Here is a review that is dated today from stadiumjourney.com

http://www.stadiumjourney.com/stadiums/dahlberg-arena-s816

Not to take anything away from Dahlberg but the author is kind of a homer. He's from Belgrade and a self admitted Bobcat fan. The people that write for stadium journey are people that are trying to get their areas on the map. He's also done reviews of Wa-Griz, the cats football and basketball stadiums that bloody mess in east spokomptom, holt arena, plus the Metra and the Osprey ballpark. Kudos to him though to put us in a good light and be in biased in his reviews.

A nice review, but how on Earth does a reviewer miss the "Mo Club" for downtown eats?

The writer makes it sound like its pretty much been the same, a few seats removed in 1998, since construction in 1953. In fact, in 1953 and for many years thereafter, it was a giant curved ceiling over a dirt floor, with high school bleachers installed, and an east west orientation compared to the current north south floor orientation. The construction using gigantic laminated curved beams to enclose the space was something new, the beams brought in on special flat cars on the Milwaukee Railroad nearby, as there was no other way to transport the gigantic beams.

The dirt floor allowed it to be a genuine multi-purpose facility that could handle rodeos, elephants, track meets, and whatever else they could stick under a roof, with a fairly complex portable raised floor for basketball games.

It has been through two massive overhauls during that 60 years, and the current facility is a long, long ways from the "original" which was just called "The Field House."

The first major renovation, just prior to 1970, added three new curved arch laminate beams to the originals, switched the orientation from E/w to N/S, and put in the permanent "Tartan floor" which was supposedly a rugged surface that could accept both basketball and elephants, No horses, though. It allowed for indoor track meets, which is the purpose of the two remaining odd tunnels at the north end of the arena, where the track lanes are still visible, as is the old Tartan surface. It was the worst idea for a basketball surface ever devised, although UM gained some advantages from it since it was the only team in the conference that could figure out how to dribble on the odd, somewhat inelastic surface.

The 1998 renovation was really a first class effort and produced a first class facility. If and when they allow adults to have adult beverages, it will be a great place to enjoy a game.

What is spokompton? Where is it? I'm curious. If you trying to describe a combination of Spokane, Wa. and Compton, Calif, you are not keeping up...Compton is largely Latino, so I don't get the reference but then racism related posts always confuse me. I'm sure that isn't your intent.

Sorry, about the dated reference. That's what we called it in high school back in the 90's when we would make drug runs back and forth. No racial intent unless you only equate gangs and drugs to a certain color. I dont since I'm wt and was involved in both in my misguided youth.

Spokvegas uh? Boy, it has been a long time.

I remember growing up in the late '70s and early to mid 80's and going to not only Griz basketball games but the Shrine circus every year at Dahlberg. Do they still do the Shrine Circus there?

When I was a kid I thought Dahlberg was HUGE. LOL!

This is the last year of the Shrine Circus in Missoula - this year the Missoula city council banned the use of wild and exotic animals in performances after July 2016, so that pretty much is the end of the Shrine Circus in Missoula.

"It is located along the banks of the Clark Fork of the Columbia River".

Wow, nobody has called the Clark Fork that since "02", that's 1802.

Not really that dated of a reference... Even as a recent grad (without the drug runs) we still call it that. Nothing racial at all about it, really just something we find kind of amusing. Honestly this just comes across as looking for something to be offended about.

I'm not offended but millions of others might be if what it implies is not overlooked. Sorta like Methtana, since there is massive drug and alcohol up there, or so the statisticians say.

There's millions that read eGriz? What coverage! And we thought no one cares about FCS football.

And yet as a native Montanan, I am not offended by Methtana. You are reading way too much into this.

The thing that makes me laugh about this sort of stuff is that the racism is in the person complaining about the fabricated offense who sees the world through their racist prism. If I'm not dirty minded I won't get the dirty joke...
