Coming to Missoula

On a Griz weekend, there is no better place than the Depot. Great and friendly atmosphere. Lots of Griz people there. One co-owner is a former Griz athlete. The other co-owner is great too. One or both of them work the floor almost every night. The Depot has 3 adjacent but completely connected places to eat and drink (assuming they have now opened the formal dining room from covid days). The Deck is a great place to look around, mingle, drink, eat and watch sports. I assume that various UM teams still take their recruits/families to the Depot, at least they used to.

1889 has good food, including steak, but doesn't have the larger friendly atmosphere full of Griz fans. And, as noted, is very expensive.

JD Quinn takes his Griz teammates, and GrizPony and me, to the Depot on every Homecoming. JD is a great and fun guy, has a nice job, and is married to a great woman and hotshot lawyer whom he met at UM.

If you don't care about atmosphere, then get a Costco steak and find a BBQ.

Note to self....avoid the Depot.

Hey Griz fans,
Coming in on the charter Friday afternoon and looking for some advice on where to eat Friday night. Prefer a decent and fun place. Good drinks and atmosphere. Steak would be awesome.

Also looking forward to the tailgate. Been there before but don’t recall if “the enemy” is welcome to join locals? Love getting to meet and bs with locals.

Looking forward to the game. What’s your expectations of the outcome?

I forgot to mention that you absolutely have to go to Paul’s pancake parlor for breakfast. The pancake selection is probably the largest in the state, perhaps the northwest 😂 and the sourdough pancakes in particular are excellent. The starter is like 80 years old or something like that, they have a little tid bit about in in the menu. Definitely worth adding to an order if going with something other than pancakes.

Sure, but just try and get a seat on Gameday weekends.

If you have been to Griz stadium before, chances are you came to my tailgate? I have a carved bear of our Mascot, Monte standing in my truck holding the Griz flag. All people are welcome at our tailgate for a snack and cold beverage and shoot the breeze about?? Please stop by with your fans? Located in lot "M" across the footbridge from the Press Box Sports Bar.
Walked by that bear for many years, you have the music playing as well!!!
We now park in lot R as we have a handicap person that needs a cart to get to the stadium.

If you are coming from South Dakota the Montana ambiance and atmosphere may not be all that enticing.

One of the places that has not been mentioned but in my opinion is actually very good for steak and seafood is Kobe' Seafood and Steak out on North Reserve. It's a Teppanyaki style place that cooks your meal right at the table! While you won't find a Montana atmosphere, you will find good food and friendly staff at a comparatively reasonable price.
You also should have an easier time getting an Uber or Lyft out to North Reserve and back than all the way to Lolo.

1889 is the best steakhouse in town.

Scotty’s Table is the best restaurant in town now that The Pearl is closed.

The Depot is always good. Especially the night before or after games.

Paul’s is best breakfast (Old Post best downtown breakfast)

Mo Club best bar / burgers

Bigga best pizza

Notorious best BBQ

Why, I love the Depot. And they have my favorite drink in the entire world, the Jamaican Bicycle, as a drink (not as a shot).

And, I might add the beef tenderloin at Plonk (downtown, on North Higgins). We were there last week. I ordered the sockeye, but they were out, so my disappointed second choice was the tenderloin. The entire plate was excellent beyond my wildest expectations. There were two huge pieces of perfectly cooked medium rare tenderloin, extremely tasty fingerling potatoes with a sauce of pine nuts and other yummies and a slew of asparagus spears. I was almost glad they were out of the salmon.

Come find my at my tailgate spot, we'll be up and running 2.5(ish) hours before kickoff. In spot #22 in the grass outside the north entrance.

We're easy to spot - here's what we look like before people start rolling in.

I don’t know, food quality notwithstanding, I just can’t see driving an out-of-towner out to Lolo. Downtown is where I’d rather hang.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. Nothing to add to the football conversation (like most of you! lol) but as a prolific eater in Missoula and elsewhere couldn’t resist the where-to-get-a-steak discussion. Here’s the deal:

The Depot - The atmosphere is maybe fun depending on how you define fun? But otherwise you’d think it’s 1992 not 2022. If under seasoned steak, grocery store cabernet and cocktails served as “single” or “double” are your jam, then this is the place.

1889 - Food is materially better than The Depot, wine list veers towards interesting and cocktails are sometimes competent…but really it’s a “just fine” steakhouse in a hotel lobby like you’d find in probably a hundred other cities in the US.

Lolo Creek Steakhouse - a local institution, and it’s a fun experience without a doubt for reasons other posters have described. But if we’re being honest, the food is mediocre on their best day and the wine list makes us thankful we have the Depot

Plonk - deepest wine list in Missoula and solid cocktail program. More interesting / varied menu than the steakhouses listed above but we’re in MT so they do serve steak to comply with local ordinance. Food is often very good, rarely excellent. No reservations and will be busy on a weekend night.

Scotty’s Table - it’s fine and you’d probably be happy if you went there, but wine selection is a tier below Plonk’s, food is on par with them at best (though if I wanted a steak specifically, might choose Scotty’s Table?), and pretty certain no cocktails (beer/wine only)

Second Set Bistro - considering food alone, easily the best in Missoula - steak frites & ribeye miles ahead of anything 1889 puts out of the kitchen. But atmosphere is a little more low key & crowd can oddly vary - some Fridays you can’t in without a rez, others you’ll wonder why it’s almost empty. Solid wine list - not as deep/interesting as Plonk or 1889 but there are some gems. Unfortunately no cocktails - beer/wine only.

Jaker’s - someone mentioned this. Please, no.

Let's be honest here...Costco meat is pretty darn good. I made Costco Ribeyes this past weekend in fact. Cast ironed them, butter basted with rosemary for perfect medium rare doneness. My damn forearms are still sore doing that to 6 steaks!

It pains me to type this, but the Mo Club burgers were god awful last Friday. I ordered six of them for my group after talking the place up for several days beforehand. Asked for medium, and they ranged in doneness from rare to sawdust hockey puck. That's fine. I get it. It's always been a bit of a crapshoot. But the thing that sucked the most is everyone noticed a distinct chemical smell/taste. Maybe they had just cleaned the flat top or something. It's the Mo Club, so I'll be back. But if this was some random spot in Bumsville, Arkansas, I'd have to give it pretty low marks.

I was there in early August, mouth watering in expectation. They managed to fuck up my burger as well.  First time. I'll be back, but I'm damned tempted to go try Flippers, as I never have been in that place and people on here rave about it and their burgers.

Hot take: I'll never understand why people like Paul's. The wait is no where near worth the food.

Agreed.

Hot take: Mo Club burgers are over rated and based on pure nostalgia. I would rather burn up an hour and drive to Parkers in Drummond or give me flippers any day of the week.

Tagliare- Just do yourself a favor and go. Beats the hell out of any other sando shop in Missoula (Sorry Worden's lovers but they come in second).

Speaking of Nostalgia, it's like Hoagieville. I took my buddy there, who is from Manhattan, MT, and being from Missoula I thought he would like it. He hated it and didn't understand why everyone loves it. I took a look at my hoagie and cheese fries and pondered this disappointment and I chalked it up to the locals growing up on it. The hick from Manhattan is probably right; It probably just isn't that good, but I will still hammer down some hoagie cheese fries because I like them.

I will have my tailgate up and ready around 10am. Come by and shoot the breeze? All are welcome. Lot "M" behind GSA Tailgate. Brint, if you are this close now, maybe we will meet after all these years?
