The ESGGCC chant was fine when it was a random chant started my the student section, sort of how the Montana Grizzlies chant used to be started by the fans and not the cheerleaders. But now that has become a genuine part of the MSU school song, I would be disappointed if I were an alum. If you're over the age of 30, then IMHO, you should believe your school song to be sacred. But now that the fans, and no it's not just the students, it's much of the stadium, do it during the school song, that's something I wouldn't like if I was an alum of MSU, and I was on the field Saturday and I know for a FACT Waded was bothered by it, and she asked multiple people if she thought it was being picked up by Root microphones. Like I said, I've been going to Cat-Griz games for a long ass time in Bobcat Stadium, and none of that has ever bothered me. I've always said that I don't understand the chant during a game against Portland State in September, and I don't understand the people from Great Falls or wherever that burn a Grizzly bear in effigy EVERY game, but for the Cat-Griz game, none of that bothers me, and I've always had nothing but fun in Bozeman, and have never experienced the horrors other Griz fans say. But, I will say, the fact that chant is now an official part of the school song, I think that's concerning, and I know MSU people are concerned about too.
I'm sure many Cat fans ARE concerned about it. Of course the president of our university doesn't love it. Most Cat fans think the bear burning thing and Griz chants throughout the season are stupid. What do you do about it? Are they going to kick everyone out? I just don't understand worrying so much about little sayings and songs when there are way worse things happening that should never be tolerated anywhere.

We had a player literally get shit thrown at him last year. I don't think that reflects on the griz fan base as my experience is always great. But in my mind, instances like that are far more concerning than fans yelling FTC or ESG.

But yes, I have no doubt that as much as I and a lot of others enjoyed the celebration Saturday, there were probably plenty who hated it. And Cat Fans should remember this because it's only a matter of time before the Griz beat us again and they're players and fans won't forget these last four years.

Round and round we go....

ILTC, I'm not going around with Cat fans at all, and FTR, none of that stuff matters, the Cats kicked the s--t out of the Griz and would have even if the chant didn't occur. I'm not even talking specifically about the chant itself. I'm talking about what it's become. I'm talking about MSU's school song. That's it. The rest of it, all the rest of you guys can fight about.

Also, the poop throwing thing, the Cat parent who said on FB also claimed she had physical evidence of it. MPD asked her for it, and they never got it. What are they or the university supposed to do about it at that point?

Nothing at all honestly. That wasn't my point. All I was saying is there is much bigger fish to fry in this game in my opinion. And fans singing Mony Mony after the game and yelling ESG, while not totally awesome, is really nothing in my opinion.

As for the fans rushing the field, chanting ESG after beating the Griz. I can see why that bothers Griz fans. But it seems harmless enough so I don't see what the big deal is. However, some of the "tough guy" students I saw talking to Griz players as they were walking off the field was unacceptable. Frankly if I was one of those players I might have done something about that. And like all things in life, as long as there are Cat fans who know how much Mony Mony and rushing the field after wins bother Griz fans, it won't stop.

I get what you're saying. I was on the wrong side of that for 16 years. Saw and heard lots of stuff. Usually hated it. I just think people worry way too much about the little stuff. I read way worse stuff and hear way more trash talking on these boards than I usually do in the game.

I don't think it generally bothers Griz fans. By all means, party like its 1984. If there is one positive thing Griz fans can take away from Saturday, its that after 4 straight, the Cat's still can't act like they've been there before. IMO, it cheapens what was otherwise a really dominant win by the football team, but you guys do you.

Well said. The choice to play that song that entices the chant is an administrative one, and they know damn well what they were doing. It speaks volumes to win with class, act like you've been there before. There are idiots on both sides for sure, and I know bad stuff happens in WA-girz, but usually in wa-griz it's isolated to a few pockets of idiocy. This was the entire stadium chanting this. Whether they realize it or not its an ugly reflection of their fan base and it's taking away from a good football team that clearly deserved to win on Saturday.

The day they stop storming the field after a win against us and doing that classless chant, will be the day they stop being our little brother. Unfortunately for them, I don't see them stopping that anytime soon. They might not agree with it but It's just the honest truth.

Great point. You want to stick it to the Griz? Act like you just beat Eastern Oregon. You want to act like lil bro, act like you won a home semifinal game.

And while that is a reasonable take, I think you're giving WAY too much credit to how much the fanbase cares what the other side says. Maybe it's just me but I couldn't possibly care that griz fans call the Cats little brother. When they chant FTC I think it's fun. If I was the kids I'd storm the field every time, but I'm not so I don't. But no one on the field at the end of the game seemed to be having a bad time.

Like another poster said, "you do you". Think these guys will keep doing their thing regardless of what we talk about on message boards.

You do you is totally fine. I, personally, think its despicable for grown men to tell 18-22 year old football players, some whom are fellow Montanans, to eat shit, but that's just me. I do however think it reflects poorly on the university when they CHOOSE play that song at the end of the game, and they KNOW very well what will happen when they do. fans will do whatever they want, and there is no way to control that. But playing that song is a CHOICE by the university to entice the crowd to behave like that. just saying it reflects poorly. and we don't storm the field when we beat the cats because, well, it's just not as big of a deal to us.

It’s not the chanting that bothers me, it’s the haunch lifting and ripping of filthy wet phatties in kids’ faces, followed the the whole section cheering. My buddy confirms that this indeed happened.

Laugh all you want, but my buddy is a player’s mom, and he has physical evidence of the phatty that he plans to share with the authorities.

Every fanbase has undesirables. The last time the Griz were at the FargoDome, I watched a fellow Bison fan skin a live bald eagle, and then throw the blood at a 9 year old Griz fan while screaming "The Bison will eviscerate the Griz." This was captured on the tailgate lot security cameras, but the evidence was "lost" when it turned out the perpetrator was a well-connected Lutheran minister.

Then during the game, a drunken Griz fan dared to look me in the eyes and say "Hello kind sir". I was surprised by his ETOH fueled bravado, but still kept my composure in the face of such undue harassment. I swiftly Three Stooged him right in his eyes, grabbed his poutine, and rubbed my armpit juice in his wife's face. They were promptly and justly kicked out by Fargo PD. The police body cam footage is used as training for how to deal with unruly Grizkitty fans.

Well, after this much time has passed, I cannot guarantee that I won’t storm the field when we beat the Cats. ;)

And that's fine too. The game isn't a big deal for Griz fans. Certainly fair and you won't hear me telling you how you should feel about the game. It's just another game for you guys like playing Idaho state or southern Utah. I just don't feel like that is the case for most of our fans.

never said the game isn't a big deal, of course it is. I love this game more than any other. It just seems like one side seems to compose itself better after a win is all. and if my university was knowingly playing a song that caused the fans to chant "eat shit bobcats", i wouldn't be very happy about it, i would be embarrassed by it. clearly, there is no shame in how low the cats go when it comes to the griz.

Maybe that lack of passion in your fanbase (especially the students) is partially why not only your football team is on on 4 year losing streak but your whole university is on about a 10 year losing streak.

I hope MSU's student section never quits storming the field after a Cat/fizz win.
To the victor go the spoils.

To be clear, I’m not disagreeing with what you’re saying. And if that was the case and you were embarrassed what would you do about it?

And where would you draw the line? Were you embarrassed when your players wrote FTC on their arms? Or all chanted it after beating us? I didn’t have a problem with it but curious.

I think there is plenty of “classless” stuff all the time if that’s the word everyone insists on using. Like when Bobby said he wished the game was 5 quarters. Or that he wouldn’t even get gas in Bozeman. Things that to me are funny, but I’m sure many find classless.

Whenever the Griz win again we’ll hear the same whining from cat fans about griz players and fans. It’s never going away but I do always appreciate the discussion after every single brawl!

You do you is totally fine. I, personally, think its despicable for grown men to tell 18-22 year old football players, some whom are fellow Montanans, to eat shit, but that's just me. I personally am only drawing the line at the ESG chant becoming an accepted part of the Montana State Fight Song (Stand up and Cheer). I looked it up, that song is over 70 years old now. It should be a revered tradition. I feel that way about both of the fight songs my university and my high school, and it would never be OK with me if one of them became what they've done to the Bobcat Fight Song.

I don't it generally bothers Griz fans. By all means, party like its 1984. If there is one positive thing Griz fans can take away from Saturday, its that after 4 straight, the Cat's still can't act like they've been there before. IMO, it cheapens what was otherwise a really dominant win by the football team.

Great point. You want to stick it to the Griz? Act like you just beat Eastern Oregon. You want to act like lil bro, act like you won a home semifinal game.
It's not 1984 yet, MSU is only in year 4 of the plan. 1984 will take more time! Goals for year 4 you ask? Many, but the obvious ones were to be seeded in the tournament, and to beat the griz - in that order. CDA, everyone has a plan, Choate does, and so does Bobby. I'd say for year 2 Bobby is ahead of schedule. Way ahead. Give him a couple more years to build up those lines and look out. Choate inherited a much less talented team than Bobby did, and has struggled to get a qb we can all love (to hate). You can hate Choate, but you have to respect what he's done in 4 years.

Personally, I dont want to be policing other teams fans behavior. I like all the s*** talking, it makes winning more enjoyable. This year the egiz cat fans have been pretty respectful and classy winners I think. For the most part. I say let them police their own when it comes to s*** talking and chants. I think their chant is stupid and embarrassing for them, especially when done when we arent playing them but I am fine if they want to embarrass themselves and I sure dont feel line I should try to change them.

My boss is not a Griz Fan but watched it. He asked me what it was they were chanting at the end of the game as he couldn't quite make it out on the TV. I told him and he thought that was really stupid. Said it maid MSU look like a bunch of uneducated redneck hillbillies. If that is the image they want to project of their school, more power to them
