Coaches dropping like flies...

The more I thought about the South Dakota coach, the more I wanted to know. So I checked it out and found this. I highlighted some key stuff with the bold.
Sioux City Journal said:
The man who guided the University of South Dakota football team through a transition from NCAA Division II to Division I status and became one of the most successful coaches in school history is no longer head coach.

USD athletic director David Sayler announced Tuesday that Ed Meierkort's contract will not be renewed. The current contract expires on June 30, 2012.

In eight seasons at the Coyote helm, the personable Chicago native compiled a 54-35 overall record -- the third most coaching wins in school history.
...
"The stuff that happens on the field is part of the bigger picture of how a program has to function," said Sayler. "I just felt the need for different leadership. ... this program is on the verge of big things. I felt we needed somebody to take the ball and run with it when heading into the Missouri Valley." [* Comment below]
...
Meierkort was hired in 2004 and produced a 9-2 record in his first season and runner-up finish in the North Central Conference. ... Meierkort was also on the sideline for most likely the biggest win in school history, a 41-38 upset of the University of Minnesota on Sept. 11, 2010.

During Meierkort's tenure, South Dakota set or tied more than 100 school records.
* [Translation]: "We're big time now. We don't need no guy hired as a piddling D-II coach."

I'm well aware that it's a tough, cold business. Still, I did think FCS schools were generally better at keeping their programs in perspective. The SD administration -- or perhaps just this guy Sayler -- must be pretty damn full of itself to not even give a guy with Meierkort's record a chance.

I suspect Coach Meierkort will not be unemployed for long.

Agree the ex-cat is a total jackass

if it's true about neuheisel at ucla i think it is just as well, he couldn't take advantage of all the turmoil at usc. one has to think it can't be that hard to recruit and win at ucla on a big time basis. i would really like to see them go after mike belotti hard if you can win at oregon like he did imagine what he could do if given the resource there.

I only bring this topic up because it has waves in the coaching ranks and will effect FCS

Coaches Fired this weekend:

MEMPHIS (Porter)
KANSAS (Gill)
ILLINOIS (Zook)
UAB (Calloway)
ASU (Erickson)
WSU (Wolf is rumored to be out)
UCLA (Neuheisel rumored to be out)

I am thinking Hauck wishes he would have waited for a few years to move up. All, but 1 or 2 of those are better gigs than UNLV. 2 playoff appearances later, and at least 20 wins later, he would be getting one of these jobs.

ASU would be a "sweet" gig, and potentially UCLA could be too.

I think you are correct.

Falling flies in the FCS Ranks (From The Sports Network. Compiled as of Nov 28)

School (W-L) . . . Former Coach (exit date) . . . New Hire, if known (date)
Columbia (1-9) . . . Norries Wilson (November 20) . . .
Eastern Illinois (2-9) . . . Bob Spoo (November 12) . . .
Fordham (1-10) . . . Tom Masella (November 19) . . .
Massachusetts (5-6)* . . . Kevin Morris (November 21) . . .
Richmond (3-8)† . . . Latrell Scott (August 22) . . . Wayne Lineburg (August 23)
SE Louisiana (3-8) . . . Mike Lucas (November 21) . . .
South Dakota (6-5)‡ . . . Ed Meierkort (November 22) . . . Wesley Beschorner (Interim)
Weber State (5-6) . . . Ron McBride (November 19) . . .
Western Carolina (1-10) . . . Dennis Wagner (November 13) . . . Mark Rhea (Interim)

* Jumping (limping) to FBS level and they'll start with a new coach!?
† New coach starts season, team does BAD. (That 7-4 record for the Griz last year starts to look not so terrible.)
‡ Geez, even a winning record couldn’t save this guy. (Or did he retired? Anyone know?)

My jaw literally hit the floor when I saw Richmond's record.

What is the deal with these ex national champs taking severe nose dives? (Richmond, Villanova, EWU)

Bit of a jump given the Pac 12 TV money, don't you think? Would have been quite the increase in income for him, though.

Erickson's base was $1.5 MM; he is due another year on his contract. ASU will need to go higher on the next one to get some one that could clean up the mess.
