Question, what happened to all of the posters that were praising the return of solid values and "doing the right thing" for the football program? Is this (naked nepotism) an example of being the right kind of role model for the student athletes?
For me this is far worse than any game time mistake. Far worse than the decision to kick off to start the game and after half time. Far worse than poor clock management or failure to make adjustments during the game. This decision was made without pressure and apparently without much forethought. Frankly I don’t understand it at all. As a coach why put yourself in the position of being second guessed or appear to give favoritism and financial support to a grandson? Why would you trade the relatively low cost of the scholarship to possibly jeopardize your own ability to lead? Let alone the negative impact this will have on his grandson in attempting to come into camp and make the team.
Perhaps he should have just taken $1,000 of his $157,000 UM salary and made it grandpa’s early Christmas present to his grandson and just ask the boy to come in as a walk on. This would have removed the doubt of favoritism and allowed Mick to keep what is left of his (perceived) reputation and leadership ability.

I think Mick slept through Ethics 101. He also forgot to read the state policy manual. I'm betting that RE told him this was an OK thing to do. Sorry folks, but this is just a further indication of how far we have to go to recover this program. We are years away from stability.
So now it a violation of state policy for a coach to give a scholarship to a relative? No one better mention this to Robin Selvig!!!!!

Two years ago, egrizzers had their fingers crossed that Coach Pflugrad's son Aaronw would transfer from Oregon to be wr for the Griz.
The only coach I can think of in the last 25 years who didn't try to bring in a family member was Joe Glenn, whose son Casey played for the Saints. :roll:

Maybe the kid is just there to hand Grandpa a Kleenex when he needs one. It would be worth $500 not to have to see that again.
Plenty to be concerned with if true, but the original article was kind if odd. It mentioned that he had already signed to be a griz, and that doesn't happen until February. I would also doubt that they would commit money to him at this point with so much recruiting yet to play out. I think someone told him they "might" be able to give him book money if there was some left. Me thinks grandson ran with it and embarassed grandpa.

If grandpa wanted him on the team, he could have taken $500 out of his own pocket and given it to the kid, without the appearance of impropriety or stupidity. He makes what, $150,000 a year? Cheap ignorant bastard. But, this is just symptomatic of his whole tenure. I wonder if he doesn't have a little plaque buildup upstairs.
