The more I thought about the South Dakota coach, the more I wanted to know. So I checked it out and found this. I highlighted some key stuff with the bold.
I'm well aware that it's a tough, cold business. Still, I did think FCS schools were generally better at keeping their programs in perspective. The SD administration -- or perhaps just this guy Sayler -- must be pretty damn full of itself to not even give a guy with Meierkort's record a chance.

I suspect Coach Meierkort will not be unemployed for long.
* [Translation]: "We're big time now. We don't need no guy hired as a piddling D-II coach."Sioux City Journal said:The man who guided the University of South Dakota football team through a transition from NCAA Division II to Division I status and became one of the most successful coaches in school history is no longer head coach.
USD athletic director David Sayler announced Tuesday that Ed Meierkort's contract will not be renewed. The current contract expires on June 30, 2012.
In eight seasons at the Coyote helm, the personable Chicago native compiled a 54-35 overall record -- the third most coaching wins in school history.

"The stuff that happens on the field is part of the bigger picture of how a program has to function," said Sayler. "I just felt the need for different leadership. ... this program is on the verge of big things. I felt we needed somebody to take the ball and run with it when heading into the Missouri Valley." Meierkort was hired in 2004 and produced a 9-2 record in his first season and runner-up finish in the North Central Conference. ... Meierkort was also on the sideline for most likely the biggest win in school history, a 41-38 upset of the University of Minnesota on Sept. 11, 2010.
During Meierkort's tenure, South Dakota set or tied more than 100 school records.
