This year the egiz cat fans have been pretty respectful and classy winners I think. For the most part. I say let them police their own when it comes to s*** talking and chants. I think their chant is stupid and embarrassing for them, especially when done when we arent playing them but I am fine if they want to embarrass themselves and I sure dont feel line I should try to change them.
My boss is not a Griz Fan but watched it. He asked me what it was they were chanting at the end of the game as he couldn't quite make it out on the TV. I told him and he thought that was really stupid. Said it maid MSU look like a bunch of uneducated redneck hillbillies. If that is the image they want to project of their school, more power to them

That’s been going on for 20+years, so you have to expect it, right?

It's gotten way worse. I've been this more this more than 20 years, junior.

I told my son going in "When you see a Griz fan, walk up and say " Good luck today, I hope it is a great game" and shake their hand. He was super exited to be at the game, and made sure to say it to every Griz fan that he saw... EVERY ONE of the Griz fans he saw said "Thank you, we hope so as well" His first Cat/Griz game was made even better because of the sportsmanship of both fan bases. The outcome may not have been what you all wanted, but it was a great atmosphere for all there, because of the Griz and Cats fan bases... Thanks to all Griz that made it down
Me, my wife and my son and his wife sat in front of cat fans that really should read and appreciate your comments.
Our experience was opposite. After walking in and sitting down, a 12 -13 year old says, “fuc- the Griz”. My son, somewhat shocked replies, “what did you say? “ The man seated next to the younger boy, I assume him to be his father, says, “fuc- the Griz”!
I could go on about how we were treated throughout the game, but it is not what I would describe as good sportsmanship.
I’ve been to many Cat/Griz games at both stadiums. This is the first time I would say I really did not feel safe attending. We were pushed, hit on the back, screamed at, told to f*** off and leave if we don’t like it etc. (and that was after the first fumble of the game)
My wife told me she would never join me again at a game in Bozeman.
I’m sure there are stories of Bobcat fans being treated similarly in Missoula.
Shame on anyone that acts like this.
I might add that sitting in front of us was a former Cat lineman, forgive me for not remembering his name, but he did say he was originally from Iowa and played two years for SF out of College. He was a perfect example of a great sportsmanship and even told us he would sit next to us if the people behind us caused any more trouble.
Thank you again SacCat for bringing your son up correctly.
George Ferguson said:The ESGGCC chant was fine when it was a random chant started my the student section, sort of how the Montana Grizzlies chant used to be started by the fans and not the cheerleaders. But now that has become a genuine part of the MSU school song, I would be disappointed if I were an alum. If you're over the age of 30, then IMHO, you should believe your school song to be sacred. But now that the fans, and no it's not just the students, it's much of the stadium, do it during the school song, that's something I wouldn't like if I was an alum of MSU, and I was on the field Saturday and I know for a FACT Waded was bothered by it, and she asked multiple people if she thought it was being picked up by Root microphones. Like I said, I've been going to Cat-Griz games for a long ass time in Bobcat Stadium, and none of that has ever bothered me. I've always said that I don't understand the chant during a game against Portland State in September, and I don't understand the people from Great Falls or wherever that burn a Grizzly bear in effigy EVERY game, but for the Cat-Griz game, none of that bothers me, and I've always had nothing but fun in Bozeman, and have never experienced the horrors other Griz fans say. But, I will say, the fact that chant is now an official part of the school song, I think that's concerning, and I know MSU people are concerned about too.
Bear Spray said:It's not 1984 yet, MSU is only in year 4 of the plan. 1984 will take more time! Goals for year 4 you ask? Many, but the obvious ones were to be seeded in the tournament, and to beat the griz - in that order. CDA, everyone has a plan, Choate does, and so does Bobby. I'd say for year 2 Bobby is ahead of schedule. Way ahead. Give him a couple more years to build up those lines and look out. Choate inherited a much less talented team than Bobby did, and has struggled to get a qb we can all love (to hate). You can hate Choate, but you have to respect what he's done in 4 years.CDAGRIZ said:Jaredkuehn said:ilovethecats said:Nothing at all honestly. That wasn't my point. All I was saying is there is much bigger fish to fry in this game in my opinion. And fans singing Mony Mony after the game and yelling ESG, while not totally awesome, is really nothing in my opinion.
As for the fans rushing the field, chanting ESG after beating the Griz. I can see why that bothers Griz fans. But it seems harmless enough so I don't see what the big deal is. However, some of the "tough guy" students I saw talking to Griz players as they were walking off the field was unacceptable. Frankly if I was one of those players I might have done something about that. And like all things in life, as long as there are Cat fans who know how much Mony Mony and rushing the field after wins bother Griz fans, it won't stop.
I get what you're saying. I was on the wrong side of that for 16 years. Saw and heard lots of stuff. Usually hated it. I just think people worry way too much about the little stuff. I read way worse stuff and hear way more trash talking on these boards than I usually do in the game.
I don't it generally bothers Griz fans. By all means, party like its 1984. If there is one positive thing Griz fans can take away from Saturday, its that after 4 straight, the Cat's still can't act like they've been there before. IMO, it cheapens what was otherwise a really dominant win by the football team.
Great point. You want to stick it to the Griz? Act like you just beat Eastern Oregon. You want to act like lil bro, act like you won a home semifinal game.
George Ferguson said:I think this statement by Cats2506 on BN is why Cat fans still catch so much "little bro" crap from Griz fans to this day, even though the Cats are kicking our ass right now.
OF ALL THE GREAT THINGS the Cats have done, and they have done great things, win national titles, Big Sky titles, amazing playoff wins, tons of success, this guy says his proudest moment as a Bobcat fan is the fact that Root showed, and you could hear the ESG Chant during the postgame celebration Saturday. Like really, not Travis Lulay, or Cody Kirk or Jan Stenerud, really, not 2002 or 1984 or the great comeback in the playoffs a few years ago? Really, that's the best moment in Bobcat history? I know he's just one anonymous fan on a message board, but I gotta tell ya, that sums up the "lil brother" syndrome to a T.
Other than that, this thread had a lot of good comments from Cat fans on the subject

This is complete BS. The whole crowd was singing the national anthem on Saturday, and our students sing along EVERY game.No pride in the fight song? Come on now.Mousegriz said:I like Griz fans singing the pre game national anthem (because the know it), singing and standing for the fight song (because they know it) and singing and playing the Montana state song at all games (because it's a cool state song and feels good to stand and sing M O N T A N A with pride).
To my knowledge Cat fans don't sing the pregame national anthem, most seem to not know or have much pride in their fight song and I've never heard the state song played in Bozeman by the MSU band at an MSU game.
But by god....they practice (all year) their ESG GCG chants. And are damn proud you could hear it on the Root broadcast the other day.

I quite honestly think the "who is classier" or "who is more classless" debate every year is not productive. It's a rivalry. Emotions run high for everyone. There's always copious amounts of alcohol involved. And no matter what - there are always bad fans on either side.
I grew up a cat fan, went to MSU, and got one of my degrees from MSU, so I have mostly seen the bad from your side. That said, it's not lost on me that it exists on both. I know for a fact the p**p throwing incident happened last year. I also had some family friends who were adults get peed on by griz fans in Wa-griz. When I was 18 or 19 I was at the game in Missoula and my boyfriend at the time was playing for the cats. I stood up to cheer as he walked on the field and had a grown man put his hands on my shoulders and shove me back down into my seat, telling me I needed to sit the f*ck down. The game hadn't even started yet! And I had no intentions of blocking his view the whole game. I was just there to support my team, just like he was.
Again, I know this happens on both sides, which is why I think the "class" argument is pointless. After those experiences, I still go watch the game in Missoula and am friendly to griz fans every day of the year. The bad few doesn't define the whole fan base.
As for cat fans yelling ESG, GCG last Saturday. . .
I was born in the 90s and didn't see the cats beat the griz until I was 10 years old. I remember losing every year and it sucked. Growing up in those years made it really hard not to hate the griz. Many, if not most, other cat fans, including some of those Montana kids in the student section this past game, lived for at least some part of the streak. And if they didn't grow up in it, they know about it. It's still thrown in our faces even after four wins in a row! Can't tell you how many times I've heard "talk to me after you win 12 more" or something to that effect. It's usually all in good fun so I'm not complaining about it, just pointing it out. Those 16 years put a very bad taste in a lot of bobcats' mouths and it doesn't really go away. I still hold my breath until the 4th quarter expires no matter what the score is.
We also grew up with Bobby round 1 who repeatedly said we don't even deserve to have Montana in our name, he wished there were 5 quarters so he could kick our a** some more, refused to spend a penny in Bozeman, and the list goes on. I think bringing him back to UM resurrected a LOT of animosity from cat fans.
This was the first time EVER we have beat the griz by such a large margin. Can't lie, it felt pretty dang good. It felt that much sweeter to do it with Bobby as HC. Mony mony was banned by the admin at bobcat stadium for many years until this year, and I really think having Bobby back, who has disrespected not only our team and coaches, but our university and our town for so many years, had a little something to do with its comeback. Is it classy of us? No, of course not! But to be fair, not a whole lot is in this rivalry. That's part of what makes it what it is.
For every bad fan on either side, there's 100 good ones. Can we focus on the good ones and not give the bad ones the attention they're obviously seeking? Unless, of course, it rises to a level that requires a real conversation. But for now, and correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think we're there yet.
Hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving, and best of luck to you in the playoffs!

The only thing that I think is "classless" is the fact that MSU, as in Montana State University, the institution itself, entices and encourages their fans to do that chant by playing that song. True, you can't control the assholes on either side, and neither of us should be held responsible for the actions of other fans who clearly take it too far. I'm well aware there are a lot of terrible Griz fans that are worthy of criticism, but I can proudly say my University doesn't intentionally condone and encourage profanity being shouted at a bunch of kids playing a game. Its my opinion that when the University ITSELF chooses to play that song, knowing damn well their students and fans will chant that as loud as possible to 18-22 year olds, including a lot of fellow montanans, is indeed, classless.
