Copper and Gold

Undefeated in national championship appearances wearing the Copper and Gold. I don't believe the white unis has any silver to them, but it would have been 'ashen old dead man's ass gray,' if there was.

A picture of the 2001 celebration was just as much fun and the uniforms had class.

Really? Facts are facts even when they're inconsistent. What color was Terry Dillon's jersey?
Since the 1962 press guide lists the school colors as "Copper, Silver and Gold" that jersey would have been Copper in color. There is no mention of spirit colors or other colors.

I think we have an interesting history having used completely different colors at different points in time, and I understand the nostalgia, respect and reverence people have for the copper and gold.

I also think they are pretty ugly and don't want to see them more than once every few seasons as a change of pace, but that's simply my opinion.

I think if there was any kind of functional way to actually get (nice looking) copper, silver, and gold uniforms and licensed products, we'd all be all over it. I think in theory we probably have the most unique and interesting color combination of any school out there. But it's just not possible to mass produce in the real world. And the throwbacks are just used to honor a time period that we all have nostalgia about. So it's fine. Can we quit arguing yet? Sigh. I know the answer - don't tell me....

If everyone on here was as respectful as yourself when we posted, we would have a lot fewer arguments, no doubt. Hopefully the argument does not ensue from this that egriz would be a boring place in that event. ;)
I do respect the opinions of all on here, but since I did attend U of M when those were the colors worn by our athletic teams, I do revere them and will defend them against anyone that does not respect the fact that they are, like it or not, part of the history of the athletic programs. I knew a lot of those athletes when I was at school and they wore the colors with pride. I don't recall then a time when anyone complained about the colors and I was gone and in the Army for about eight years or so when I learned they were changing the colors starting in 1996.
I have honestly not ever heard anyone that I know from that era that was happy about that move, but I do wear my maroon, including my 2001 John Edwards jersey that I had delivered to me at Fort Stewart, GA prior to the championship game so that I could wear it to the game in Chattanooga.
This is a matter that I would compare to my feelings on baseball vs. soccer. I grew up playing baseball and I don't watch near as often as I once did, but people that talk about how boring the game is to me don't understand all that is going on during the inaction. On the other hand, I cannot stand soccer, have never watched a game from start to finish and no more than as a captive participant and to me I don't understand the attraction to a game of ping pong on that scale that could end after extra time on penalty kicks and question why time is kept if it means nothing at the end.
If I had grown up playing soccer, I might feel differently, but I would prefer to watch bowling if you give me a choice between the two.

Thank you for your service!

I was there, wore one. Maroon like today. Always Maroon, silver pants. Swarthout made the change to TX burnt orange in '69 along with their wishbone. It was reversed in '96 .So quit being so stubbornly wrong.

Does that mean we can't wear black jerseys either? Oh my, you better contact the UM equipment room and tell them to burn 'em. Quit being "that" guy who in "get off my lawn" fashion can't adjust.

I'm sure that was a great honor to wear that uniform and play the game under one of the all-time great coaches. I do not feel I am being stubborn about this at all though for several reasons.
I have many memories of coming to Missoula and visiting the pawn shops with my dad that were down by the train station on Higgins Avenue, Alder and Spruce Streets. Typically, we would go into the Army-Navy that occupied the original Bob Ward's store.
One time we went in there, there was a basket full of stocking caps with "Montana Grizzlies" across the front and they were selling them very cheap and I asked if I could have one. The guy in the store came over and told a story to my very frugal father about these guys that had been in town from D.C. who bought a bunch of the hats because they were Redskins fans and the team colors were the same. He went on to say to them that this was actually copper and they shared a laugh over that because we all know that was not copper. It is what the University of Montana used to represent copper, however. With that, I respectfully share this passage:

The official school colors of the University of Montana are copper, silver, and gold; these were chosen in recognition of the state's mining history. Contrary to popular perception, these colors have never changed, with the confusion stemming from the university's decision to represent "copper" with either maroon or "Texas orange" at various times in its history.

When the university was founded in 1893 and its colors were chosen, a lack of copper dye led the school to use maroon, and occasionally other colors, to represent copper. This had the effect of having the school's athletic teams not always being represented across the board by the same uniform colors. In 1967, head football coach and athletic director Jack Swarthout, who personally preferred the maroon and silver used by the football team, sought to make the schools colors more consistent and held a vote among UM coaches. They selected Texas orange (burnt orange to represent copper) and yellow gold to be used on the school's uniforms and it remained for the next 30 years.

The maroon was brought back in 1993 as part of the university's centennial celebrations and a student survey in 1995 showed support for a return to maroon and silver uniforms. Despite some vocal opposition, by 1997, the colors began to phase into the maroon and silver that are used.

You're starting it again? :ROFLMAO:

Hey, I hope they do, but still not getting my hopes up.
Well it's better than arguing about some of the stupid crap that people argue about on here all day long every day.

And the M Store manager says it flat out. So either she's really wrong or it's happening.

If you think about it it's not a bad move by the university - create a lot of buzz around the season and force everyone to go buy new merch. Sounds like a pretty good marketing scheme to me.

But which game do they wear them? Is it early and catch the momentum from the off season or do they wait and create anticipation... or somewhere in the middle like HC which already has a parade theme around the '95 championship ... inquiring minds want to know...

From what the M-Store manager said, it sounded like they were going to wear them all season? Do you think that's even possible? They've never done anything like that before but it's not impossible.

IF they do it, I think you should honor the Champions and wear them for Eastern Washington.

Great post as usual. I really miss home so much it's just cool to see all that. Between the M store pleading not to have it on TV and talking about her experience with TV interviews, the guy that I'm sure some of you have seen if he is the manager of the pizza place falling all over himself, very entertaining.
I never did see if Guy Fieri did an episode on that place, but I remember being in Missoula when his car had been spotted in front and it was all abuzz in town.
Nothing like the potential of a retro uniform though. :D 🕵️‍♀️ If there is something to sleuth out, I know egriz will track it relentlessly!
