Challenge: To make room who should Go!

This will either go over like a lead balloon or some may actually enjoy it.

OK Armchair Griz basketball coaches, time to put your money where your mouth is.
This is the situation Griz have only one open scholarship, and only one senior on the Squad. This leaves two scholarships open for next year, But Kysco. Have signed three players for next year already. These three high school student are Guaranteed by NCAA rule their scholarship. That means at least one of the existing rostered (or redshirt Hasquet) player will have to be "let go". Furthermore if Chavez becomes eligible a player may have to be "let go" if Kysco chooses to give him back his scholarship. And Finally from what I am hearing Kysco is still involved with a few JC and high school big men prospects, and for every player he signs that means another player roster player will not be back.

You are the coach: If you have the hustpa to, Given this situation what would you do. Be the coach, and make the tough decision. and name names and reasons. At a bare minimum you could say I am not recruiting any more players, If Chavez comes he must walk-on to play, and this is the player I would cut and here is why. The whole other route would be to cut list players to be cut and replace them with these high school or JC type players. Now remember though you cannot always go cutting the weakest players if you do not have players to play that position.

I will give this a shot, a little later.

This does sound kind of fun. :D

First off, McKay and Seyfert stay. As much as Krysko loves to pound it inside, where are his post recruits? Four out of Five of our big players will be gone in two years, yet Krysko hasn't recruited anybody who can bang inside. All three of the recruits can shoot the lights out, hopefully our offense changes to reflect that next year.

Criswell, Strait, Martin and Dlouhy all have to stay. Without these guys we wouldn't be able to score more than 40 points/game.

Chavez is not an issue. He is not going to be suiting up for the Griz anytime in the near future.

So with those guys I've got two 5's, one 4, 3, 2 and 1. Easley will be back for the other 4. The three new recruits play anywhere from the 1-3. So that doubles me up at every position, and leaves me three scholarships.

I go with Hasquet for the first spot. Montana kid with a huge upside. I want to see how he plays in a real live situation before I take his scholarship away.

I hate to say this, but that leaves me to hope that either Matthews or Farr transfers after this year. If one does transfer it makes my job easy. If I had to pick, I would go with Lynch and Farr, but ask Lynch if he would stay without a scholarship. If he would be ok with it, I'd go get a big guy for the future.

Does Lynch even have a scholarship??? Was he given one at the end of the year by Kennedy??

Chavez has no chance to come back so I bet that Lynch will have his scholarship taken.

Brian is a
Montana kid (low tuiton),

Will be a Junior in school (not a likely transfer)

All of these reasons make it look like he would be the most likely to "walk on" again.

Lynch was given a scholarship right after Kysco was hired.
Chavez does not have a scholarship right now.
I hear Kysco is looking at Big guys IF he signs another playet

i aggree with you Sweetwyne, but I will have to add this:
Whoever takes the court for the griz next year is going to be part of a young basketball team, therefore i would add these changes
1) Id recruit a High School Center
2) Id Recruit a High School wing
3) Id tell Lynch and Farr that if they have any hope of playing basketball again to transfer.

I agree that by doing this that i would be, as coach, headging my bets on the future, but the only reason why i would be doing this would be that farr is not buying into my program *i admit i have no idea where i got that from but that is happeneing*. As a upperclassmen, Farr's attitude would be infections on the youngsters

bells- Coach K says just the opposite regarding Farr "buying into the program." In answer to MslaCats question, I'd say Lynch. Farr and Matthews will progress. I look for Farr to have some huge games before this year is done. He already may be the best passer and penetration guy on the team. He also plays good defense. Mathews is our only real option at point guard to back up Martin. He also is a good defender. PG really isn't a good postion for Lynch. If another spot is necessary for big man purposes, it may end up being Easley. MslaCat- it's your turn.

That's a tough question... From what I've seen so far this year the person I'd let go would be Lynch. Lynch seems like a nice kid & has had a few good games this year, but I really don't think he should be playing point guard. He'd make a more effective wing, but we are loaded with wings this year, and next year, and probably for quite a while. Lynch of course would be welcome to stay as a walkon though.

If one more person needed to be let go, I'd probably go with Easley. Easley has also had some good games this year, and is a good shot blocker, but he really isn't a very effective post player & gets banged around down low by bigger post players. He also isn't a very good rebounder from what I've seen. He still seems to be more of a 3 than a 4 in terms of how he plays. We are loaded at 3 right now, and have some quality big guys with Hasquet, Strait, and Sharp coming in, so there really isn't going to be much room for Easley I don't think unless he really works on his inside play.

Now, since some people have talked about letting Farr or Matthews transfer, here's why I'd keep both of them. Farr brings good energy to the floor and is one of our better defenders. Also, he is one of our best passers & the only other guy besides criswell to have a positive assist/turnover ratio. Farr also is great at creating scoring opportunities for his teammates by driving to the basket & dumping off a nice pass to our post guys. A lot of what he does doesn't show up in the stat sheet, but is definitely helpful to the team.

Matthews I think should be playing more, and backing up Martin at the point. In the games he played more than 15 minutes, he averaged 6.67pts, 4.33reb, & 3.5assists. He seems to be a player that takes a few minutes to get going, but when he does get going he really contributes. He also is a great defender. For quite a while he was leading the Griz in steals, until his playing time was drastically cut. He's a good passer, rebounder, and is leading the griz in FG% (56.3%), and 2nd on the team in 3pt% (40%). I really don't understand why his playing time has gone down so drastically...

If you had asked this question at the beginning of the season I probably would've gone with Lynch & McKay..but McKay, now that he is healthy I think will contribute quite a lot & has looked good in the games he's played so far this year.

I'm pretty sure that covers all positions, and makes it so the incoming freshman could redshirt if needed.

Sweetywnye i am pretty sure Lynch's name wouldn't be in the discussion if he wasn't on scholarship so tune in first of all. Hells Bells...I am assuming you are a coach yourself w/ your intelligent post. Good idea, go recruit three new guys to come in and dominate the Big Sky as freshmen. A wing and a center. I'm pretty sure Criswell, Dlouhy and Syfert will hold there jobs but you should e-mail Krysco and see if he needs a coaching advisor(you'd be great). As for the scholarship, you look at Easley and Matthews and Lynch keeps his. One of the best shooters on the team and has vewry good basketball I.Q which cant be overlooked.

umdeez- Lynch is "one of the best shooters on the team"? His shooting percentage going into this game was .286, by far the lowest on the team. Matthews has the highest (.563). I love Brian's hustle but I really think he is out of position at the point and gives a lot away to Matthews in terms of passing, rebounding and defense. Virgil is especially adept at defending quick point guards. By the way, I noticed that your post was made while the game was in session. Either you weren't at the game or you posted from a laptop. Presumably not the courtside laptop that was stolen before the game and resulted in no scoreboard stats tonight. Actually, I am getting a little uncomfortable with this thread as I really don't like discussions that could lead to any player being slammed. I think the players on this year's team are a fine group and I am proud with how well they play as a team.

I agree Lynch's shooting percentage is low but that's because he doesn't get up a lot of shots and your % rises w/ shot attempts. He is a very good shooter, If you watched him at all in High School he was the best shooter in class AA his whole career. I know the Big Sky isn't MT high school B-ball but he is a very good shooter and his % will come up. As for the time of my post, yes I was at home listening on the radio. I seemed to have come down w/ a case of the Whooping Cough which is highly contagious and I didn't want to put any of Griz Nation Faithful at risk.

You don't build a program by giving people scholorships and then taking them away but suggesting they stay as a walk on. Taking scholarships away does nothing for the player except shatter their confidence, and is looked on as a negative in the eyes of future prospects considering the program. If a player ends up being a bust it is due to the coach not doing his job scouting and knowing a player before he offers scholarships.

A scholarship player in the Big Sky should be given time to develop. No freshmen coming into the the Big Sky should be looked upon as a immediate star. If so, there is a reason they chose the Big Sky over a better conference. Also, any player playing more then 8 minutes a game should be on scholarship or they are being taken advantage of.

The program has to actively keep recruiting players throughout the year even if you do not have scholarships available. For one, a player may transfer unexpectly. Also, a player may back out of the verbal commitment unexpectly. This is why you can drop a call on a moments notice and offer a scholarship instead starting the process of looking for a a prospect in the 11th hour. Another reason is to keep working your network for future prospects.

As far as I know, only the scholarships of Wilkins and Kamarr will open up next year. It looks like one more will have to be made available.

We already have Wilkins and Kamar. Add to that Chavez. Plus, the word is that McKay is graduating and will pass up his 5th year. There you go - four scholarships with 3 given so far. And no "cuts" have to be made.
