Coincidence?

Sneed impressed me, but he needs to keep his eyes downfield. I counted at least two plays where he ran out of the pocket and tucked it for about 3-4 yards that he had a receiver wide open 20-30 yards down field.
Like many on eGriz, I had the impression -- live -- that he might have "bailed" early on a number of possible pass plays. Looking at the replay, I'm thinking it was not as prevalent as it seemed in "the heat of the moment" ... but it was still there. With some "coaching up," practice, and experience, that can be fixed. The best news is ... he throws pretty well on the run.
Yeah, I don’t think he ran too much in general, but a few plays stick out to me where he very clearly made the wrong decision.

And this is a more general observation, but what has me the most excited about this team is that nearly everything “bad” that happened in that game for us is something that is easily correctable. The obvious exceptions being that the O-Line is just not quite there yet. Special teams would have almost literally been flawless without those two completely indefensible mistakes by Flowers and JLM.

This team has loooong way to go to competing with the top of the FCS, but I really like what I’ve seen so far.

Yeah those two are probably going to pay the price for their sins this week, that's a Bobby focus area. Also JLM scared the shit out of me when he fielded that bouncing punt with I swear 8 enemies around him, that spells disaster way too often.

Yes. I have no idea why he went after that.

cause he's a gamer. takes risks lots of players wouldn't take. but without that mentality I don't know if he'd be the explosive player he is.

jealous you guys have him. he's fun

After the first "questionable" ST play, I said to my wife ... "Boy, he's gonna hear about that from Bobbie." By the end, I figured the whole ST group was going to be putting in some extra time. Their play was about 90% great, but there were some missed blocks (out of position?), etc. that Hauck is not going to stand for.

As for competing with the "top of the FCS" ... that depends upon what you mean by the "the top." After watching this game, I think they are maybe closer than some think. We recorded and then watched highlights of quite a few FCS games this weekend (many against FBS opponents, which does make it harder to judge). But people tend to forget that other teams have their own problems and are not quite the powerhouses some would like to consider them.

Are the Griz ready to contend for a Nattie? Not right now, and they probably lack some key pieces to do so this year (depth especially), even with more game experience. But if the Griz improve the way I expect them to over the season, I think they'll be pretty competitive at a high level of the FCS. With the relative lack of depth at some positions, injuries -- as usual -- could make or break the season.

He wanted to field the ball at the 40ish rather than let it roll deep into our end. Like someone said, he's a gamer for sure! Glad we have him!!

Go Griz!

I was on North end and ro me it didn't look like the ball was going very far but again, a long ways from the action. Seemed like a delayed and risky grab. Did he save 30 yards or 3 yards? That's a big difference for the gamble.

I agree it was a gamble and probably not a good move, I'm sure he will hear about it. Couln't help himself, he's a gamer and unafraid.

MSU 26 WIU 23

UM 26 - UNI 23

Both teams have home openers against MVC opponents. MSU plays a crappy first half and rights the ship in the second half. Griz play a lights out first half and lose some focus in the second half. Both fan bases see reasons for encouragement and areas for improvement. There is the possibility that this year's Brawl may mean more than it has from a playoff perspective than it has in a while.

Interesting for sure. One thing the Griz having going for them is their schedule. MSU has a tougher schedule this year IMO. Injuries are another issue. Who can stay healthy and which team actually develops and improves? Hard to say at this point, but I like what Sneed can do. Anderson is one hell of an athlete, but I don’t think he has the arm required for a top tier QB. He would damn near be a freak of nature if he did. He does everything else well. Just hate to see the kid in that role when he could be so productive elsewhere.

He should be playing LB and then go to the NFL, not now.

From watching both the Cats game and Griz game, Anderson is a better runner than Sneed, which is understandable since he was an excellent running back last year. But Sneed is a much better passer.

Yep. Defensively, I would rather plan for Anderson any day of the week. Sneed is cagey and multi dimensional. I really look forward to watching his development. He is a true QB. Anderson is a great athlete being plugged into play QB. Really if you think about that - what a failure on Choate's behalf. That is their backup QB? Actually crazy for a D1 program not to have more options. I get that Murray let the team down, but come on. Definitely won't be referring to MSU as QBU!

Actually with Hill’s failure to perform at QB, we were VERY thin this year before Sneed & Humphrey’s arrivals....Tanner Wilson would have been backup QB absent any other transfer in (and obviously I don’t think either Sneed or Humphrey are here if Stitt were still here)...I like where we’re at now a LOT better...

Omg , did you just bad mouth Hill ????
How dare you !!!
Your a big meany AZ

I thought it was a very heady play. He got a nice Sunday bounce to pounce on. It wasn’t so much the yardage he saved as the time on the clock. If that ball would have been allowed to roll dead that’s probably anywhere from 7-10 seconds. The time saved gave us the opportunity to run a few plays for the first half-ending field goal.

Ok, I know how this story goes but the original post was supposed to be more of a comparison of where the Griz and Cats stand now, after the first game against MVC opponents and where both teams may be headed in November. Maybe I wasn't clear in my original post. I think there are 2 pretty good teams here, MSU being more one dimensional on offense at this point. There are plenty of other posts to discuss Sneed's strengths which are numerable and weaknesses which exist. I simply find parallels between the Griz victory and the Cat victory but if I'm the only one then that is ok.

Makes sense. I didn't remember at what point in the game that had taken place.

I don’t think it was ever intended for Anderson to be a qb. They didn’t know about Murray until Summer. Rovig did not look good in the Spring. He had an injured hand. Jonsen broke his foot in January and they thought he would be good to go by Fall camp, but he was still not healed. Jonsen was a 4 star recruit out of hs. They brought in two excellent freshman in Bauman and Beltran who will be good, but need a little more time. Thus Anderson became the option. I don’t think it is a Choate failure.

Sounds more like a perfect storm if I’m reading you right. I loved Anderson’s moxie and the hard nosed running he did. You guys definitely earned that win. I don’t care who they play for, I love players who play with intensity and heart. Chad Newell is a prime example. Loved watching him play anyone other than the Griz.
