother played QB at Utah but quit because of injuries, had no offers. He threw for 2288 yards and had 27 TDs and 10 INTs. Plus he is 6' 2" and 220lbs. He led his team to San Diego CIF championship. He also has a 3/4( Philip Rivers) type delivery that concerned some coaches.Conner will attend Riverside CC which is a national power coached by Tom Craft a former San Diego State head coach that puts some QB's in FBS schools. Craft will tweak his delivery and mentor him. Cook's situation seems oddly different IMO.

Grizpack, not sure of your point. Butte is a JUCO power that produces TONS of FBS players. Arod didn't go to an obscure JUCO in North Dakota. Here's a list of the players the JUCO Cook is going to sent to four-year institutions from 2012.

Darryl White, QT, Lincoln University (DII)
Ferrari Shores, OL, Doane College (NAIA)
Derek Butcher, DT, Florida Atlantic University (DI – FBS)
Gannon Sinclair, TE, Missouri State University (DI – FCS)
Kelvin Wilkins, DB, Southeast Missouri State University (DI – FCS)
Kimani Rush, DT, Grambling State University (DI – FCS)
Aaron Roundtree, DB, University of Minnesota (DI – FBS)
Trey Sims, DB, Northwood University (DII)
Brady Kortes, DB, Minot State University (DII)
Eric Mielke, PK, St. Cloud State University (DII)
Cedric Chappell, WR, Valley City State University (NAIA)

From the Buttesports.com
“He’s their guy” at quarterback, Scott said. “He’ll be playing next year, elevating his game. A lot if it was who could get him on the field the soonest so he doesn’t lose those skills.”

Cook said he might attend NDSCS for as little as a semester, depending on his SAT scores and his options beyond at a four-year school. Cook’s former teammate Nick Butorovich played last year at NDSCS before transferring to play at Iowa Western.

It really doesn't sound like "their guy" plans on being "their guy" for longer than a semester if he can help it.

Other schools showed interest in the quarterback, including Washington State and the University of Oregon, both of which offered preferred walk-on status. Montana State also showed interest, though Bobcat head coach Rob Ash recently made the decision to stick with the four quarterbacks already on his roster. Cook had been accepted academically at both Montana State and Washington State.

From KXLF
A number of Division II and NAIA schools also came calling, Scott said. But those schools wouldn't provide Dallas with the ability to speak to other schools interested in signing him.

Wow, does this guy think really think a school wants to tie up time and money educating his son while giving other schools access to poach him?

The family also dismissed the rumors that Dallas' decision to go the junior college route was forced by academics, offering his acceptance at both Washington State and Montana State as evidence. Choosing a junior college is a way for Dallas to keep his hopes of playing at the highest level alive.

It's been over 25 years since I was choosing a college to attend, back then a minimum score was required to gain acceptance into college as well as meet minimum qualifications to play athletics. Those who didn't meet the minimum SAT scores for Division 1 athletics were known as prop 48 (ie. academic non-qualifiers). How does one gain acceptance academically at MSU and WSU yet have SAT scores that need improvement from attending a JUCO?

it is easier to be admitted to MSU or U of M or many other schools than it is to pass through the NCAA Clearinghouse.

The kid had a choice between MSU and some obscure juco in North Dakota? That is no choice at all. He did the right thing and good luck to him.
