MBBALL Conference Tournaments

Debated with myself about starting a thread about the other conference tournaments … keeping in mind that winners from the other one-bid leagues are the competition when (if 🤨 ?) the Griz get the Big Sky auto-bid.

However, a story developed in the Coastal (CAA): Delaware, #12 seed, has just won its 4th game in a row … knocking out the #1 seed. They will play for the CAA tournament championship (and auto-bid) tomorrow. Hell of a run!

With that, five #1 seeds have lost, and only Chattanooga in the SoCon has even an outside shot at an NIT bid. Of course, any #1 seeds from the Power conferences will get NCAA bids anyway.

Those five losses mean that lesser seeds will win those conference tourneys … in the Ohio Valley, #2 SIU Edwardsville won. For me, the interesting matchup will be #5 Navy facing #2 American U. for the Patriot championship.

FWIW: In case you missed it, the kitties pounded ISU 80-60.

The Beasley brothers are playing in the WCC Semifinal Vs Gonzaga currently. The younger, non-Griz Beasley is playing well. Robby doesn't seem to get much run.

Hard to say. PSU was 2-7 on the road before the Idaho game and Idaho was 4-5 but i think PSU matches up better with the Griz.
I disagree. PSU’s length caused problems for the Griz and for Idaho in the regular season. The Vandys were lucky to catch them on an ice cold shooting night.

And we are the lucky beneficiaries of the result as well. Hope we take advantage.
Tough to beat a team 3 times in a year, but as our hard-fought win vs. NAU demonstrated, Utah can be done.

I do think we are going to need more out of Kai, Joe and Malik tonight, including Kai and Joe making their FT's, and Austin probably again needs to play some quality minutes with Kai and Malik not 100 %. We have to be more tonight than just The Branden and Money show, and I always get nervous when we play Idaho because they have the big and talented Billings Skyview Falcon Mims--hope Te'Jon stays out of foul trouble against him, and we can get a few good minutes out of Jensen, Amari and Jalen to back him up !!!

Go GRIZ !!!

Mims had a huge presence in the paint last night. Unfortunately he only played 27 minutes, but thats because of foul trouble. You're right, if Te'Jon can contain and stay out of trouble that would be huge.

Lots of games on today, with several of the biggest conferences just starting. There are also four tournament championships being decided today.

The two most interesting of the championship games are those without a #1 seed in them. The Patriot has #5 Navy (GO NAVY!) against #2 seed American University. Of even more general interest is in the Coastal/Colonial, where #12 Delaware tries to make it five wins in a row against #2 NC Wilmington. I don’t see that happening, but it would be a hoot if it did.

So far, five #1 seeds have been eliminated. Of those, only two – Chattanooga from the SoCon and Towson from the CAA – have ranking numbers good enough for an outside chance for an NIT invite. And even those look pretty slim to me.

People always say this but when you are a dominant team all season long you expect to beat most of the teams 3 times because that’s what it takes.

Every top team in their conferences across the country will be beating teams for a third time this week.

Don't disagree, but other top teams will lose that third game this week. So, since we don't want to be one of them, I'm saying we had better be ready because we know Mr. Potato Head will be really hungry after going 0-2 against us and wants his revenge tonight !!!

All eyes tonight will be on the CAA championship to see if 12 seed Delaware (16-19) can punch their ticket to March Madness. They finished the regular season 12-19 and have won 4 games in 4 days to reach the title game which included upsetting 1 seed Towson last night. They'll have their hands full tonight with 2 seed UNC Wilmington who's been playing very good ball, but man would it be funny to see a sub .500 team make the tournament lol. The game is at 5:00 on CBSSN. I'm definitely gonna turn it one before the Griz game tonight.

Totally agree (see my comment above). An easy call, since we don't really care about either team.

On the "hard to beat a team three times" ... found this on Reddit:
I saw this article linked elsewhere and thought it was worth sharing here. Something to keep in mind during conference tournaments that are coming up. The most interesting snippet is below.

"According to STATS LLC., there have been 981 similar matchups across Division I college basketball over the past 10 seasons. The teams entering the third game 2-0 are a combined 710-271 (.724 winning percentage) in the third meeting. So over a 10-year period in college basketball including almost 1,000 games, the team that won the first 2 games won the third meeting 72.4% of the time. So it clearly doesn’t follow that it is hard to beat a team 3 times. In fact, it’s actually kind of easy."
The link he posted was no longer active, but I've seen the statement before and believe it to be valid. After all, if you were better than a given team in two straight meetings, you're probably still better the third time around.
