Coach Holst

What is your opinion, should he have been fired? Given another year? What do you think should have happened?

It is unusual for a coach to be fired after making an appearance in the Big Dance, but Griz fans have high expectations. I know I do. It seems that we have been mired in mediocrity the last few years. A change is probably for the better, even if Holst is a good guy.

I wish I were a bigger basketball fan. Im sure I would be if the community were more behind the Griz and the games were made an 'event' like going to the football games. It just seems like 'ho-hum', another basketball game whereas the football games you plan, you get dressed up, you party... you make it an EVENT that you schedule years around.
Big difference...
Sorry to see Holst go, I'm not so sure a new coach will bring these things to the Adams Center either

The problem was Hogan had already made up his mind and when Don won three in a row Wayne's timing was thrown off. Lucky for Wayne, we didn't beat Oregon. Don and his staff did deserve another year but they will survive, and fan expectations will be sky high next year no matter who is hired. Wayne has put himself on the spot...lets hope he finds another Glenn.

With the coach's record, it appears that he is weak in the recruiting area, which is the most important area of the job. He had a good opportunity to prove he could do the job, but his record speaks for itself. The Griz need to hire a coach who can recruit and who is willing to put in the travel time it takes during the off season. Montana deserves the best and the University should go after it.

Holst had the best personality & was the most likeable of the most recent coaches, but to me he overcoached to the point where it made the kids to nervous to do anything without his permission first. Also the games were boring as they were in desperate need of a few exciting players that could fire up the team & fans.
Anybody remember the Ferch brothers who played for the Bobcats back in the 80's. They made the games exciting, packed the bobcat stadium on all home games and made the griz coaches look like asses for not recruiting them as they didn't feel the Ferchs could play in our league.
We need some players, especially like Kral Ferch, who are team players that can make the game exciting.
Also, the students need to stop complaining about their seats, get them filled for the Games. I agree with Dennison that in order to get more students in the stands, they need to shorten the winter break by at least 3 weeks so there will be students in the stands. They can't have it both ways. Students, get off your duffs and support your Teams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think anyone who witnessed the Evergreen State or Northern Iowa games knows why Holst was fired. They nearly lost (and Hsould have lost) to Evergreen state (an NAIA team) at home, and were down by 40+ points int eh first 1/2 to Northern Iowa, adn the game wasn't even that close. Holst seeemed like a good guy, but he and his teams are inconsistant. Look at getting blwon out twice by Montana State, the last time at home, tehn beating them and Eastern Washington at teh tournament. If his players played liek that all season they would have had 20+ wins, and peopel would have felt good about the team. You know it is time for a coaching change when former bobcat players wonder what happened to Montana, and talk about how competitive the games used to be, and how sad the games are now, and they are right. Think about teh Bobcat football team over the past 15 years - is this where we want Grizzley basketball headed?

What I think fans expect from the Montana basketball program is to easily beat the lower level teams, be competitive with the mid and upper level teams, and rarely lose at home. This is how Grizzley basketball used to be. Now you feel lucky when they win.

I had the good luck to actually know Don on a personal level. I have never met a more upstanding guy. I don't agree with the fact that he was fired. I think that that Wayne Hogan could use some of the Business and Marketing classes that are taught at the University of Montana. He would learn some "marketing" skills and he wouldn't have to blame his failures as a business man on a coach...it's a classic case of putting the blame on someone else...I wonder if Mr. Hogan has a hard time showing his face in local Missoula business....

So am I to believe Hogan had no part in helping to fill Washington-Grizzly every saturday home game in the fall? No. This would also be the reason Missoula locals welcome him anytime.

The fact that the Griz kept winning after their 95 NC is why WA-Griz Stadium is filled. Not because of hogan. wake up and pull your brown nose from Hogan's.....
