Coach Critics--What Are Your Complaints After this Game?

If you have watched NDSU much, I think you will note that the Griz looked rather similar against App State. They were relentless and powerful. I watched NDSU wear KSU down, playing this way. It demoralizes the opponent and keeps you in control of the game. I like quick strike, and up tempo, but if you can establish your team in the power game then add elements of the up tempo then you have a nearly unstoppable formula. It appears the Griz have all the pieces to be a power ball control team. It will be interesting to see if they add in the other as the season goes on. JJ knows how to do it and a lot of the team has experienced it also. We'll see where the coaches take this team. It will be fun to watch it develop!

I don't see that anyone has mentioned the two calls early in the third where it was 2nd and 25 and we called a run for 2 then followed it up with what looked like the same play on 3rd so we could punt. Thought a throw down the field was in order on both plays. Especially with the way we came out flat at the half. I was pleasantly surprised that JJ had over 200 yards passing. I really didn't think he threw very often. The offense doesn't seem to play to his strengths but that might have been the game plan to come out and control the clock. I was excited to see Van play and was not disappointed. What a get for the Griz! The D had some occasional sloppy tackling but I'm sure that will improve with more games. Overall, I thought they played one hell of a game.

About 90% of the time when it's 2nd and VERY long or 3rd and VERY long, coaches know to cut their losses, punt the ball, and let their defense get it back for them. The defense is just BEGGING for a ball to be thrown in that situation, when the odds of picking it up are VERY low, but the odds of something very BAD happening are very high.

And I am stunned that anyone could watch THAT game and think that the offense doesn't play to Johnson's strengths. The last thing I want is Johnson carrying the ball 8-12 times a game on keepers. I'd much rather have him vertical for the playoffs than proving his manhood in an offense that "plays to his strengths". His biggest strength (as was made obvious Saturday) is his ACCURACY, followed by his coolness under pressure and his leadership ability. THOSE strengths were on highly visible display all afternoon....thus the end result.

I don’t know that I expressed my thoughts exactly. I thought they played to his strengths, he just didn’t look the same under center……. They had him rolling out and throwing which I believe his strengths are. He’s a dual threat but after one game, it doesn’t look like they need him to make the running plays he had to make 2 years ago. It’s a new offense so maybe it was just me not being comfortable seeing him under center. I thought he played a great game and looked natural and confident out there. And you're right, the last thing any of us want is to see JJ get hurt. He had a couple of throws that made my jaw drop. It's hard to be critical of any phase of the game when you come out and beat a quality opponent. It was obvious we came out with a game plan to control the clock and limit ASU’s quick tempo offense. ASU got the ball to begin the game and had the ball for something like 3 minutes. Seems like we held the ball for the next 7-10 minutes of the first quarter. Looking at the box score, I really didn’t remember us throwing the ball 23 times. I am very happy about that. The power game with Van, a huge OL and a couple of blocking backs……. Add to that Henderson and Jones…… This is going to be an offense that is hard to stop.

The play calling on the series I mentioned is hard to argue. I’m not trying to be critical. All I was saying is I’d like to have seen them more aggressive in that situation. We came out flat in the 3rd. 3 and out. Then, if memory serves me correctly, they had a decent drive but we held. We got the ball and had a pretty good drive of our own when we were penalized and had a second and 25 around mid field. We ran a play to the left for about 2 yards. I assume that the call was made to try and catch them looking for a pass and we’d try pick up enough yardage to get reasonable 3rd down yardage. At that point, I would have liked to see them take a shot at the end zone. If it’s picked, it would be deep in their territory or even a touch back. However, it worked out that we punted and held again. To have a game plan and stick to it even in that situation takes discipline with the play calling throughout the game. It was a conservative disciplined game plan executed perfectly. I can only remember 1 play that went down field and got us all real fired up.

Overall, I thought the play calling was great. Watching the game, I didn’t realize we threw the ball 23 times. I thought it was much less than that. So there was more balance to our attack than I thought. I really liked the call for the screen going into the north end zone in the 4th. It came up a little short. After pounding the ball up the middle for so long it really makes this team tough to defend. If there is only 1 play in the whole game I am really picky about, I will take that every day of the week. If the kicking game comes along, I think we're going to go a long way. Way to go Griz!

Agreed on most of that. And you're correct...running on an obvious passing down is an attempt to pick up 10-12 yards the "cheap" way and getting it into a manageable 3rd down yardage...didn't work, so then you cut your losses and depend on your (very impressive) defense.

I, too, would have liked to have seen them stretch the field a few more times, especially given the success with the one attempt....but, after a 30-6 beatdown (that could have been MUCH worse), it's difficult to sit and bitch about the play calling.

Too many dumb penalties need to work on that. I did like it when Josh Dennard was flagged for being the neutral zone (he was actually up on the receiver in press coverage). Didn't see enough of that last year.

Totally agree with your assessment of too many stupid penalties. One killed a drive at mid-field, another gave App. State another play inside of our 5-yard line. I would bench any player receiving a personal foul for one quarter, to send a message. Montana has always had way too many personal foul penalties through the years IMO.

Outside of this criticism, I think the coaches and players did an outstanding job.

No complaints ... put a string of consistent wins together ... the season has just began. Then, amongst others, there are Eastern Washington and Montana State on the schedule.

You've obviously never played the game. 8-)

Oh i got one... What the hell is he doing having #37 running down on kickoffs. Most violent play in football and they got the star defensive player out there doing it. There you go. But other than that good all around game.

I hope we can come out in the beginning of the 3rd quarter and be a bit more productive on offense. Getting at least a couple of 1st downs and moving the ball to start the half seems crucial to either grab or maintain momentum. MD I think addressed it at the coaches show.

Seriously. Gotta give those halftime tailgaters time to get back to their seats.

Do we need to hope fans to stay in or stay out of their seats after 1/2 time while on the road? This seems to be very important, apparently more so than 1/2 time adjustments which were again lacking

:? :? :?

Really? No adjustments? They scored 3 points in the first half, and 3 in the second. Why would you want to make adjustments to THAT?

I agree with this one 100%. It may that #37 wants to cover kicks to show NFL scouts he is ready, willing and able to play special teams.

it used to drive me nuts when Hauck would put Chase on the punt cover team. I think i recall Chase getting some goofy penalty there. And Colt seemed to be on every ST, which worked out for him i guess.

The biggest coaching mistake of the day was made by Appy when they left their QB in after he smashed his face in the carpet. He looked lost when he got up and also (i think) hurt something on his left side - hand, shoulder... something. He dropped the next two snaps before they pulled him. When he returned later he seemed more tenative and ineffective. Not that it would have changed the outcome of the game, but he sloshed his brain around in his skull pretty good and the backup QB had moved the ball some while he was in.

No complaints at all. But having a good QB running the O does make to coaches look a lot better. One more point, it sure was nice watching a game and not be in total agony wishing for some sort of consistency. Last year was painful, thank you offense for playing well. :thumb:

This thread is silly since one game does not make a season and any loss will produce an opposite, but equally silly thread. Last year there were many critical coaching errors that were obvious and costly. However, the coaches are good hard working people that recognized the need for improvement and worked hard to do so. I'm hopeful the rest of the season will bear that out.

Just very proud of Ty Gregorak.. The guy works is tail off and deserves to see his efforts pay off.

I'll remember this post after the North Dakota game .. just in case they raw dog Tully and Hermanson again.. then we'll see if we're praising Gregorak.
