change, change, change

a year ago, i think there were several griz hoops fans scratching their heads at the lackluster performance and evident dissension inside our men's program, and wondering if maybe we didn't let the wrong guy get away when huse went to the bobcats. but now, thanks to the departures of several players and one assistant coach, followed by a stellar recruiting class and the hiring of bill evans, we hard-core few here are pretty much re-energized and eagerly anticipating the coming season.

meantime, i think the doubts are setting in at bozeman, where they've seen the resignations of two assistants, including the golden savior boy danny sprinkle, and the loss of several players plus coveted recruit tyler miller, all to the accompaniment of a recent thread on b.n., "is huse the problem?" i think it's way too early for panic in bozeman, but you get the feeling the changes that have taken place there the past year, especially the loss of sprinkle and miller, are not as positive as the sort we've seen in missoula.

but what jumped out at me was this quote from danny sprinkle, via an e-mail to our resident guru, mslacat:

"The last problem MSU has is Coach Huse. In my opinion he is the bright spot of that athletic dept right now."

wow! not high praise for the rest of the coaches over there. is there more to this story than meets the eye?

Well, I agree with you about the optimism that we have towards the Grizzly program right now. It appears that everything is pointing to a season that we have been waiting for since coach Tinkle was hired.
On the other hand, I think coach Huse is a very talented coach. It would be unfair to judge him based on recent events until he has had a chance to put his new staff in place and make a go at the upcoming year. It would be my bet that he will get the most out of his team and be very competitive just like he has done the previous two years.
Coach K did a great job bringing into his staff two head coach caliber assistants that worked very well with him. I would argue that his staff was the best staff top to bottom that we've ever had at UM. There has been a lot of discussion about who the right hire would have been. I think that both were equally qualified but that coach Tinkle was more deserving of his current position. I'm sure this discussion will go on for years.

Not to say it's the same as last year but my feelings going into this season are very close to last season. We had a good recruiting class heading in with selvig and Qvale, then added stockton and Ward. We were coming off a very disappointing season and thought the next had to be better and certainly would be. I'll wait until I see results on the court until i'm convinced this program is heading where it should be.

I think you are over reading into Sprinkle's comments. Sprinkle was specifically commenting on the rumors that "Huse drove off the assistants" and Danny was very irritated by even the suggestion. He holds Huse in very high regards and was trying to emphasis that.

Huse /Tinkle Tiinkle /Huse, all I will say of the two we got the one we wanted and will Guarantee you Huse will be in Bozeman at least through the 2010-11 season, Tinkle can not say that with the same amount of certainty.

MSU brass really likes Huse; one of the assistants that left was pretty much out the door anyway because of some off the field stuff... I also think it speaks volumes that Scott Carson would come back to work for Huse after getting fired by Huse in 2007.

I have 1000 griz bucks saying Tinkle will be here at least until 2010-11. And I don't know how you can say you got the one you wanted because Tinkle was never an option for Miss U. As we all know HC is about being an ambassador for the school in which you work. Tinkle is the perfect ambassador for UM. And it doesn't hurt that he has potential Lady Griz in the family.

Believe it or not I actually think Tinkle is a perfect fit to continue on the Griz great basketball tradition. My comments were more pointed towards, Tinkle's contract is up for review /renew, and it will not be renewed until after this coming season. Huse is set until 2010-11. I would agree with you though that if O'Day and the boosters wants him in Missoula Tinkle will be here for quite a while.

glad to see that egriz bleeds a little blue and gold now and then. i say, what's good for one conference team is good for the entire conference.

bit i'm sticking to my original post, which is that as much as i wish huse well, this much turnover two years into a regime does not bode well no matter how you spin it, especially the losses of sprinkle and a touted recruit in miller. if huse had known two years ago that he'd have sprinkle for two years only, do you think he'd have hired him? maybe, but this is obviously not what huse or bobcat fans had in mind.

and sprinkle's parting comment about huse still mystifies. if somebody is the "bright spot" of an athletic department, doesn't that imply the other spots are less bright? what does that say about ash or binford? ( i think binford is a real star in the making.) can't you praise someone without impugning others?

geraldo here, over and out.

thank you for the comments about tinkle, mslacat. i believe there are times in life when patience is required and i believe that's the case for both huse and tinkle. when it comes to tinkle, i have a large reserve of patience. i believe both coaches are on successful if bumpy paths to much better things.
